Just curious on peoples' thoughts on when the next iMac will be released. I am really hoping it will be released in May but I am pretty doubtful, maybe closer the leopard? I know there is no way to know until the day of the release, just looking for other opinions! The wait is driving me nuts! :apple:

hm, I don't see the point really...
Why should they bring out a new imac. They are still up to date, and no new technology has been released. The only thing they could do is update the performance a little bit, as computer parts are cheaper since, or pull out a new design. A new design wouldn't actually be any good if it's still using the same parts inside, would it?
Like already been said in hundreds of posts before: If you are considering getting one, and you really need it, get one now ;)

man, I sound so negative  :D

I have a feeling Apple wants to update the look of all their computers this year.

Based on what? The fact that it's April right now, and they haven't updated the look of any of their computers except the Macbook, and that relatively minorly, in ages?

Right now, outside of small clusters of people on sites like this, Apple's designs are already considered the most elegant in the industry. They have their hands full keeping up with the leap in Intel's productivity that Core allowed, getting Leopard out, and making the iPhone a hit.

Not saying that they might not release new models, or even new models with a new look. But I somehow doubt they're going to do anything this dramatic.

Do you think they will do a small update when the next mobile processor from intel is released? I'm not in need of an imac but would really like to get one, I am just unsure whether I should wait for the next small/big update.

I see a revision at WWDC with Santa Rosa, the iMac being the first to get it ahead of the portables and the Mini, along with possibly a minor speed bump.

I also think we may see a black iMac. But I put that at 50/50 at best.

I personally think the 24" iMac should have a Pro edition.

The 24" iMac Pro.
Silver anodized aluminum like the displays, MBPs, Mini case and Mac Pro case.

Highest processor option, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 7600GT 256 (or whatever the high end option on the video card is) and

available in stores so it doesn't have to be a CTO.

my guess. for what it is worth (probably nothing), is that we will see an update before wwdc.

based on days since update and the fact that apple will probably want to focus wwdc on leopard and iphone, because that is where they want developers to focus. developers don't need any changes to the imac.

i figure they will release products soon, so that they have a balanced quarter. incase iphone sees a cool reception they will have already cushioned themselves with a new imac or mb/mbp.

new product before iphone, new os after = balanced year financially speaking, particularly if they have to distract the public from the fact that they won't have a new ipod until late fall/holiday 2007.

like i said, my guess. probably worth little. :)

What if that change is touch-screen goodness? :)

if it is touch screen...... i will be pleasantly surprised and very confused.

touch screen just begs the question, why not a solid state tablet mbp?

there is little place for touch screen on a desktop.

I think touch-screen iMacs are coming. Not before Penryn, and most likely another 1-2 years easy. I wouldn't expect it now, especially since it will need leopard.

Same here. Like all the others saying it too, why not make a tablet if they made the imacs touch screen.
I am guessing apple will go with the small update before WWDC with the new chips (hopefully black, too!), and the second it happens, my pockets will be emptied. :)

Imagine sitting right in front of a massive 24" touchscreen, or even bigger (as you need to touch it)...

Better arrange an appointment for you optician at the end of the year, because you'll need it.
Apparently big, big glasses improve your overall sex appeal... :D

I hate the idea of a touchscreen imac...

I see lots of reasons why a new iMac may be in the works, but who really knows with Apple and Steve J.

The biggest thing I see is the need to provide some hardware changes that may benefit all the goodness that will come with Leopard, upcoming chips and all the Apple development we keep hearing about:

Maybe a second HD for time machine.
Extra ports to plug in a multi-touch device.
Changing the "guts" of the machine to set up for future updates in Intel's chip line.

I'm one of those persons that desperately needs to replace my G4 iMac lamp. It's really pathetic, but I don't want to do that until I know the iMac that is out will take FULL advantage of all the features that Leopard will offer.

Nothing until after June and the iPhone release. Seems like Apple is putting all its resources into that...

Well I say that, if Apple does not take advantage of Santa Rosa right away, then the next IMac will be here around the Paris Expo in September. I Also I say that if the IPhone is pushed back, even if by a couple of weeks, we will not see Leopard till Macworld 08, in January, with a redesigned IMac around the same time.
The IPod is due for a update, with a small bump last time, Apple will not let that market wait, so that will take more resources away from the redesign of their computer line.

I am not putting down Apple, they just have a lot of things on their plate right now and when they do come back to there computer line they will do it right. Remember the Tom Petty song "The waiting is the hardest part" how true it is.

I agree with that, unfortunately, because I really want one to be out soon. So Macworld is in September, right?? That HAS to be when a new one would be getting introduced, the only problem is the leopard delay. Would they introduce a bunch of new technology before the OS is out? :( I really doubt it

intel and other company's create the technology, apple simply fashion it into their own style, theirfore the technology has to be available to write an OS for it, not the other way around, otherwise your writing a new OS to blueprints which could change and be full of bugs

I think we will see new imacs before WWDC UNLESS they have a new form factor. If that's the case, then an intro at the keynote would be appropriate. If not, then I think we'll see them quietly given Santa Rosa some time in May, and WWDC will be all about the mac pro and the iphone.

I can see the iPhone being big at WWDC but not so much the mac pro, maybe the macbook pro though?

I hope so. I plan to buy a 24" IMac in November or whenever Apple release Leopard.

How about a built-in HD iSight camera?

I'm doubtful on a largely updated mac pro, what the heck would they do to it? It seems like it would be a very small update, not something big .

But as I understand after a new processor is out it takes a while, one or two months before it is implemented in a new computer, unless the Santa Rosa is already at Apple for installation before official release

After June.

Seems that Intel will have nothing new on the processor side until second half 2007, and even then whats comming is not that impressive for a desktop...which might mean Apple will change to desktop processors so they can offer Quad core models as expensive upgrades.

I would like the new model to be released tomorrow, however there is nothing new on the hardware side to upgrade...and iMacs at the moment are looking pretty expensive for what you get (for instance, consider the cost of Apple provided Ram and Disk upgrades).

I hear ya; however, I don't think Leopard is going to require hardware beyond what is on today's iMac. When Apple has updated the OS to the point that older macs couldn't keep up, those macs were generally two generations old. I am waiting for the Santa Rosa update. Not because I think Santa Rosa is so incredible, but because I don't have to have a new mac this second and there will be a SR update in a few months.
