Are the graphics cards mentioned in the configuration options the only ones that can be used with the Mac pro? Are they constructed differently from their PC counterparts or is it just that only these cards offer driver support for mac os?

Thanks in advance.

They are the only ones currently, and officially supported. Most people are expecting an upgrade to the MacPro soon. The recent option for the Quad codes was more of a speed bump than a model revision.

Others have unofficially made different video cards work in the MP. What they did, and how they did it, are documented on the web. I did not commit it to memory.

The current graphics cards that the Mac Pro has are fine. Check these benchmarks.

Where do you think the MP Quad 3.0 w/FX-4500 would have come in at?

Check this (http://www.barefeats.com/octopro2.html) benchmark. It's pretty much the same.
