appleTV hacks gone quiet!?!

havnt noticed much on the apptv hacks front lately, i would love to see a version of the software with dvd capabilities and add it to a mac mini, (eyetv would also be nice) so anyone heard of anything interesting lately?

From what I understand, a group of individuals are testing a hack that will install a menu item that will allow you to download any of the available plug-ins (hacks) that are out there. Apparently you will be able to do the install without opening the box up.

Once this happens, it will be much easier for anyone to install the hacks without voiding the warranty.

:rolleyes: they're talking about doing it from a USB stick, using the built in restore functionality, install the plugin that will then let you install other code. Nothing to do with "hacking OSX" wirelessly.

u still need a bootable OSX environment that can interact with appletv, which, in my opinion, is beyond what average user can do. but again, maybe average appletv users don't need xvid/divx at all, who knows.

Wouldn't any OS that can read/write HFS be sufficient?

You are probably right. altho extra learning curve of a different OS (Linux etc,) might not be easy for some ppl.

If the AppleTV hackers take a clue from the TiVo hackers, they'll make an image that easily installs to a USB drive that will simply ask the user a few questions (like "would you like SSH enabled?", "would you like the PERIAN codecs installed?", etc) and then do all the work behind the scenes via scripts.

We'll see. :)

Any sort of magic abilities will do.

Oh and it should allow for integration with an iPod via the USB port.
eg: I plug in my step-nephew's iPod and we can all watch his movies and listen to his music via :apple:TV without first accessing the host mac.

I believe HDCP is a requirement of HDMI, so one would think so. However, the AppleTV doesn't have the horsepower to decode HD DVD or Blu-ray. It can barely manage 720p24 H.264 Main Profile, to say nothing of the codecs (and frame sizes) used on those sorts of media.
