24" iMac hard drive upgrade

Just swapped my stock 250GB drive (Seagate 7200.9 8MB buffer) out for a 500GB drive (Seagate 7200.10 16MB buffer).

My mac is now faster and has twice as much storage. :)


It was a very easy install! Only special tool needed was a little T-8 torx screwdriver from Sears.

Wicked. Was it the same size as the old hard drive? I shall be making this upgrade the moment my warranty runs out (october). Were you able to simply mirror the old disk onto the new or did you do a fresh install?

Exactly the same size.

Nope, I think you need an external drive to mirror your current drive. I just did a fresh install.

At work we clone Macs we put the image on the network because it is easier for us, at home an external drive would be the easiest option.

You could use an external hard drive enclosure with a sata connector to image onto the new hard drive with it... USB of firewire. Its not so much about software but actually getting the data across.

I would use SuperDuper! I have used it before and it works great. Amazing piece of software.

You will also need a Sata to Firewire/USB external drive, that way you can clone your drive but also have a ton of new space at the same time.

I have used Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html quite successfully before, to have an external bootable disk (USB) that I can use if something goes wrong. Just swap this disk in.

I have used Carbon Copy Cloner before, but I found for Intel Partitions, it would do funny things with the permissions. Both programs will do the job and do them well. More of personally preference.

why not just do a time machine back up to an external usb or firewire drive.
put in the new HDD and boot off your restore dvd but don's re-install osx just accept english (or your preferred language) at first step then when the installer comes up choose disk utility from the task bar menu and format the blank drive then choose restore from time machine backup and go and have a cup of tea.

when you done your machine is identical to how you started (except outlook 2011 likes to rebuild the database for a minute first)
