Utah County Republicans ended their convention on Saturday by debating Satan's influence on illegal immigrants.

The group was unable to take official action because not enough members stuck around long enough to vote, despite the pleadings of party officials. The convention was held at Canyon View Junior High School.

Don Larsen, chairman of legislative District 65 for the Utah County Republican Party, had submitted a resolution warning that Satan's minions want to eliminate national borders and do away with sovereignty.

In a speech at the convention, Larsen told those gathered that illegal immigrants "hate American people" and "are determined to destroy this country, and there is nothing they won't do."

Illegal aliens are in control of the media, and working in tandem with Democrats, are trying to "destroy Christian America" and replace it with "a godless new world order -- and that is not extremism, that is fact," Larsen said.

At the end of his speech, Larsen began to cry, saying illegal immigrants were trying to bring about the destruction of the U.S. "by self invasion."

Republican officials then allowed speakers to defend and refute the resolution. One speaker, who was identified as "Joe," said illegal immigrants were Marxist and under the influence of the devil. Another, who declined to give her name to the Daily Herald, said illegal immigrants should not be allowed because "they are not going to become Republicans and stop flying the flag upside down. ... If they want to be Americans, they should learn to speak English and fly their flag like we do."

Senator Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, spoke against the resolution, saying Larsen, whom he called a "true patriot and a close friend," was embarrassing the Republican Party.

"I agree with 95 percent of this resolution but it has some language that is divisive and not inspiring other people to its vision," he said. "This only gives fodder to the liberal media to give negative attention to the Republican Party."

So illegal immigrants are the Devil? I thought they were Catholic. Not sure what you're getting at, but I don't like where this is headed.

Please tell me that the Daily Herald is merely plagiarizing from The Onion. :(

This guy Larsen is a loon if he thinks that illegal aliens control the media or are trying to destroy christian America. This sure smells of being a farce piece to me.

If it weren't Utah I'd be inclined to immediately agree. However, maybe we should keep an eye on Snopes, just in case :)

Points to consider:

1) This is not Utah. It's Utah County. May not mean much to most, but those with familiarity will understand.

2) The guy is the chairman of the state legislative district's party. Not the state party, not the county party, but the legislative district. It's not exactly a heavily sought-after position.

3) The more established members of the party, in this case the state Senator, point out that the resolution was pretty dumb.

4) Nobody bothered to stick around. It's not like people stuck around to vote for it. And sure people could have stayed to vote against, but I don't think anybody took it seriously.

5) It's the Daily Herald. There only thing that was ever worth reading there was Eric Snider's Snide Remarks column.

While if true it's abhorent and saddening, it's not like there aren't nut jobs in every party.

It's the mainstream Republican ideas that are really more disturbing.

what? I thought the gays we're ruining america! Now it's immigrants doing the work of Satan? And what roll to violent video games and music play in all this?

Unless Satan sent the gay immigrants violent music and video games as training aids before they attacked america. Your a cleaver one Satan! :p

Sheesh...what else can you say to this?

Have mercy on the guy; obviously he's suffering from dementia. I suspect a Thorazine drip is in order. Maybe even ECT.

Sorry but up here in the Salt Lake County I am afraid that we are going to have to laugh at those guys down South. :p :p :p :p

Relax, he's from Utah and referring to Southern Utah as "the South", if I interpret things correctly.

"there is nothing they won't do"Isn't that why so many illegal immigrants get work here?

Seriously, though, it's scary that people could even possibly think this type of crap.

No matter where (in Utah) they live.

The truly scary part is that enough people in that neck of the woods must feel the same way, or nobody who does would have the nerve to speak these thoughts out loud -- let alone, in a public forum.

I would be considered as an ultra-conservative Christian (but not a nut case) in the US, and even I don't buy this crap.

Satan likes the US where it is. Most of us are financially well off and don't think they need God. Why would he want to destroy that? ... especially if the illegals are considered by most to be Catholics.

The problem isn't one of ideological acceptance. It's ideological apathy. I remember the Provo mayoral campaign my senior year (off-year). The incredibly low turnout (around 10% of registered voters), especially given the sizable well-educated population was disgusting. Considering that Provo/Orem is houses most of the county's population - is it surprising that some folks from out in east Springville will mouth off?

That's sort of a loaded question. I don't know much about the demographics of Utah but I do know that people generally don't make hateful statements in public if they think they'll be called on them. This kind of thing requires a social support network of fellow travelers.

Actually I was wondering why didn't more BYU students show up at these protests?

They did protest Cheney and certainly BYU being an international school needs to have more action to allow for unrestricted immigration.

Unrestricted immigration is obviously not a solution - it would be a disaster. Meanwhile, controlled immigration of the right people is a huge positive for this nation. The question is how to find a good balance. Taking in more people than the economy can absorb is unwise. Taking in the wrong people is even more unwise. Not taking in the right people is stupid. Fact is, our immigration policy is hopelessly broken. And it has actually more to do with our economy and even culture - what kind of country do we wish to live in? If your #1 concern is cheap lettuce, well, opening borders to unskilled agricultural workers is the way to go. If on the other hand, you are willing to forego some of the benefits of lower prices provided by unskilled labor (and that goes across a broad spectrum or goods and services in the nation), and you put the emphasis on ramping up our knowledge based industries, you'll slam shut the immigration of unskilled labor and reward the skilled labor. If you throw in cultural factors (not racial or ethnic), you'll complicate things significantly, but you'll buy greater national cohesion.

The truth: there is no political will to seriously discuss immigration - not on the left, and not on the right.

This is how the a$$hats, like the ones from this article, get their voices heard - because the rest of us sit silent and paralyzed.

I interviewed for a job in salt lake city in 2000, glad I didn't take it. SLC seemed ok, but it had a very strange feel to it. didn't know the rest of the state was gun toting republican godfearing freqs.

actually, I should live there and annoy them, now that would be fun with a capital f!

I really enjoyed SLC a lot when I visited 10 years ago and of course, the fact that we both have IKEA (coming soon) and the Apple Store are the best reasons to stay here.

Plus I get my govt. discount here so I am happy about that.

Agreed - even the Senator didn't seem to go too all out against it, calling Larsen a "true patriot and a close friend" as opposed to a raving lunatic.

To be fair, someone did saying something about him being an embarrassment and giving fodder to the left. Despite those few nutcases who agreed with him, you will find a majority (yes, even in Utah) will at the least roll their eyes. As said, it's the very vocal minority that ruins it for the rest. Were I in that position, I'd want to distance myself. But I feel that way about Ann Coulter too, and look at all the people who like her.

Though, after her last tirade, it's considerably less so as you may have noticed, so there's still hope yet.
