I was just wondering... if "OS X" is pronounced "OS ten", then how would you pronounce "OS X 10.3"? Or would you just write "OS 10.3"? I realize that this isn't the most pressing question, but it's been bugging me for the past few days.

I generalize the OS as simply "OS X" (ten). However, when talking specifically which version, I'll say "I'm running 10.2, 10.2.6. etc." ;)

Same thing goes for OS 9.

You say "ten", "ten point whatever" and you write OS X 10.whatever.

And the easiest way to say "ten point three" is "Panther". :P

So do you say 10.2.6 is "Jaguar point six"?

i just say the numbers straight, e.g., ten two six, ten three, etc. life's too short for saying full names of OS and software versions :D

When I am just referring to OSX I say O S X. Or OS sex which ever you prefer. When it is a specific version number I say for example ten point two point six.

OS X sounds cooler, OS ten is the "right" way, the "official" way of writing something like 10.2 would be "Mac OS X version 10.2 Jaguar" and the awesomest way to say 10.3 is Panther...:D
writing stuff like x.2.6 is annoying

That's the awesomest English I've ever heard......:D

I'd say it's "oh ess tehn" or "tehn too sicks" depending on what you're talking about. I do agree about übergeek's pronounciation of 10.3 though - "pan' thur" is just awesomer. And if someone is just asking about it generally, I say "jay' gwar." God forbid anyone is still saying "poo' mah." ;)

Careful now, that's "Jag-you-are" unless you're Jobs and then it's Jagwyre.

Careful, don't do it to a Windows PC, or it might give you a virus.

Oh, come now, Falsey, I pronounce Jaguar like jagwyre. There's nothing wrong with it. What bothers me about Steve is how says, "dot" such as "Ten dot two". While we're talking about words and such, does anyone else hate the word "colonel"? Yeah, me too...

Love, luck, and lollipops y'all...

I say Jag-wire.

(And I couldn't figure out what the reporters were trying to read into the pronunciation as Jag-"wire". I just thought it was a yankee thing... :p ;))

Yep, that's how i am too, ever since 7.5.1 - 7.5.3 - 7.5.5 and how people would be using one of these three OS's... tried "point three" or "point five" but that confused people even more... So it became "seven five three" or "seven five five". And it carries through to today-- ten two six.

Hey, any Brits in the audience? I maintain that jag-you-war is a fake British accent, because the actual word is jag-war (coming, I think, from Spanish). The Americans are mangling the King's English again.

Let's analyze the word "Jaguar" shall we?

I realize that it's an accent thing, but how on Earth did one of the possible pronunciations become "Jag' wyre"? There's no I!! "Jaguire" - now, then I'd believe it.

At least when someone says "Jay-gyoo-ah" they're spelling it right.

the european way to pronounce s x is "os x" where "x" is like the letter x in you language (e.g.) english. that's how i've always pronounced it anyway.

similarly, as M$ copied the X to their system name, i've never heard of "ten p".

and never heard of "uni ten" either.

i take the "x" as unix or *x. always done so. if it was "ten" the 9.x would have been "OS XI" and OS 8.x would have been "OS XII" etc. which they weren't.

I've decided that, because of this particular thread, I'm going to pronounce "OS X" as "ossex." It flows better than "oh es ten." And satisfies the unix geeks who say that the X is from unix and therefore should be "eks."

Not only that but it could lead to confusion. A "x" in a version number usually indicates a variable number (i.e. compatible with 10.2.x)

I say it ten- point- whatever if I'm talking about a specific version, if not I go by the codenames (Panther, Jaguar)
