Tips on a gift for a friend who is a girl.

You might want to be a bit more specific on the friend part.
For example:
- Is she your girlfriend?
- Is she a buddy?
- Is she a close friend who happens to be female?
- Is this a special birthday for any reason?
- What kind of handmade things does she like?
That will help us know more about the person that you are talking about, and then give better advice.

two things came to mind when i thought about this:
iTunes card. to me, this is the perfect gift because i spend so much at the iTunes Store that any amount of money i get free from someone to spend there is greatly appreciated. a little impersonal, though.
picture frame. go to a crafts store and buy a plastic frame. decorate it. put a picture of you and her inside. fantastic.

what does she like? if she likes baseball, buy her a cap or something. or a nice book. what has she been eyeing on lately?
Wouldn't really want to do that especially because she has a boyfriend... and stuff.
I sort of like the cupcake idea, but the first thing that comes to mind is quantity and presentation. I came up with a great idea for it.

given the new information (that she has a boyfriend) i change my answer. forget the gift and go with a card. it doesn't make sense (to me) to invest time and energy getting her something if she's not your significant other. a card is usually enough to convey that you care without going overboard. i think you'll make yourself sick trying to come up with something when a card (and a nicely written note, of course) will translate the same message.

Depends on if you want to get laid, slapped or hugged.
So... make her a nice homemade dinner. Buy a cupcake and put a candle in it. Chicks dig that.

We're Mac, not PC. We are creative. PCs buy cards because they can't come up with something on their own or are to lazy to try.

Second graders make cards for their mommy and Valentines. Adults give or make gifts. Not popsicle stick houses or do-it-yourself cards ferchristsakes. 😎

come from some one who has had a long time friend who is close to me and is female.
For gifts think about her and what she likes. Do not worry about if she has a BF or not because you both know where you 2 stand. Also since you are close it is not going to matter anything about the BF because he should understand.
What does she like? Put some though into it. I given a wide range of gifts over the years to this female friend of mine. The big thing is putting though into it. One gift that went over well one year was a chess set that I knew she wanted and it did surprise her because she didn't know I knew that she wanted it (I had a little help from her mother). Other years I gave her something she told me in passing that she like then their where others I quite frankly just had her give me a list of things.
Over the years she had BF's and they accepted me as one of her friends and knew we where close friends.
My advice is you know her. You know what she likes. Do not worry about if it seems all like you are dating. I given my female friend gift like that before because I knew she liked them and I knew she wanted it but we both knew that it meant and that it had nothing to do with date like gift it was just the fact that she like it.
I close with this friend of mine we been pretty close since before I got out of HS and now I am close to finishing up college and we still are close.
