IFO Apple Store (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/stores/meatpacking_0507.html) posted photos from the construction site of what will be the location of the largest New York City Apple Store.
http://images.macrumors.com/article/2007/05/06/applestore_300.jpg (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/stores/meatpacking_0507.html)
The 3rd Apple Store in New York City is to be located at 401 W. 14th Street in the Meatpacking District. The new store is said to provide 32,000 square feet of floor space, significantly more (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/04/28/special_report_third_manhattan_apple_store_to_dwarf_them_all.html) than their existing Apple Store SoHo (21,577 sq feet) and Fifth Avenue (25,000 sq feet) locations.

This is going to be right around the corner from me, so I'm super excited. I hope it has a large theatre area/classes like the SoHo store. Or I might even sign up for the one-to-one service since it's so close.
Anyone know when this store is estimated to be completed?

Right, the NY metro area has 19 million people. But that's 42% fewer people than Canada has.

Right, I was being ironic about the scary enormity of NYC's pop density.
But looking at it logically, a spread out population that needs more stores per person than NYC also means each store generates less sales. A lot of thinly-populated places in the US could use an Apple store too, to save a long drive, but would they sell enough to pay for the store? Hopefully so--but maybe the high-density areas are where Apple is expanding first, leaving the online store as a stopgap for other areas (like where my parents live).

Midtown, Meatpacking, and SOHO are three different neighborhoods and i am sure Apple has tons of analysis showing who they are and how many customers they can expect in such parts of town. i don't think they would go to the expense if they were not positive the new store would hold it's weight on the sales line.

Agreed about TekServe. I'm sure they'll be taken out eventually if Apple really has them in its sights, although their repair service might persist in a smaller storefront.
Who knows how many NYC stores Apple has planned, but the more the merrier from where I sit. I'll bet you they open a smaller store in Brooklyn Heights one of these days and probably something one the Upper West Side. The "right" neighborhoods for Apple stores are pretty easy to pick out (they have all the other superhot chainstores...).

Can anybody comment on the location? Not a new yorker here, and I realize I know a bit about SoHo and 5th ave, but nothing about the meatpacking district.
Until about the year 2000, the Meatpacking district was fairly desolate. There were still working meatpacking plants, a couple cool but relatively unpopular restaurants (Florent, Rio Mar), a mostly gay after-hours scene, and a large selection of transvestite prostitutes. I make it sound bad, but it was actually a cool area.
But with Mayor Giuliani shutting down much of New York's party scene, and the opening of a popular expensive restaurant (Pastis), the Meatpacking District became hip and popular. Now it's crowded with lots of expensive restaurants and bars, straight night clubs, and designer clothes stores (Stella McCartney, John). New Yorkers don't go to that area much anymore. It's mostly for tourists and out-of-towners. Give it a few more years and it will be just like SoHo.

I went from being really creeped everytime I had to visit friends' lofts in the meatpacking district (remember "Basic Instinct") to being unable to afford the rent there. This started with artists being unable to afford SOHO and branching out. Anyway, there goes the neighborhood......
I'd love to have an Apple store in downtown Montreal, instead of the 20 minutes to get to the store in Laval. It's not like Montreal doesn't have the designers using Macs.

Here in Minneapolis we have a store that is one of the first Apple resellers in the midwest. Apple loves these guys and therefor did not/will not supply Apple with a more land mark store. Of course since we do have the mall of America the store there might get a new space with a second floor. But still I want a big Apple store around my parts.:(
errr. correction. Apple will not step on the toes of these guys as they have such a great relationship. Not to make it sound like the city or other retailers are not allowing Apple to build a more landmark store.

Oh, I realize I was being extremely optimistic with those time estimates. :p I bought my Macbook at the 5th Ave store on a Friday at 2AM or so, and I believe that it took my friend and I a solid 70-80 minutes to get from there back home to Brooklyn on the Q (perhaps 3 stops into the borough, at most). tell me about it... 2 apple stores in all of Canada... one on the outskirts of Toronto, and the other conveniently located in Laval (north of montreal)...
Actually there are currently four Apple stores in Canada ... three in Toronto (one downtown) and one in Laval, which is a large suburb of Montreal (but rather far from downtown).
There are none in Vancouver or Ottawa, respectively Canada's 3rd and 4th largest cities and both markets with a significant technology industry. That makes Apple's retail absence from those markets all the more puzzling. It's not just that they're big cities, it's that they have the kinds of folks who would buy Macs.
In the case of Vancouver, metro population just over two million, it has no Apple stores while Seattle, two hours away by car and roughly the same size, has four stores in the metro area. (Maybe they just did that to tweak you know who?) Meanwhile, Palm Beach County FL, pop 1.5 million, where the largest city (West Palm) has only 250,000, boasts three Apple stores ... amid lots of folks who think computers exist solely to embarrass them in front of their grandchildren.
So saying that "of course NYC could use more stores," or that they need to place stores in large population centers, kind of misses the point. There are at least half a dozen Apple stores in the NYC metro area; after this one opens, three of 'em will be in Manhattan. Meanwhile, other, quite large metro areas with attractive markets for Apple are completely unserved.
Well I'm happy since my nearest Apple Store is only 5 miles away. But I don't see the need for yet another store in new york.

The entire district was once, literally, a meat-packing district: blood ran in the gutters, the place reeked to high heavens, etc. There are two meat packers remaining on the far west side of the area, but it is now filled with high-end boutiques, velvet-rope clubs, and "hot" restaurants.
As to why/how this happened, I won't bore the board with the a discussion of Manhattan real estate, but the Meat Packing District has the authentic "charms" that turned SoHo, TriBeCa, et al into major commercial hubs (original cobblestone streets, interesting building stock).

Here in Milwaukee we currently have one, with a second due to open (with in about 500 yards of where I live - Yippee!) later this year.

The simple reason is NewYork City is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. Business can do things here that would never fly ANYWHERE else in the country. I've been into both Apple stores in Manhattan at several different times during the day and theyre always packed. At the 5th ave store, you cant even look at a machine because there are too many people sitting at them checking their email.
This alone shows the necessity for at least one more store, I wouldnt be suprised if we end up with 5 stores within Manhattan.
Most large scale businesses open here because success is practically guaranteed, especially a product line like Apples. Why open a store if its not going to be profitable?
I once read that the population of NYC doubles every morning. Meaning there are roughly 7-8 million residents, and another 7-8 million commuter and tourists that come in everyday. That is a tremendous amount of people to serve within a 25 sq mile area.
If even .1% of the daily population bought only a Macbook per year, that would represent a minimum of $16,000,000.00 in sales... not bad odds

Heres Why:
Visitors (international and domestic) to New York City in 2006: 44 million
Visitor spending (international and domestic) in 2005: $22.8 billion
It's probably closer to 25 billion today and I see many of those 44 million visitors shopping in one of only two stores.

I like the fact that there is going to be a west side Apple store. It's a pain for me to get the east side of Manhattan, and now I can take the A train to 14th street and walk down 1 block. Though I always thought that 9th avenue is kind of ****** in general...
As for Tekserve, I doubt they will go away. They give you the straight dope on what Mac products have the most problems (like the Studio display CRTs in early 2000), and they have sales of Mac products at decent discounts.

Was there a restaurant on the corner? Part of the location also used to be Western Beef.
Yeah, the restaurant was called Markt. Good belgian beer, mussels, and fries, although I found the clientele to be pretty lame.

Honestly, this pisses me off. Yes, I know New York is a very large city, and practically doubles in population during the work day, but it still makes me sick.
I live down in Louisiana. The closest Apple store is 6 hours away in Houston, and not even in a very easily accessible part of Houston to boot. I wish Apple would be a good corporate citizen and take advantage of the Hurricane Katrina "GO ZONE" tax credits and build a store in the French Quarter down in New Orleans.
But, what am I saying? I wouldn't want to invest in New Orleans right now anyways with all the rampant crime and incompetent politicians.

There are about 1,000,000 residents in Manhattan. During the day there are about 4,000,000 people in Manhattan at work, play, etc.
That's more than double...
As for all 5 boros, there are 8 million residents; 12 million during the day.

Hudson intersects with both 9th and 14th at that spot so the description was right.
I agree that Tekserve will survive though they will probably take a hit. As for them being straight shooters, I think it depends on who you talk to. I went in there once asked about the pink cast to the Apple 23" display and the salesguy flat out denied he had ever heard or seen the problem, even as we were standing in front of a display model that was as pink as a gay pride parade.
BTW, those are my pics on the ifoAppleStore site so I'm happy to see people appreciate them.

I just wish they had an actual store here in Montreal and not in Laval

Laval can't even afford their own Metro, why do they have an Apple Store?
Plus all their seminars are in french, while my OS is in english...

I'm really surprised that NYC only has 2 Apple stores at present.
Here in Milwaukee we currently have one, with a second due to open (with in about 500 yards of where I live - Yippee!) later this year.
So Milwaukee will have two and we are a lot smaller than NYC.
MANHATTAN has two stores so far, with a third (in the meat packing district) on the way. New York City has another one in Staten Island. Meanwhile, including the suburbs the metro area has _at least_ six or seven Apple stores. (The number varies according to how far out into the Long Island and NJ 'burbs you want to consider the metro area extending.)
I used to live just a few blocks from the meat packing district (now I'm far, far away). While I think it will be nice to have a fruit market there too (sorry, couldn't resist) I still think Apple should pay long-overdue attention to some other geographic markets. For example, all those television production crews and video game designers in Vancouver BC.

I agree! Vancouver needs a store. It's such a pain using the resellers. I'm really surprised it's taking Apple so long to open a store in Vancouver.
When they do open a store here, they should reward us with a flagship store. :D

I checked Google Maps, and you're right... Goes to show that I don't really frequent that area much. I am more familiar with uptown and midtown than downtown.
As for Tekserve, during the time I had to use them, the techs there were pretty good, so maybe the good guys graduated to something else.

You do realize that its about Demographics and the Incomes in those Demographics.
That wouldn't explain stores located in Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and my personal favorite, Des Moines, Iowa.
Sure, Iowa is really hoppin' right now because of the ethanol industry, but most farmers aren't rich, and definitely aren't in the "demographic" and there's really not much of anything else in Iowa except for corn.
Yes, the city of New Orleans might have had a lot of poor people, but have you ever been to Uptown, my friend? Or the suburbs of New Orleans? Mandeville? Trust me, just because the majority of the residents of the CITY of New Orleans are on welfare doesn't mean the immediate region is too.

You're kidding, right? With only two stores, New York is still underserved. It's a very, very big city.
Yeah, but three stores within like 3 miles of each other (if that)?
They should put 9at least) one in Brooklyn.

It's a pain in the arse to go crosstown. When this store opens, now I can take only the A train to get annoyed by Apple store personnel. The SoHo store and the Fifth Avenue store require a few train transfers.

guys take it easy.
In greece we have ZERO apple stores yet. There are only PC resellers carrying apple in some corner.
I hope sometime soon Apple will consider open one for 4,5 mil people living in Athens because many of us dont like the local 3rd party representative that handles all apple trafic through Greece n Cyprous.

a West Island station would be much more profitable than a Laval one.
Keep it as STCUM, not hybridize as STCUL (lol, Saint-Cul lol...)
I think we're diverging from the topic.
Wish we had that new apple store here. :(

well since its the only mom and pop shop left in the city and apple make's more money from a sale in their store as well as on the repairs I dont think that apple would be sad to see them go.

if anyone here is honestly been the soho or fifth avenue, you understand, without a doubt, that apple can sustain another store(probably a few more). As for the extra space, i think they'll definitely have a classroom(like fifth). Also, apple has a reputation for being unique, so i totally see them doing something strange and new with the room thats left over.

I'd like to see another one downtown.
I don't frequent either of the NYC Apple stores. I go to one close to home. I'd love to have one where I can go during Lunch. We do have J&R which has a dedicated Apple floor, but it doesn't have the same feel...
