Hi everybody,

Any one updated his/her iMac G4 800 Htz or similar with a Large HD (400 GB or more)

I would like to update to 7200 rpm, 16mb Cash, 500GB, but I heared that it could have some OverHeating issue?

Aslo Any recommendation for which HD to choice (Seagate Barracuda, etc)

Thank you for your help

The 800Mhz iMac didn't have large drive support I think. Perhaps someone can correct me on that. The largest partition it can cope with it 128GB. So you could put in a 400GB, but only be able to use 128GB of it. So you'd be better off with a 160GB.

I'd go with a Seagate drive personally. Don't worry about overheating. Just make sure that all the vents are clear. Also don't forget to renew the thermal paste when reassembling the bottom casing.

Good luck,

Alex Price.:)

There are several reports of people getting a large drive installed in their 800MHz iMac G4s on xlr8yourmac.com and the full drive was recognized. They also have a decent tutorial on the process.

Thanks for your reply.

I know in Apple website we say that the 800HTZ Model doesn't support 48bit Large Drive (More than 128GB).

However many people out there installed 160, 200GB, so it should be OK for a Larger Drive (400 or 500).

My main concere is the Overheating Issues.

- Does 500GB 16Mb Cash 7200 rpm will heat much more than 60GB 4200?
- Is Seatgate better than Samsung in term of heating? or simply they are all the same and with the new technology HD are more efficiant, faster, less noisy, and they produce less HEAT?

Thank you for your input
