Should I update to 10.4.9 on my iBook G4 happily running 10.4.6?

Hi, I have a 3 year old iBook G4 1.07 GHz with 1.25 GB RAM happily running 10.4.6. Awhile back, I installed 10.4.7, which caused my iBook to crash constantly. I took my iBook to an Apple store, and they re-installed 10.4.6, which fixed the problem. Now I am wary of installing updates, and I'm curious whether I should update to 10.4.9. I searched and did see a couple negative experiences with 10.4.9 on iBooks, but I don't know if those were anomalous. [My experience with 10.4.7 was apparently not anomalous.]

iBook G4 users...what do you think?

The only issue I've had with 10.4.9 is that my Warcraft 3: the Frozen Throne disc image, which I made a while back so I wouldn't have to carry the CD with me, somehow became damaged when I switched from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 and requires confirmation when loading it, which unfortunately messed up a little script I made that loaded the image and then the game. Other than that, I haven't had any issues on my iBook G4.
 
thanks for your reply, Xeem! Have you noticed any improvements with 10.4.9? [FWIW, I'm not a gamer; I mostly use Mail, Safari, Firefox, Preview, iTunes, and M$ Word.]
 
No major improvements for me, but 10.4.9 has treated my iBook fine. I did have to re-install Flash Player after the latest security update, for reasons I don't understand. But that's the only problem I've had on the last few dot updates with Tiger.

You need the latest dot upgrade of Tiger to get the latest security updates, right? Or is that not true? I'd think getting 10.4.9 would be wise purely from the standpoint of patching vulnerabilities. It's been a relatively active six months for Apple in this regard.
 
Does anyone have any more input?

Also, if I decide to update, what is the best way to go about it? I'm going to repair permissions first...

yeah i say go for it, if you are feeling really nervous about it maybe you should clone your disc in to a diferent one....
 
Would you happen to have an external Firewire hard drive? You could use Carbon Copy Cloner to make it boot a cloned version of your iBook's hard drive and install the updates to see if they work or not. If not, no worries, just boot up from your untouched iBook HD again and erase the Firewire HD. That method has saved my parent's iMac from an OS re-install. 🙂
 
I have two ibook G4s which i updated and they work just as fine, a bit better even in some cases. Go for the update.
 
10.4.9 runs fine on my 867MHz PowerBook 12" with 640MB RAM. Well apart from being fairly slow, everything runs almost perfectly.

So on a 1.07GHz iBook with 1.25 GB RAM, it can be nothing short of a lot better.
