DISTURBING BEHAVIOR !!Never seen this before...any thoughts / tips??

Just recently, my much loved Powerbook 667 / 768 ram has been behaving oddly.
I generally use it quite a bit, but also keep it scrubbed up nicely with DISK FIRST AID/ DISKWARRIOR 3 / REPAIR PERMISSIONS etc. Have installed most system updates- and am running on 10.2.6. Usual array of graphics software - nothing out of the ordinary. having been an Os x user since beta days, I've had a few kernal panics, but not one for ages - until yesterday. Odd things have been occurring over the last week or so, such as my track pad has been losing it's finger tap setting in the preferences, and I have to reset it. Then today it didn't want to start - it made the right startup chime, but screen stayed black. Had to control-command power-key to get it going. It started fine, but after a couple of minutes, the screen dulled by about half a tone, starting at the top and quickly spreading down to the bottom. It then put up a message in several languages that I had to re-start it, by holding down the power key for several seconds. This was in English, French, German, and Japanese/Chinese - NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE!!. ( Note- I was using Omni Disksweeper on all three partitions - but have used it many times with no problems )
I then restarted as instructed, and it started fine - but it had put iChat / Mail / and Sherlock back in my dock!! Most strange - any thoughts?? Tips?? Warnings?
Crucial stuff has been backed up!

I don't know about most of your problems, but the screen that came up in many languages that told you to restart is just the basic OS 10.2 kernel panic screen. It's quite an improvement over 10.1, which just put up a black screen with some nonsense white text.

Try booting into single user mode (command-option-s at startup) and running fsck - see if that gives you any errors. Then type "reboot" to get out of it. Also, have you installed anything recently that could be causing the kernel panic? What are you doing when they happen?

Try reseting the powermanager, its a little button on the mother board that i think you can access by lifting out the keyboard...someone on this board probably knows more about where it is than i do though

this may sound odd but it could be your battery. Try letting it go totaly dead and then charge it and see what happens. Also have you recently installed RAM or performed a firmware update??

You shouldn't need to reset the PMU - the power isn't being affected in this situation. It sounds more like a software-based problem.

Eh, your first Kernal Panic.

Look in the crash log in the log. Console should show something.

Sounds like a faulty RAM brick to me. Remove your extra RAM and try again.

Also, you're not running beta software like iChatAV, are you?

How much free space do you have on your harddrive, systemsettings usually self-deletes when there are under 500mb free space.

well -- I've got 8gig hard disk space, so reckon that ok

Regarding battery, if it is at fault -- anyway to check, and would it be covered by warrentee ( shpelling??)

I think this has happened while plugged in-but not 100% on that --

Isolate the battery issue by leaving the battery out when you are on mains power.

If everything OK, then use just the battery with no mains power.

If the error occurs in only one of the scenarios then you may have a power supply issue.

If the error occurs in both you will want to isolate whether you have software or hardware issues. eg reinstalling a clean system. Testing the ram etc.

IMO I stay away from the disk utilities in system X, unless I encounter a problem which persists after a restart. Persistently fixing software with these diagnostic tools may create problems that originally weren't there. Some of these utilities come with a use at your own risk disclaimer. Read the discussions/reviews associated with these products and you'll see a diverse range of outcomes.

Kernal Panics can do some funny things, lemme tell you... one I had once caused the dock to revert to it's factory state. Another swapped every icon in my Applications folder with one in my ~/Documents folder (it's quite unnerving to see half my apps have folder icons and Word document icons). Another restart fixed it. I wouldn't worry too much, unless it persists.

hmmmmm

would that explain why a lot of files- - deeper ones such as log / stuffit engine to name a few - suddenly have dreamweaver icons?? any anger to this??

Could be, if you had a kernal panic. *shruggs*. OTOH, there's other things that can cause that... if they open in DW when you double-click them, then something screwed with the file associations... in my case, all the files (in both places) opened normally, and it was just the icons that were affected.
