for some reason, i'm attracted to music in video games, especially from a few series (sonic being one of them), but for some reason, i can never find them (at least in this country). anyone have any idea how to locate them?

Many games have the audio tracks right on the CD. So just buy the game and look at the disc. Track 1 is the data and then 2 thru whatever is often audio tracks. I just get the music from those tracks. I really like the music on the old Mech Warrior. So go ebaying...

i'm talking about console games, with sonic next gen being in particular.

It's difficult to find that stuff, if it ever is released in soundtrack form. Mainly b/c of the crappy legal agreements composers who score for games usually make with the game developers. ('Work for hire' contracts.)

Composers basically hand over ALL rights of the music to the company (ex. EA, Sony, etc.). And then the game companies don't care to put the effort and money to release soundtracks, as they would rather just make games.

There is 1 website that I know where you can get video game sound tracks, but I'm not sure how legal it is, so I won't post it, but it shouldn't be too hard to find on Google.

You simply cannot beat the soundtrack to Katamari Damacy. Perfect J-pop goodness. Amazing game, as well.

I'm very partial to Kirby and Pokémon tracks but of course, Mario beats all. :)
The Super Smash Bros Melee CD rocks!

IMO, the music from Chrono Trigger cannot be beat.

that's too bad....i was looking forward to rocking out to some video game tunes...and it seems like they don't want to release the stuff at all for some stupid reason.

If you're looking for ripped tracks, there are at least a couple of websites that offer that.
OCRemix is a good source if you're looking for remixed tracks.

I don't think that there are many ways of actually obtaining them from the companies unless you're in Japan where they're more likely to release it.
The new Pokémon games have an official CD, for example.

is this another product of big label consumerism, where music is defined as pop only, and non vocal music is not considered music? too bad.

sonic soundtracks are my favorites, with megaman, mario and some others close behind.

I was going to recommend OCremix for at least some variations.

Katamari has to be my favorite soundtrack in the last 10 years (or at least its the only one that made me seek it out)... Na naaaa na na na na na na.

Old school my favorites would have to be the original Mario theme and the Sam and Max hit the Road music.

Here is James Hill rocking SMB on the uke:

I love Grand Theft Auto soundtracks. Especially fun to listen to when you're on the freeway and looking for a shiny new "Infernus" to hijack.
