Okay so this maybe a stupid question, but if I edit a hi def camcorder video, can you:

1. make it an HD movie (which format do I use)?
2. use the aTV to watch it?

Quite easy if you're using iMovie HD...the software now includes a preset for exporting to Apple TV. Read this. More details and alternative approaches can be found in the aTV discussion forums on Apple's website.

So does iMovie only export 720p or does it do 1080i (older HDTV no 1080p)? I am not at my computer so I can't look and see.

Well, the Apple TV only supports up to 720p (not 1080i), so using the preset in iMovie with HD source material from your camcorder would export video at 1280 x 720, 24p. Of course, iMovie HD itself supports up to 1080p.

So I can import it into iMovie at 1080i, then I export it at 720p to play on aTV?

Also can you rip HD DVD with the DVD-R in the iBook or can it only rip normal DVDs?

I am thinking aTV will be a better way to watch my camcorder movies than hooking it up to the TV
