I remember those days like yesterday. When it was new, it actually wasn't that bad. :)

I wasn't sure about OS 8. 8.5 & 8.6 were nice. I found 8 crashed a lot though.

Mac OS 8 did incredibly well in first day and first week sales, if I recall. I was about 13 or 14 at the time and I know that I saved up all my money and bought it the day it came out. :)
While System 7.5/7.6 is my favorite classic OS of the bunch, I find 8.5/8.6 to be the premier classic OS.

8.6 and 9.1 were two of the most reliable for me.

I wish the article was more of an article then a blurp.
I do remember though, when I was managing a book store and the "Mac OS 8 Bible" came out.
I think it was a week later that I bought the first mac I've owned myself.

I remember when we got my Grandfather's old Performa 6400 hand me down (200MHz, 32MB, 2.1GB hdd) he had upgraded to OS 8. He probably should have left it at 7.whatever it was. It was very unstable. And slow. I later got a 166MHz PC w/ Win95 while Mom took the Mac, and kinda missed the Mac sometimes, but not that much. Granted, it wasn't much better. Win98 and 2000 upgrades didn't really help, any more than getting slightly faster CPUs (200, 233, 333, then 400) and more RAM on better MBs, but I always wanted to go back to the Mac. ME was terrible, and I've only just lately upgrade to XP (kicking and screaming). Still sucks, even on an almost state of the art custom built PC. Won't be going Vista any time soon if I can help it.
OS 9 was ok, better than 8.5 or .6, and way better than OS 8, but it wasn't until OS X (actually, version .1 or .2) that I really wanted to come back full time. Had a Beige G3, then a G4, then a G5 iMac that I upgrade to Tiger. OS X couldn't have come soon enough.

I ran 7.6.1 on my LC 575 for a long before a friend of mine let me borrow his Mac OS 8.0 CD and I'd dual boot as 8.0 was slower and used more RAM (of my 36 MB total), but had better features which I liked. Mac OS 8.1 is still one of my favorite OSes released by Apple. :P
