A friend of my needs an old Mac OS for his Amiga.
I believe Apple set an old OS free, but I can't find any details about it.
-Question:
Is there an old Mac OS like 7.0 or 7.5 for free to download?
cheers.

Hi there,

I didn't know Amiga's could run Mac OS's? I knew they were based upon the same CPU's as macs but what makes them compatible?

Anyway, older versions of Mac OS (pre OS 8) are called System x. Apple lets you download System 7.5.5 for free from their servers. Have a browse round in the Support/Download areas and it should be there somewhere.

First off, the name "Mac OS" didn't become used until precisely Mac OS 7.6.

Up to 7.5.5 it was "System".

Second, IF you are going to download a System 7, make sure you get either System 7.1 or OS 7.6.1. Do not get 7.5.x (if at all possible), as System 7.5.x has several problems.

The latest free version is 7.5.5. The version of 7.5.5 on Apple's FTP site will only install on top of 7.5.3, but there's a full 7.5.3 install on that site too. But it's a big image, rather than individual floppies. If you need floppies, you can get 7.5.0 from ftp.zip.com.au.

7.5 was called System, but 7.5.2 and higher (or it could be 7.5.1) are called Mac OS. Updating 7.5 with the 7.5.3 update will change it from System to Mac OS.

Yes, you can run the Mac OS on Amigas. You can't do it directly, but can with additional software such as Microcode Solutions' Fusion.

Well that's just great, 7.1 and 7.6 isn't offered freely, just everything before 7.0.1 and 7.5.3...If I remember correctly. I don't know why they don't offer 7.1, its just beyond me.

Hopefully Apple will offer the newer Systems soon, I know a lot of people using older hardware have been clamoring for OS 8 to be released. But I don't think its going to happen, at least not until all of classic is considered dead completely, and I think that would be several years before that will happen. If/When it is released all of classic threw 9.1 will be offered. I personaly think it would be nice if they open-sourced it and see where it might lead.

No. The 7.6.1 updater will only update from 7.6.
