so what is the easiest way to record video using the in built iSight? do you get any control over the file format? yes i did search - thanks

Something like iMovie? You can then export to any format that you have Quicktime codecs for.

Or if you have Quicktime Pro go to File>New Movie Recording. Otherwise iMovie will work too.

I use a program called evocam. It's really cool and can detect motion. I think most use it as a security type application.

photo booth has a record video button in the bottom right.
