does it kernal panic alot?
are their control panes that say not implemented?
can you still use your printer?

I am running 350 MHz iMac and speed boost of interface speed is huge!
It feels slightly unstable but speed compensates for it.
Only thing I dont like is my modem not working
I definitely recommend that you make sure you can go back to jaguar if something goes wrong.
And a question.. I used archive and backup install, is there any way I can make "previous system" active so I can use it to boot?

i'm glad to hear that we crt imac users will still recieve some performance increases. as to booting from the archive, i'm pretty sure that the archive only keeps things like your /Library and /Users directories (osx needs pretty much every standard folder in the root directory, as well as all of the invisible /var /tmp /usr etc. ones) so booting from the previous system is not an option. the only easy/safe/possible? way to boot multiple versions of osx is to keep them on seperate partitions.

It's really FAST .. on my iBook I swear it's faster than Jaguar.
But I can't downgrade:confused: ?? I posted in the Software discussion so I won't mention it again here.

It seems to me that the greatest speed increases are on the oldest machines. The newer machines feel faster, but not that much. Just a little observation.

i wouldn't hold ur breath for a hack, ryan rempel of OWC usually only comes out with 1 towards the end of the build release cycle-- which is slated for the end of this year.

i got two KPs on install on a supported sawtooth. the quartz subsystem is buggy as hell for me. video card is a g4mx, 1GB RAM, SCSI 10K

i tried panther, and i just can't stand the look of it. i spent most of today clean installing jaguar back (cos i felt like it, mostly), restored my files and prefs with my iPod and then reinstalled all my apps.
didn't mess with panther much, i just hated the way they made a lot of things look. that user centric finder is like straight out of windows XP's start menu, or, more accurately, XP's "explorer"--where the main section is "my documents," the rough equivalent of your user folder. ah well, i realized you can basically make it like the old one. just have to wait for it to come out for real so unsanity can release upgrades to its stuff and i can demetallifize finder and get bachk the jag theme :)

oh, i am sure there is, man, but it is a time investment. panther is definitely fun to play with for awhile. i don't think it's quite ready to be your main OS though unless you just like playing on computers.

prolly find that roxio will release an update with the release of 10.3 to bring it up to scratch.
Also, it could just be that apple has not yet fully implemented the files and libraries that toast relies on.
Or toast does a version check of the libraries and os. if they dont match - toast dont run.
I dun really know - i dont got panther yet :(

I agree with Shadowfax- the new layout where they put the iDisk and Macintosh HD icons in the left pane makes it look way too much like XP. I'm also not a big fan of having the windows in Brushed Metal now, I, for one, still like Aqua with pinstripes. Though the top menu bar ugly. And those funny horizontal lines on the drop-down menus remind me of Gnome or KDE, BeOS even.
I also agree with iJon- I see nothing at ALL that would make me cough up $129. $29 maybe, but not $129

Betas are death. Fun to play with but usualy always die a horrible, horrible death. Betas are made to crash so they can get feedback and make a better operating system.
But hey im not going to tell you dont do it, just make sure your data is backed up somewhere.
Dont say we didnt warn you!!!!

If you have an iPod, install it on that, and play. Worked fine for me and when I was done looking, just unplugged the iPod and it rebooted into my normal Jaguar.
It's definetely still very rough around the edges, but I saw good promise. Expose is finally a decent way to manage windows, the Windows networking upgrades mean I won't have to shell out money for DAVE, Textedit opens Word documents, the Open/Save dialogs are a million times better and.... well just lots of other things that make the experience generally nicer. It did seem a bit faster too, which is always good.
I don't mind the changes to Aqua (the buttons instead of tabs and the less stripey stripes), but the continuing propgation of metal throughout the system is terrible. New finder shows promise, as I actually like having shortcuts on the left like that, but get rid of the metal and the daft way to choose labels please.
There's lots of stuff that I think makes it worth the cash, and I don't doubt they'll be more to come as development continues over the next few months. At the moment however, it was too rough to use as a full time OS.

What happens to the iPod when you install Panther on it....ie do you have to format the iPod, do you lose iPod player functionality, etc? If so, can it be restored? I would love to do that but I am somewhat scared of wrecking it....
shadowfax
Jun 27, 2003, 10:45 PM
i dunno if it has to be formatted. i doubt it. but you can always restore it with the iPod software updater. you just have to hook it up to a mac running OS X from its own hard drive and run it :)

I installed Panther on a separate partition, looked around for a while, then rebooted into Jaguar. Promptly received a kernel panic. I managed to figure out that the KP was caused by journaling being turned on on the Panther partition, as that is a standard thing for 10.3 now. Jag wasn't used to it, as expected. Now, thanks to Cocktail, I disabled journaling on the Panther partition and my comp is happy now.......

if you are talking about the ugly new titlebars, rock on man! ...i don't see how it is like a heart dropping, though, except that seeing them change it like that was really disappointing. i love the recessed buttons, hate the solid gradient.

I was actually describing the pain that comes from a kernel panic (gray windowshade). But I do agree with the solid gradient thing. It's just so lifeless.

here are a few problems i came across with in my 1 day of using panther as my primary os.
they arent many but they are annoying enough to have me do a clean instal of jag.
I ran it as the primary on my 17" PB with 1 gig ram.
For starters, Panther did not let me run many of the small programs i like using such as Toast or Candybar, but all the major Adobe, Final Cut, Dreamweaver stuff worked fine
The Backlit keyboard did not work after I installed Panther which annoyed me soo much that it was one of the main reasons i took it off.
The connect to server is still kinda buggy.
On the plus side, Panther is amazingly stable for a Pre-beta
Expose is awsome. 10 min of using it and it becomes second nature. The only thing i wished was to assign cmd+letter keys as hotkeys for expose. It only lets you work with the function keys. This poses a problem for any1 with a powerbook since f1-10 is already taken up.
There were no MAJOR problems. I found font book very entertaining to say the least. It took me a while to realize that it was in the apps folder - im a little slow :D
im not a pro user - and this is my first mac, but to me it seems like a good OS, better the Jag, and has features that will become soooooooo part of our everyday use, you wonder how you ever got along with out them.

i would just say KP or "that ominous screen dimming" or something like that for a kernel panic ;)

If not, about how much is required? that is plenty if you don't install the developer tools. but be warned, with that much free space (the 500 MB left when you install panther), you will get pisspoor performance. if i were you, i would take the music off it temporarily. you have it all on your hard drive, right?

call me dumb. Apple has to make it hard/damn near impossible to transfer music from your iPod to another computer. the idea is that it is just too easy to copy the stuff from one computer to another. they are all in hidden files on your iPod, and you would have to search the net for software to help you with getting your music back onto your computer from the iPod. here is one i found after about 10 seconds of searching: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12942

ThinkSecret on Friday confirmed my assertion that there was going to be more features added before Panther was released to the Public later this year. Also will you actually have to pay for it? I mean working where you do and all. In either case I think there will be some more eyepopping features added before it's released. Also it will be interesting to see if the metal is here to stay or if they provide a way of making a choice before the release.

plug in your ipod and when you boot from the cd it will be right there as a drive. you install it and boot from it, simple as that. people say here and there that you shouldnt do it, but ive done it and never had a problem with it, and other people shouldnt either. but if you are scared, as long as its under warranty what do you ahve to lose.

Dividers? I'm so glad they're back. Neatens it all up.
I'm not fond of the new finder either, I much prefer the current one. The exception to that is being able to put favorite folders down the left, makes file management so much easier (they're currently taking up room on my dock)
I think the under-the-hood improvements and swish new things coming justify the cost, it's not fair to judge now, it's only at alpha testing.
But to answer the orignal posters question, no, Panther is not my primary OS.
