$30 isn't much when talking about something as expensive as the iPhone, but every little bit helps. Because of changes at work (i.e. no more free blackberry) I had to get a phone/service today. I went to Cingular and signed a two year contract and bought their cheapest phone. It is $30. But, I get a $30 rebate AND, according to the salesperson who knows I plan to buy the iPhone, I can return the phone I got today within 30 days and get credit torwards another phone, including the iPhone. I get the credit even if I got the rebate. The only way I get hosed is if the iPhone comes out after June 23rd.

Again, $30 ain't much, but it's essentially free money.

i would have changed the phone to a Sony Ericsson W300i, you would have gotten $75 off with that phone.

How do you know you'll get to upgrade to an iPhone after you have already signed a contract for another phone. I thought the price of the iPhone was based on a new 2 year contract. I'm hoping that they'll have some upgrade path for current Cingular customers as I have a little over 1 year left on my current contract.

... I thought the price of the iPhone was based on a new 2 year contract. ...Nowhere have you heard that the iPhone would be subsidized. All reports are that you will get the iPhone for one of two prices based on the storage available on the model you buy-- $499 for 4 GB and $599 for 8GB.
