What is the best format to use your flash drive in for: 1-speed with a mac, and 2-for windows compatibility.

I opened disk utility and my choices are
MS-DOS
UNIX
Mac Extended (regular, journaled, case sensitive, case sensitive/journaled)

MS-DOS formats it as FAT32 which can be used in both windows and mac.

Thats what I figured, and I formated it in MS-DOS, but when I plugged it into an XP machine it said it needed to be formatted (which I couldn't do cause apparantly I didn't have rights to)

Try formatting it on Windows XP to FAT32 and then plugging it back into your mac to make sure it works.
