So rumor has it that next gen iPhone to have built in GPS.
i think that would be great to have it work like a tom tom or some other navigation device.

Maybe it will be in the 1st Gen...all phones (I think) have to have a positioning system as required by law...so it would be good sense to put it into use like directions :)

As stated above, it does have a limited GPS as required by law.
Don't hold me to this, but I think the only thing one would need is the software to use it.
Now it may not be the most accurate GPS hardware, but definitely accurate enough for the average user.

The e-911 works by triangulation and etc of the base stations, it has nothing to do with GPS, which works with satellites and all.
A GPS would be cool. N95 has it.

Yeah, this is correct.
As far as I'm aware, only the US required this location pinpointing service in new mobile phones (it has been an FCC requirement for a couple of years now). As beginner0 points out, the location is worked out not in conjunction with GPS satellites, but rather using cell sites and a bit of fancy mathematics. This wouldn't be suitable for using as navigation, as - as far as I'm aware - the precision is significantly less than with GPS (not to mention it wouldn't work where there wasn't coverage).

Well, apparently Google Maps does now support GPS devices in moble phones:

Hopefully this will also work on the iPhone, either through a bluetooth GPS receiver (like the TomTom one I have :) ) or, through the as-yet-unnanounced built in GPS on the iPhone. (I can still dream!)
