View Full Version : How will the next OS update influence existing Bootcamp install?

Let's say I get an MBP in June, install Bootcamp and Windows, and then upgrade to 10.5 whenever it gets released. Do you think my existing Windows partition will remain safe? Do you anticipate any other problems using my "beta born Bootcamp" with the RTM version of Bootcamp?

It could just be that the drivers are updated...I'm sure your data will be safe though, whatever happens.

It could be something to do with integrating virtualization, or something else really cool...

No one really knows...

I know I'd prefer to completely reinstall both my partitions rather than rely on a beta version partition, for a short inconvenience it will be more worthwhile.

and what about those of us who have boot camp, but aren't planning on getting leopard right away, will apple release a version to work on Tiger?

o sry. that makes no sense. i was had 2 thought processes in my head when i wrote this. what i meant was that the Bootcamp beta will expire at the release of leopard. how would people with tiger that aren't updating to leopard be able to use bootcamp. has apple said anything? i realize apple is probably the only one to know, but what has been the trend of the past?

Existing partitions are going to work fine. You probably won't be able to download the software after awhile, and I doubt they'll offer further updates if you don't buy 10.5, but if it's there, it will work. They've said so, but I can't recall when. They'd have to go our of their way to disable it, which I doubt they'd do.

Actually there was this (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/01/21/final-boot-camp-to-be-offered-to-tiger-users-for-30/) article on MacRumors earlier this year indicating that a final version of Boot Camp might be sold to Tiger users who don't want to upgrade to Leopard.

This might be a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway:

Once you've created the partitions and installed the drivers, what does bootcamp continue to do for you? Is it just the boot loader?

It is just the partitioning and the drivers, not the boot loader.
