OS X or Vista - which should I use as my main OS?

I really like OS X Tiger but I also like Vista Ultimate.

Right now I have Vista Ultimate x64 throught Bootcamp and it runs pretty good...it is a memory hog but I still like it.
Aero and the buttons just look so good.
But it sucks that I can't use my Apple remote in Vista which I use quite a lot.

Which one should I use as my main OS?

I love Exposé and Dashboard, and use them a lot. Especially Exposé. The "Sidebar" and "Flip 3D" don't compare, really.

It's a difficult choice, go with a proven reliable OS or go with XP SP3... er I mean Vista :confused:

Well, currently there aren't any Vista exploits, so security isn't yet an issue, but as someone who has used Windows since Win95 was released, I find Vista feels like XP with a skin (I know it's more than that deep down, but that's what it feels like). I don't find much of a wow factor with Vista.

I'm not going to vote, since only you can decide what you prefer to use.

But what I'd like to know, what do you really expect to get from such a poll on an Mac-related website?

OS X then upgrade to Leopard eventually. I don't think anyone here is going to say Vista as the PRIMARY OS.

I'd suggest using Mac OS X Tiger and then switch to Leopard when it comes out. There's nothing wrong with Tiger, it's a very reliable OS and I would use it over Vista any day.

Uh, continue to use both. That's the coolest part of the Intel chips, besides the speed increase. I finally upgraded and currently run XP in Boot Camp. But I use VMWare to read the BC installation so I never have to reboot. And MacFuse to read and write to the NTFS partition. Don't use Vista because I can't stand it, but that's just me.

Leopard looks good so far, but it's not that stable yet, which makes me think there's something big coming that the current dev build is missing.

Before asking the question OSX or Vista you should consider XP or Vista, and even the MS 'community' prefers XP.

Yesterday I asked a guy what his experiences were with Vista, he has used it, it was considerable slower then XP and he went back to XP.

His PC: P4 3.0Ghz, 1GB internal memory and a very good video-card.
Conclusion, Vista needs the core-duo, to have some acceptable performance.
Imagine, it needs a processor with 2 cores just to run the OS and to be able to compete with XP, for me an OSX/Vista comparison is even ridiculous.

( Compare this with OSX which runs very decent on a G4/600Mhz )

Depends what you want to do.

I work in OS X and have done for years. This is my main OS and used 95% of the time

The other 5% I'm on the computer, I play games in XP, but have just switched to Vista (but considering switching back because games like STALKER suck on Vista).

Just choose whatever you want.

After all it's 'your mac now' ;)

To tell you th truth... the only people that will tell you to use Vista are the Vista/Windows users themselves.

Linux community would tell you to use OS X (but hint you should use linux) because of their extreme hatred for MS and that OS X is the superior OS (as well as partly open-source)

BSD community will tell you to use OS X because of its Unix/BSD base

Solaris users would say the same as the BSD users.

I personally use linux only myself right now, but am waiting for the MBP update to get my first mac as I am not a open-source zealot (but do highly support it). I have tinkered with Vista a bit at work (I work at Costco) on our demo PCs and personally I can't find anything so great about it, its just feels so... whats the word... LIMITING (if you have used linux b4 you would know what I mean).

Also, KDE 4 (Linux UI) is on its way and will be ported over to OS X. It is fairly similar to the Windows UI and is the most customizable UI in the computer world right now (can be made to look identical to XP, Vista, and somewhat similar to OS X as well). It is slated to be released sometime in October I believe.

But then again... as a Linux user I support freedom of choice and therefore suggest that you use what you prefer.

I use OS X. Why? Because of security risks, I always do all my web browsing and web-based work in OS X, and I boot in Windows for gaming and specialty apps.

Since I'm most often using the web on my computer, I boot OS X as default.

Almost. In six months, Vista will be a big improvement for Windows users. Right now there are too many problems with incompatible apps, buggy drivers and slow performance.

I voted use tiger and the leopard, but if you really want to use vista, that's ok too. Vista has some nice little touches that make it better (to me) over XP in terms of usability, however, I prefer the interface in OS X.

In short, do what ever you want.

One was a virus that my AV couldn't remove, and another was when I clicked a link that was malicious and it wiped my hard drive. You best believe I learned from the experiences and kept the OSs up-to-date, ran AV and kept the sigs up-to-date, and learned how to configure the OS to not do certain things that are enabled out-of-the-box.

Anyone can vent about how insecure something is, but learning from it is a whole different story.

To the OP, I didn't vote (and won't) but my advise is to use what came installed on your Mac...OS X. My opinion with Vista isn't good, which is why I forced myself to have minimal exposure to Vista (basically, it has a LONG way to go before it become acceptable).

I know all that; I'm a systems admin as well. The majority of virus infections in my house came from letting my parents use the computers.

But that's the point;

OS X allows me not to care about these things. I have to deal with it at work all day, and I'd rather come home and not have to worry at all.

Agreed; Vista's still in a buggy state, much as XP was before the first service pack...quite likely worse (terrible performance, incompatability problems). My company isn't even considering switching to it for another 18 months; the first thing we do with a new machine is reimage it with XP.

It's not bad to have Vista installed, but I'd default to OS X.

Vista may not have reliability (built on the sold NT foundations) and security problems, but its not a Mac. There are too many nice features to discard over vista (system wide spell checking + dictionary + colour palette + font inspector for starters).

I'm reading this thread eagerly awaiting for someone to give some solid and practical examples of how Vista is better than XP. I mean real examples, not theoretical scenarios where Vista promises to be better.
