Intelligence analysts predicted, in secret papers circulated within the government before the Iraq invasion, that al-Qaida would see U.S. military action as an opportunity to increase its operations and that Iran would try to shape a post-Saddam Iraq.

What was that again about how we all saw the same evidence? Why did Bush ignore all of it? And why isn't the MSM reporting more on this? Seems like a big deal to me.

This story was supposedly the most emailed on yahoo news, so I guess it's getting around at least a bit. I agree this is very important, because it offers yet more proof for the obvious: this was an unnecessary war, incompetently planned and executed by an administration that lied about their reasons for the war and lied about how the war was going and how they expected the war to go.

This should be the big political story of the season, if only because the Republican Senate sandbagged this report for as long as they were able. The issues it raises are hardly new, though -- experts outside the government were talking about the significant likelihood of a civil war erupting in Iraq years ago. We discussed this issue quite a bit here.

Edit: one of these discussions.

Reading through some of these old threads can be instructive. Was anyone who pushed for this war right about any of the outcomes?
