I will not install until i have time to back up 1st. Has anyone successfully done this with an IBM DeskStar drive?

From the software update panel...

The Hard Disk Update improves the longevity of some hard drives. Your drives may or may not need to have firmware updated; installing and running this update will tell you if updating is required.

IMPORTANT -- It is strongly recommended that you back up the data on your hard drives to an external drive or removable media before running this update. If an error should occur during the update process, your hard drives may become unusable. In that case, all data on the drives could be lost.

Note: When installation is complete, Hard Drive Update 1 should launch automatically. If the update does not launch automatically, please launch it manually:

/Applications/Utilities/Hard Drive Update 1

this update doesn't do anything unless your computer needs it.
It tells you if you do, when you restart.

It's only for certain PowerMacs, so that's why not all of us are seeing this in our Software Updates.

I have a 40gb DeskStar in my Power Mac Quicksilver, and this update said my drive had to be updated (I guess that answers the question of which drives need it, IBM DeskStars).

So I backed up my most important data to my 2nd 40gb Hard Drive (a Western Digital which didn't need to be updated) and ran the install. The system rebooted, gave me a firmware progress bar, and then shut down for 10 seconds (wait it out!) and then the machine started back up just fine.

No problems here.

it was just a harddrive firmware update for powermacs that is meant to help the drives from killing themselves.

This is for a number of G4 desktops that contain IBM drives only, see my previous post "OS9 Hard Drive Update Warning" (something along those lines)

Be careful...lots of reports of lost data/corrupt hard-drives after using this.

AppleMatt i heard some people say they had this update on their maxtor HDDs too.
