View Full Version : Kettle Chips-A slice of heaven or taste of hell?

So, it being almost 1am in California, my mind wandered to the vagaries of those new salt and pepper kettle chips. Anyone ever eaten a better chip? Crisp, crinkle cut, seasoned just so. Clearly, it is time to shut down for the night...

Based on price and quality control, I would even venture to call them the Mac Pro's of the chip world. It might be a stretch, but you can eat the peripherals.

I actually really dislike kettle chips. :o I know I'm likely in the minority... but I don't like how thick they are. How darned hard and crunchy they are. I find eating them to be jarring. And it hurts my jaws. And the chip fragments always seem to poke my gums and the roof of my mouth. Ouchie.

I'll bet you help little old ladies across the street, volunteer at the soup kitchen, and use a hand crank generator to power your puter when you post on MR. Damn do-gooder...

Besides, my kettle chips say "No Trans Fat", in big letters, so they must be good for me. And if you throw a bag into a high school classroom, all the free radicals will adhere to the bag, so there has to be some health benefit.

Wish they'd make them just a touch less greasey though. :(

Anyone ever tried making their own crisps?

Don't like kettle chips either. They're cloying and always seem to turn up when I go out to parties.

Tyrrells in the UK are quite nice crisps, if a bit spendy. There's a interesting story there.

Mr Tyrell used to be a small spud farmer, then Tescos wiped him out by importing potatos. So he became a crisp maker, and was very good at it. Tescos want to stock his crisps. He refuses and tells them to piss off. They buy his crisps on the grey market behind his back. He takes them to court, and wins, yaay!

Kettle are the best crisps I have tasted.

Don't normally eat that many.

The "undressed (http://www.kettlefoods.co.uk/site/WebSiteProducts.do?id=501.54.613&range=1&detailId=2004)" or plain ones are my favourites.

Not a huge fan. They're either too greasy and a bit soggy to bite down on, or they're like freakin' jawbreakers and my ears ring after hearing the crunch inside my mouth. Then little shards poke around and hurt my gums, especially the little bit of gum right behind my two front teeth.

What I like, if you can find 'em, are "Stacey's" brand "naked" pita chips. In hummous, mmmmm. Although, same problem with deafening crunch sounds.

quite possibly the first time in history that Kettle Chips and cloying taste have been discussed in the same sentence. And there it is a couple posts down. Personally, I think Red Tomato was simply trying to jump on the cloying bandwagon...

Just leave them in your mouth for a bit a let the saliva do its job.

Enquiring minds need to know... it's not as crinkle-cut and dried as it seems. I mean, it's a reconstituted potato snack which doesn't necessarily rule it out. I suggest the 'can' argument is a red herring. ;)

Okay, here's a weird question. When I have the regular kind of potato chips (no flavor), I sometimes dip them in ketchup. I love ketchup, and many people put it on their french fries. And french fries are basically like very thick and softer potato chips... right? So, does anyone else do that?

Gravy on fries as in "poutine?" Yup. Love the stuff. It's a special kind of gravy, often made especially for poutine. It varies from place to place. "Hot Chicken" sandwich sauce, if you have that in UK is the closest relative to poutine sauce. Want me to FedEx you a can? :D For the cheeze curds you're on your own. It has to be fresh of the day.

The UK has some weird crisp flavours too. Pickled onion, worcestershire sauce, prawn cocktail... and of course there is all the 'gourmet' ones as well. Had some nice ones over Xmas: cranberry and stilton.

Definitely more classy than some of the flavors I've seen out here.:

- Hot Dog
- Poutine
- Ketchup
- Pizza
- BBQ Ribs
- Buffalo Wings
- Curry
- Bacon
- Dill pickle
- All Dressed
- Au Grattin
- Sour Cream & Onion

I have yet to visit UK. Way overdue. I'll try to make a stop by the end of the decade. should be an interesting culinery experience. yum.

How, pray tell, do you get a shipment every month (and where do you live? just the address and delivery date will suffice)? Is there a chip of the month club that no one is advertising. Do you get a free chip bowl with the chip of the month club? Will they call you and offer you 2 free bowls if you agree not to reduce your shipments or cancel the service? Fat is not the real evil; simple carbohydrates are. And of course trans fat is the ultimate devil, but I don't consider that a 'fat' - it's a toxin.

Fats can be very healthy and are filling and satisfying preventing bingeing on other less nutritious foods.

The school playground is a complex sociological microcosm. Dare to try to understand it at you're own risk.

I don't think it was because they eat those crisps that they were bullied, but the type of child that got bullied used to bring those crisps into school. I always played it safe with a packed of Walkers Ready Salted.
