The only one I know of for OS X is PCSX. The website seems to be down right now, and honestly the emulator wasn't perfect.

On OS 9 there was Virtual Game Station, which was very good in its time. But won't run in Classic.

I'm sure there are more options on the XP side of things.

Actually looks like it was just updated in April

PCSX!!! it has improved since it's first releases even though it is still not perfect.
if you look you can find the universal version (i did ;) )
it took me a bit of smart use to get proficient with terms such as ROM/disk image/BIOS/.BIN/.CUE/etc. but once you get the hang of it you'll love it.
if you need help with anything PSX-emulator related just ask :)

I've only switched to OSX in the past year and have recently felt the urge to play Final Fantasy 8 again. I think it was PCSX i used to use in windows and it worked flawlessly back then, so i wanted to try the mac port of this. It installs ok but i didn't see any option to load a bin file, only for a cd. I seem to lack the "smart use" penter spoke of, any suggestions?

I've not used PCSX, but I have Connectix Virtual Game Station, which was phenominal. Course, I can't get it to work, now, as all my Macs don't have classic, anymore, but it's still a nigh timeless software.

i agree CVGS (virtual Game Station) is superb, if you can get a hold of it. It wont run on OSX (even under classic) or Win XP, its something to do with the way VGS handles the Disc drive, needs to be Win 98, 95, or Mac OS 8.5-9.2.2, however if you have parallels ect. and an old Win 98 CD lying arround, you can get around it that way, or at least it worked on my CD imac 20". I also have a 400MHz iMac DV G3 in my office at work full of abandonware and VGS runs great on that

Anyone got any ideas on a Leopard compatible emulator? I've got my pristine FFVII discs waiting to be played over one more time...

Not to rain on anyone's parade. I'm a long time videogame collector.

We can talk about "emulators" for abandoned hardware like the Colecovision, but stuff that is still owned by someone like Intellivision, or stuff that the original company still owns (Sega Dreamcast), emulates (Sony emulates PS1 in their PS2 and PS3), sells emulated classic games (classic games for Wii) - dangerous to talk about...

It's more fun to use the original hardware anyways. Buy one used and save it from the landfill...

You're not suposed to bu using .bin files (unless acquired froma CD-ROM that you OWN), but here you go (Just in case you really did rip it from a CD-ROM that you own):
You have to use Toast to mount the .bin file, if I recall correctly.
If that doesn't work, then change the extension to .iso and mount it with Toast.
Once mounted, under PCSX click File > Run

Best Site to download most ps1 games is http://romhustler.net/roms/psx and the best site for Windows emulators, and some craooy osx emulators is http://www.emulator-zone.com/ and in my opinion there are no good ps1 emulators for mac so I suggest is to download crossover so you can open windows applications in mac and use pSX 1.13

You mean you want to pirate a game and play it?

Thanks for all the helpful posts, but when I try to play the game (yes, it is a disc), I get a "Capcom" intro screen and then there's just a blank screen. Anyone know what the problem is or could it just be this particular game?

No idea.. But as others mentioned the ps2 and ps3 have full backwards compatibility with ps1 games.. Seems crazy not to just get one of the consoles (unless you want to pirate the games) a ps2 or ps1 isn't going to cost much either.

Ps1 emulation in windows was perfect last time I tried it though.. Never tried in osX.

I think the main reason in my case that I used VGS for was that I had spare time riding the bus to and from college and after that, work. It was a way to play the games on the bus before the PSP came along. And you could swap between it and work as needed. It was fairly convenient with a laptop.

PS2 is about 92%, but PS3 is only the first models and it's about 60%.

In my experience, the best PS1 emulator has always been EPSXE. It has many available plugins and its compatible with almost all PS1 games.

Many options of loading a game are included, for example – ISO, CD, IMG, ect. The only downside is that this emulator is completely Windows based. A Mac version is not available.

Don’t let that stop you though. You can run the program completely through Wine. I was able to get it up and running on my OSX side and it runs flawless – just like Windows. I am thinking about creating a youtube video that explains this process. Let me know if you are interested.

Bottom line though is that it’s definitely possible to use a great emulator through OSX.

I just downloaded PCSX Reloaded, installed the BIOS, blew the dust off my copy of Gran Turismo 2, and it worked like a charm on my old 1.5GHz Core Solo Mini. It couldn't have been easier. I didn't even need to run the Logitech gamepad through USB Overdrive. :):D:):D:apple::apple::apple:

I didn't think that was possible on the newer PS3's. The first and second gen did.

What controller does anyone recommend for my mac, in regards to playing mame, nes, and ps1?
