Check ebay, you can typically get it for a substantial savings.

if you can't do this, apple has good education discounts on applecare if you attend/work at a school.

well Apple and the retailers just sell you a box. Inside is the code and all you need to sign up for Applecare. All you need is this box, and it's perfectly fine to sell them on ebay.
