it is not the end of my life, but it is a little annoying to have to select the checkbox every time I want to delete a single PM message in a window and then have to go and click the delete button below the checked box. The button seems like it should do the trick just fine on its own. I understand the utility of this option for multiple message deletion, but when it is a single message in its own window it seems a bit redundant.

I think its purpose is to confirm the deletion, so you don't click the Delete this Message button accidentally. That obviates the need for one of those "Are you sure you want to delete?" confirmation pop-ups.

The best way to provide convenient deletion while helping people who delete messages accidentally would be to have an Undo feature you could use after the fact. And, as long as I'm wishing, make it multiple-undo capable.
