View Full Version : MacBook Pro Tomorrow (June 5, 2007) - Some Specs?
MacRumors

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com)
Based on all rumblings, we are very confident that MacBook Pros will be arriving in the morning (Tues, June 5th)... but the exact specs of the new laptops are uncertain.
However, piecing together various reports, here are the possible specs for (some) of the new MacBook Pros.
- 2.2GHz, 4mb shared L2 cache, 2GB of 667mhz ram, 120gb, GeForce 8600M GT 128mb
- 2.4GHz, 4mb shared L2 cache, 2GB of 667mhz ram, 160gb, GeForce 8600M GT 256mb
Prices range from $2000 for the 15" low end up to $3050 for the "ultimate" 17" model, which may be a retail store specific configuration. Apple's Back to School promotion is also expected kick off in the morning and offer up a 4GB iPod Nano (or $199 discount on other iPod) with Mac purchase. The iPhone appears to be excluded from this discount.
Unfortunately, more details aren't available. While parts of this report seem to be corroborated, these specs should be taken with a grain of salt.

The shipping time on MBP's in Denmark sweden and norway have grown, not an exact indication, but could mean apple is running out of stock. Wait time is 3-5 days now instead of 24 hours. (Though Sweden DOES have the baseline MBP shipping within 24 hours)

The CPU clock speeds are insignificantly different. The included RAM is doubled to 2GB at about the same price as the old model so that's nice.
The only real different, based on this article is the GPU. Is that really worth the trouble?

Look around. Where exactly do you see 800MHz DDR2 ram? =p
It's not for sale to the public at all right now. No other computer manufacturers are including 800MHz ram in their Santa Rosa laptops either.
No Santa Rosa widespread = no reason for RAM manufacturers to make 800MHz so-dimms. Hence the chipset must be widespread before the RAM is made available for it.

Well, I honestly am not too worried about what the update includes. I have been waiting for this update all year. I am going to be purchasing the upper-end 15" model tomorrow morning right after the Apple Store opens back up.
I will be somewhat disappointed if these specs are true, it seems like they would increase the RAM by at least 512MB for the upper-end 15" to set it apart from the lower-end 15" MBP. However, like I said, as long as they update them, I am buying one tomorrow!

The CPU clock speeds are insignificantly different.
The Fastest Chips out right now are the 2.4Ghz Meroms w/ 800MHz FSB.
The Santa Rosa Platform uses a 800MHz FSB however still utilizes 667MHz DDR-2 Ram in Dual Channel Mode, vice Interleaving on the Napa Platform. Also 4GB is the Maximum Ram on this chipset.
The Santa Rosa Chipset Intel 965GM has a significantly faster and lower latency memory controller, more flexible PCI-Express, and newer Intel Controller Hub for Storage.
I feel that if these specs as originally posted are true, this will be a significant upgrade.

<rant> to me it seems like they're skimping. they could have gone with an 800Mhz FSB no sweat. Also, i expect to see LED backlit displays otherwise they are really not living up to the competition as seen on Page 1 with the Dell machine.
Maybe they're saving their sparkles and surprises for an ultraportable at WWDC? or something like it? would make sense to keep some base hardware the same to shift a few in the back to school season.

I thought this was interesting from the Wikipedia link:
Intel will also implement Dynamic Acceleration Technology with the Santa Rosa platform. This technology allows single threaded applications to execute faster. When a single threaded application is running the CPU can turn off one of the CPU cores and overclock the active core. In this way the CPU maintains the same Thermal Profile as it would when both cores are active. Many expect Santa Rosa to perform well as a mobile gaming platform due to its ability to switch between single threaded and multithreaded tasks.

Thats fine but haven't all the rumors suggested that the new LED displays will only be 13" or 15" maximum?
Then the 17" MBP doesnt get the screen simple. The 13 or 15" MBP will have the screen as an option

I really dont know whats so hard to understand about this.
Just because the FSB is 800MHz, dosent meant the Ram has to be the same speed.
DDR2 667MHz SO-DIMM Modules are in mass production, and are very cheap to produce compared to DDR2 800MHz SO-DIMM modules which are scarce, produce more heat, and are more expensive.
DDR2 667 is the standard for laptops, its not a big deal. The Cooler running modules, and less $ will bennifit you more.

It will work but more than likely the ram will underclock to 667 since santa rosa only supports 667.

I can't really see them releasing some MBP's with SR and some without. I think they'll all be SR, and the 15's will get LED.
Well the 15" MBP was released first was it not (when transitioning to Intel), so maybe it'll be the guinea pig again.
But it HAS to differ a lot more from the Macbook then it currently does:P
Not necessarily, remember the Santa Rosa chipset will be re-used with the next shrink of processors, and they should bring much bigger improvements, so perhaps this upgrade will suck a bit, but the one after will be really good.
(Referring to the 45nm shrink)
Also 4GB is the Maximum Ram on this chipset.
Thank you, was wondering what the maximum was... not that 2x 2GB chips is affordable in any case.
The MacBook Pro will also have a new power adapter.
What the hell? Where did that come from? .
He came back from the future to tell us about the MBP, but got to the wrong point in time, he should of gone back another year and a few months...
I was expecting Leopard to come out with it too?
It was delayed until October... you can have it though, it'll just be buggy and you might lose all your data, is that alright with you ?

I am so patiently waiting to see how the new mcbook pro's turn out.
But I have a feeling apple will not look the other way and just release
something very un-spectacular. But their marketing team and the hype behind apple products will intially make it out to be this awesome upgrade
thus blinding us into a pathetic overall upgrade.
By the way the new dell tops any current apple offering in the notebook genre.
Hopefully apple takes note of it and do something amazing with their so desperetaly needed upgraded mobile stations.

The 965 chipset used in SR platform also produce more heat, use more power. Intel could have released 667FSB Merom at 2.5GHz (166.66 x 15) and 2.66GHz (166.66 x 16) to keep memory at preferred ratio with DDR2-667 (1:2) rather than (3:5) 800FSB:667MHz combo on SR. Intel will shift to 45nm 800FSB/1066FSB Penryn with DDR3-800/DDR3-1066 (1.5v) in Q1 2008. It really makes SR upgrade less appealing other than the rumored LED screen or 13.3" MBP.

If my keyboard "was delayed" a few days for that, to be honest I'd be pretty pissed off.
$19 for overnight shipping was worth it vice driving an hour and forty minutes to the closest Apple store from the gas savings alone. I could handle a day or two of decreased production, but a big delay would be tough.

This will annoy anyone using Windows on their Mac, but the new MacBook Pro will guarantee to overheat and burn a hole not only in your bank account but also your lap :p.
On a more serious note...
Since so many resources were poured into the iPhone we won't get Santa Rosa or Robson. Hell we'll be lucky to get a higher capicity 7200 RPM Hard Drive as an option on the 17" at this point.
The real update on the MacBook Pros: Slightly faster CPUs, ability to add more than 3 gigs of memory, slightly bigger hard drives, and a wait time of another 6+ months for Santa Rosa, Robson, OLEDs and HD.

Some people here need to do their research before going out and posting their predictions.
They can't bump the processor speeds without switching to the Crestline chipset (Santa Rosa).
There is no 2.6GHz Merom yet.
This IS a significant update, it's not just going to be a "cpu speed bump".
This update is going to bring a full 64-bit chipset and processor, 4GB of RAM, and a faster FSB.
One of the biggest features of Santa Rosa that is overlooked is the fact that if you're running a single cpu-intensive singlethreaded app, the new Crestline (965) chipset can shut down the second core and clock up the first one (for example, the 2.4GHz can clock the single core up to 3.4GHz).
It seems like some people just don't know what they're talking about.

Other OEM manufactures are not releasing it probably due to heat on existing thin laptop enclosure. We'll see if Apple will break the norm tomorrow!
The current OSX doesn't support switching off one core automatically until either 10.4.10 or 10.5. People have not realized Apple is trying to hold off for better upgrade upon Leopard release. It's not necessary the best interest on Apple's part to follow everything that Intel releases (e.g. turbo memory). From historic record, Intel has released a lot of insignificant incremental updates that sometime turn out to be worse than the previous generation. Consider the TDP!!!
The only significant upgrade on the new MBP is if Apple includes the new LED screen standard on SR, a 13.3" SR MBP, or higher end GPU (65nm), anything else is insignificant just as CD to C2D. Intel can say what ever about 965 chipset, it's just less appealing than Intel P35 mobile chipset (Montevina Platform) that is due around Q1 2008.

You're reading it wrong. The T7700 is 2.4GHz clockspeed, and with IDA it can go up to 2.6 (I said 3.4 which I was wrong about).
Additionally, I believe that the IDA is mostly hardware based, so it doesn't need os x drivers to work. I could be wrong though.

Yes, IDA is hardware based, but the core idling must also be handled by OS.

I tell you i expect more that this. Apple seems to be getting behind the times and doing it at a higher cost. For the money we spend our specs should trump anyone else, but when a $1500 dell comes close to the $2700 Mac in specs, I see something wrong with that.

with the exception of the video card there isn't really anything apple can do to speed this up. they are using the fastest memory the chipset supports, including 2 GB of ram, fastest processor intel makes etc.

don't get the complaints about the processor speed - 2.4 ghz - isn't that the fastest Intel has to date? And realisticly - is it relevant to release for example "flash-disks"? LED will probably arrive sometime autumn 2007 - no?
what I hope and believe is that by making this "spec-bump" (instead of speed-bump) Apple is making way for new stuff at WWDC. What might have the biggest impact? - a totally new iMac with high-end specification...please :p

No LED LCD? Nvidia 8600M GT is a 43W 80nm chip, hot and power hunger! ATI X1600 only consumes 17W.
It's actually 70MHz to be exact! 2330MHz (667 Merom) vs 2400MHz (800 Merom)! No wonder Apple doesn't care to release SR platform ahead of other manufactures.

Seriously, 2.4 is fine and the graphics is fine, but to keep essentially the same design since 1GHz 17" in 2003 is a bit lame for a company that prides itself on innovation. I'm typing this on a 17" MBP so no hate.

If they redesign the case to include a user replaceable hard drive, then this upgrade will be pretty much perfect.
Okay, I'm being kind of a jerk in these responses, but geez, they're so random. Where were you guys when the Macbook got it's "upgrade"? Or were you defending THAT while slamming an actual upgrade?
The nvidia chips are significantly faster.
Should be close to double the performance of the x1600.
The 7600GT approached twice as fast as the dirt-slow x1600. The 8600 is in a whole different league. It's not the most powerful mobile GPU out there in raw power (that would be the 7950GTX), but it's close to as good as it gets for a laptop, and of course it supports Direct X 10 level features.
What I don't get though, is why they don't use 800Mhz RAM? Is it just too expensive? (Apple never seemed to have a problem with that in the past ;) )
667MHz RAM *is* the fast stuff. Many *DESKTOPS* ship with slower.
I double-checked the specs of the current models and this is not really an update.
Then you need to triple check the specs, when you'll realize it's about as big of an upgrade as Apple could have possibly done. It's the exact opposite of the Macbook "upgrade".
The only real different, based on this article is the GPU. Is that really worth the trouble?
In the first place, it's a whole new platform. Faster CPUs, new chipset, 64-bit support, etc. But even if it was just a new GPU-we're going from LAST YEAR'S low end GPU to THIS YEAR'S mid range model. So yes, that's worth it.
...Also that while power consumption was down significantly from previous generations, performance gains where minimal.
Wrong. Performance on the 8600GT wastes the 7600GT across the board, and adds DX 10 class support on top of that. The 7600GT already wasted the Radeon x1600...so yes, this is a huge GPU upgrade.
I was wondering this myself... I don't know much about which GPU's are what. How good are these GPU's, anyone know?
Close to as good as it gets for a notebook. Only the 7950GTX flat out beats it (but lacks DX 10). The 7900GS probably beats it in some things, loses in others, but is also a DX 10 part, so overall the 8600GT is arguably a better choice.
Mac's are usually pricey, are we getting a good deal here? I would expect a price drop. I was expecting Leopard to come out with it too?
Why would you expect a price drop OR leopard? Leopard is October. And prices have been consistent for several generations of systems.
I am so patiently waiting to see how the new mcbook pro's turn out.
But I have a feeling apple will not look the other way and just release
something very un-spectacular.
Your feeling goes against every rumor that's been presented for months now.
...By the way the new dell tops any current apple offering in the notebook genre.
No it doesn't. It's better than the Macbook, if that's the form factor you want. Dell's year old e1705 and M1710, and apparently all the Macbook Pros destroy Dell's new 13" if you care about performance or screen real estate.
Bus and RAM speeds haven't been kept synchronous for years. And I'd rather have the better performance that comes from the faster bus, than an arbitrary ratio between the two.
It's too quiet in here.. Aren't there gonna be people posting in here ..."Oh my God... This is the best they come up with?! THAT'S IT, I'm waiting for Penryn."
If the upgrades are as good as the rumors say, than only idiots will be saying thigns like that. The Macbook got tons of negative posts because it was a pathetic 160MHz speed bump, with nothing else to distinguish it.
Since so many resources were poured into the iPhone we won't get Santa Rosa or Robson.
All the rumors say we are getting the new chipsets and CPU.
The real update on the MacBook Pros: Slightly faster CPUs, ability to add more than 3 gigs of memory, slightly bigger hard drives, and a wait time of another 6+ months for Santa Rosa, Robson, OLEDs and HD.
No, Santa Rosa (or at least the important pieces of it) is here TODAY, if every rumor, and common sense, is correct.
And who on EARTH would want an OLED display!?! That's nuts. Those things are cheap garbage. Using them on a $40 MP3 player might make sense. Using them on a $2000-3000 laptop? I don't think so!
...Intel can say what ever about 965 chipset, it's just less appealing than Intel P35 mobile chipset (Montevina Platform) that is due around Q1 2008.
Umm...yeah. A chipset launching in Q1 of 2008 is better than one launched Q2 2007...am I supposed to be shocked by that?
uh oh, smells like another macbook-esque update on the wind. That would be pretty disappointing.
And again I have to say...huh? If this upgrade is true, then it encompasses basically everything we've wanted (except possibly for a case design that allows user replaceable hard drives).
They almost have to do more than that to keep up the gap between the pro and consumer models don't you think? It seems to me that the macbook would really cannibalize the MBP sales if they don't...
Huh? If the rumored specs are true, the gap just got a lot wider between the Macbook and Pro.
7 minutes till we find out!
No, try tomorrow morning. They don't update at midnight.
No LED LCD? Nvidia 8600M GT is a 43W 80nm chip, hot and power hunger! ATI X1600 only consumes 17W.
Even if that's true...who cares!?! On a power/performance basis, the 8600GT destoys the x1600. Plus, can it be underclocked when on battery? Or will a possible LED backlit screen make up the difference in power?
It's actually 70MHz to be exact! 2330MHz (667 Merom) vs 2400MHz (800 Merom)! No wonder Apple doesn't care to release SR platform ahead of other manufactures.
You're totally ignoring the almost 20% fast FSB! Not to mention the better chipset, etc.

Sure gains are minimal, but otherwise all they did was marginally bump the CPU core and a decent FSB and GPU bump. Case, and features for the most part have been same since the first MBP at the start of 06. The CPU is plenty fast no doubt, but some spark of inspiration would be nice.

That could be one less fan here or there or lighter heatsink even. The rest of the case dimensions are the same, so I doubt a redesign. Best case I hope it is LED backlights and no invertor board.

Again though, this is just a rumor. We don't know until we see it tomorrow.I don't see how AI's specs preclude LED back-lighting. Steve Jobs is on the record as saying Apple will introduce LED-based laptops THIS YEAR. There's very good chance the MBPs may not get updated again until MWSF2008. This HAS to be when Apple delivers on LED-based LCDs.
And think about it, Santa Rosa the platform is not a huge selling point for Apple. It's very hard to market 800 FSB and IDP sound sexy. They have to have some other talking points, like magnetic latch, longer battery life, better (LED) screens, and Turbo Memory.

Unless you're looking for quad-puting..
Of course you are so right.
But still If no Santa Rosa platform is used (with the robson tech.)in the next upgrade, nevermind the LED screens, I will be totally let down by Apple this year.
Could it be that, we'll only start to see anything realy new, computerwise, after the introduction of Leopard? Could it be that 10.4 isn't/wasn't built with those technologies (Robson, Bluray,HD DVD)in mind? And that it simply isn't possible or that it is possible, but wouldn't give the performance boost Apple would like to see.

Hey, they could always stick a 15-inch LED backlight attached to a 17-inch display and do some tricks with mirrors...no?....
...I think I'm reaching here... :D

DUDE!
You guys know how Amazon was saying "a newer version may be available" of the MBP? Well, now they're offering a $150 rebate on the high-end 15" and 17" MBP's!
Giggity.

AppleInsider says 120GB HD...that's less than the standard blackbook
i don't know if anything is coming out tomorrow morning, or if it will be WWDC, but one thing I know for sure is there is no way they're releasing a smaller harddrive in the pro that the blackbook.
hence, i declare BS on AppleInsider's partTypically, the low-end MBP has had the same HDD specs as the Blackbook. So expect, at minimum, 160GB HD, 8x Superdrive, and 1GB RAM (but most likely 2GB).

I don't see this happening.
120 GB HDD when the BlackBook has 160? Rrrrrrright.
Only a .04 GHz upgrade? No Santa Rosa on the base?
I guess LED screens could make up for a new, non-Santa Rosa low-end MBP. But the hard drive can't be below the BlackBook.
im a silly pill up till 2:44 - more as i was addicted to my rather new futuresonics atrio m5 paired with my cowon d2 (grin) and some william gibson catch up, but 2.2 ghz processor only works on a chipset that supports 800 mhz. 2.2 is santa rosa. 2.4 is santa rosa. i know someone will have said all this before, but i state again, it is 2:45. apple are in command to dash our hopes or not; either way, i am computer-less and will be purchasing one within the week it comes out (just after barefeats and everyone reviews it for kinks) - cheers
Bus and RAM speeds haven't been kept synchronous for years. And I'd rather have the better performance that comes from the faster bus, than an arbitrary ratio between the two.The fact is the less asynchronous the better for performance. 1:2 ratio (166FSB:333MHz) is actually a much better ratio than 3:5 ratio (200FSB:333MHz). In terms of performance comparison, 667FSB processor with 667MHz memory actually perform better than 800FSB processor with 667MHz!
Even if that's true...who cares!?! On a power/performance basis, the 8600GT destoys the x1600. Plus, can it be underclocked when on battery? Or will a possible LED backlit screen make up the difference in power? Many people will care about LED backlit as it is the next trend for new LCD standard due to power difference. 8600GT is no doubt a much powerful GPU, but not the most suitable mobile GPU until 65nm version. With high TDP for 8600GT, one would not expect a cool laptop that can last more than 3 hours of battery life.
You're totally ignoring the almost 20% fast FSB! Not to mention the better chipset, etc.20% faster FSB doesn't translate to 20% performance improvement, especially when we are talking about 2.33GHz/667FSB vs 2.40GHz/800FSB (same pipeline, cache size, microachitecture), we are really looking at less than 4% improvement in Sis Sandra benchmark or less than 2% improvement in real world. I'd not call 965 better chipset (at least on the mobile platform), just a newer chipset with higher TDP which produces more heat and consumes more power than 945 chipset.

appleinsider's claimed specs really kinda stink. I mean I was fine with minor changes and improvements, but these would be really really minor. Here's hoping AI is wrong, as it often is, and that we see LED and SR in about 6 hours.

Many expect Santa Rosa to perform well as a mobile gaming platform due to its ability to switch between single threaded and multithreaded tasks (Wikipedia).
Well that sounds great, but the real news is the LED backlit displays (if true). That means the MBP's display will be perfect for working with graphics - the thing that only the best CRT displays does today. The colorspectrum is way better then with the fluorescent display in the current line - and the backlighting is much more even (it actually is even).
This is huge guys and girls. LED is what should get people out of their chairs, not a minor CPU update.

AI isn't saying there won't be LED. AI is saying that there will be SR (hence the 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz configurations).

ohhh, maybe I read their post that explicitly said TFT display's wrong.
Directly from AI:
• 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor; 4MB shared level 2 cache
• 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)
• 120GB 5400-rpm hard drive
• 15.4-inch (diagonal) TFT widescreen display; 1440 by 900 pixels
• NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 128MB of GDDR3 SDRAM
• Built-in iSight video camera
• Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
(etc. (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/06/04/apple_set_to_unveil_macbook_pro_overhaul_back_to_school_promo.html))

If there is no LED the upgrade will suck, and I'm actually afraid it will
If they release the new MBP today Apple will still have time to release another MBP with LED display later in 2007 (say nov/dec 2007) - as stated in Steves environmental letter to Greenpeace about LED displays coming 2007.
That sucks!!!!!

Well how about you get your facts correct and worry less about using most likely uninformed comments from other posts as facts.
Also, perhaps you would explain why an increase in processor speed would be conclusive of SR being integrated into the MBP update?

TFT = Thin-Film Transistor.
That's not backlight.
Currently the MBP screens use cold cathode fluorescent backlights.
LED backlights are different.
All flat panels use TFT.

Thought you'd never ask! ;) The current processor/chipset doesn't support speeds faster than 2.33GHz. So the fact that the purported update includes 2.4GHz CPU's means that the CPU/chipset is Santa Rosa, because that is the only possible way to get the clock speed that fast.
(And I don't know much about the terminology of LCD screens, but read scrambledwonder's post above me explaining that TFT isn't referring to the backlighting.)

Yeah mee too, if it's really 667 Mhz FSB then that means no Santa Rosa :(
Well we'll see in the morning!
What makes you think that it does not have 800Mhz bus? Because the RAM is clocked at 667Mhz? What does the speed of the RAM have to do with the speed of the front-side bus? Answer: just about nothing.

Hmm, the more I look at the AI specs the more I'm convinced they are real. They seem plausible, and much up to par with the minor update the MB got last week. As I said earlier, the release of a new MBP today will give Apple the room to release a LED version in late 2007 (thats 6 months from now) - that coincides with Steve Jobs saying that we will see LED displays from Apple in 2007, and Apples normal update cycle of the MBP.
This kinda sucks - I can't wait another 6 months for the LED MBP - but that is actually the only thing I'm interested in. The speed bumps are not a big deal to me. Whether I'm able to rip a cd in 20 or 18 secs really isn't worth mentioning :)

They aren't exact, because the new 17" (at least) DOES have an LED backlit screen with a 1900x1200 resolution standard. That's directly from internal. If you don't want to trust me as a source, then check apple.com for yourself tomorrow morning.

That seems dubious since 15" is the only payable LED backlit display. I didn't see your post earlier about the 17" - if you are right that will be awsome though! Perhaps LED displays will be a BTO option as Dell does it. Just like now where you can choose between glossy or matte display.
