It is the 15 inch Glossy - Screen looks awesome.

2.4
2 GIG RAM, 2 1 GIG Sticks (That sucks, If I wanted to add later).

Here is a shot from system profiler

It seems just like my old one on the outside. No differences whatsoever.

It is what is on the inside that counts!

The Hard drive is 160GB Fujitsu and the SuperDrive says ATA Bus:

MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857E:

Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857E
Revision: ZA0E
Serial Number:
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Low Power Polling: Yes

If you would like to help a lot of people out, could you print out a protractor and measure the opening angle of the display?

Many user, including myself, didn't like 5-10 degree change from the Powerbooks to the MacbookPros.

You have to pay tax at the store, right? Thats like an extra 150$+ here in michigan for the high end one. You dont have to pay online, or do you? I'll order online if i'm saving that much.

It depends whether Apple has a physical presence (i.e. Apple store) in your state.

The Apple store in San Francisco had a bunch (maybe 50, at least), when I picked mine up this morning. I've heard other stores were well stocked as well.

The five Apple people I talked to on the phone. I had a hard time believing it, so I called four times, then the guy who I placed my order with told me that if I went to a store I would have to wait at least a week. Maybe they were thinking I meant stores like CompUSA or something when I said Apple retail store....Whatever. Very nice machine!

My protractor's in the shop, but I can tell you that my new LED display MBP doesn't even open as far as my one-year-old MBP 2.16. It's not a personal tragedy, but I do miss the open-wide ability of earlier models.

Darn, kind of disappointing that Apple's own operation is spreading misinformation. I hate to bust out the conspiracy theory, but maybe they were discouraging you from shopping the 'old-fashioned' way to possibly squeeze a commission out of you through a phone sale?

As I mentioned, it could just be that I've flexed the older hinge enough to 'stretch' it a bit, but here are the two screens next to each other at maximum deflection.

Sheesh, remind me to clean up the area a bit next time I post a picture. Embarrassing. :o

Well, i have 2 apple stores about 45 minutes away each.

I dont see why it matters? Does the physical store charge tax? And does the online store not charge tax?

Jun 5, 2007, 03:38 PM
I don't have one. Nor a Macbook even, but when tested at the store, the Macbook opened more. Going on memory, your older version in the pic does seem to open more and perhaps there was some stretch? If these things 'do' give a bit, I'd really like to know that. If not - the pic is scarey and Apple needs to understand not everyone uses these things on a standard desk with chair situation.

Does the old one's lid feel loose or does it flop a bit? Wish you had a Macbook to compare with. But great picture. Thanks! Maybe I need to hit a store to compare old vs. new side by side as well as the Macbook. Further, I wonder if one could tweek the hinge to allow it to open more?

The online store is free ship but does charge tax. I wish I knew how though. State or by the city you reside in? I want to weigh getting it via Amazon vs. the Apple store with free iPod deal.

To me, the top one looks more like what I have used wiith the old MBPs. The one underneath looks the way I'd like it to be.

I agree. The bottom one actually looks like a Powerbook. Maybe the screen does give over time. When I had a 15" MBP, there was a definite internal artificial block on the screen (as opposed to it hitting the case as some people thought it did).

They do it based on the shipping zipcode you provide. So you pay the sales tax you would pay in your own city.

yeah. that option makes it 4-6 weeks shipping as opposed to the 1-3days on the other models.

That's odd...

I opted for the 160 GB Hard Drive option and my shipping says June 6-8th, delivery anywhere from June 14th-20th.

I'm pumped!

I live in Canada... do you think that's why it's different?

When the store first came back online, adding the 7200rpm 160GB drive to the 17" kept the 1-3 business day shipping time.

This leads me to believe that either these initial orders are going to be delayed, or, more likely, the later 7200rpm orders will ship somewhat earlier than expected. Hopefully the latter, since I actually had one of the earlier orders, but it had to get cancelled and re-entered for reasons beyond my control. :(

Wait a few days so they can have it in stock and order from www.bhphotovideo.com in NY, free shipping and no taxes to Michigan (or any other state).

Or not. I ordered some stuff from them once. It was supposed to ship in 4-8 days or something similar. I had to cancel the order when they still hadn't sent it a month and a half later. Never ordering from them again.

So how hot does the new MBP gets? Can anyone post some temperatures under different work loads?

I have a revision 1 MBP and am tired of having to keep the fans constantly running at 4000rpm, in order to keep it cool enough for my laps, so it would be great if they did some work on that area.

Crossposted....

Here is my guess on the situation. I spent a good portion of yesterday trying to identify the 250GB/4200RPM drive that is being used in the 17" MBP. The only one that I could find was this one:

http://www.fujitsu.com/global/support/computing/storage/hdd/mhdd/mhx2250bt-mhx2300bt.html

Notice that it is a 12.5mm drive. Knowing this, I am assuming that the 17" version of the 160GB/7200RPM drive is also 12.5mm and is therefore more freely available than the 9.5mm version needed for the 15" MBP.

This is only a guess though until I get my MBP and see which HDD is actually in it.

Thanks jellz, I changed the drive to 5400rpm and the ship date is now a much more respectable June 20 (Cupertino is a long way from Singapore, I'm happy with just 2 weeks!).

Cheers
