You can use MacPorts to install Samba3 3.0.20b and then update your port and it will install samba 3.0.25a which is the most recent version as of May 25th.

I rarely use Windows sharing, but it may be helpful to some others.

Well, given that Symantec's business model is heavily dependent on fear mongering, if they call something fairly trivial that means that it doesn't exist.
