nonairport base station and express wds?

my gf's father has a non airport base station, and he is trying to hook up airport expresses around his house.

one is meant just to stream music, the other express is hopefully going to extend his network using wds. is wds possible if the base station isn't an airport apple product?

The Expresses will be able to connect to the wireless network but they won't be able to extend its range.
