Hi,

I use(have always been using macīs) in my work. I work within molecular biology and rarely find a program not encoded for mac.

Most imaging and structure analysis software (imageJ, "O", deconvolution programs etc) work perfectly on a mac. As does the Adobe programs of course. The only SW that is annoyingly not compatible with mac is ZEISS LSM software for microscopy but imageJ can sort of circumwent that obstacle.

What sort of science do you do? Feel free to ask about specific applications you consider running.

ImageJ is great for microscopy analysis. FlowJo is good for flow cytometry, as long as you don't have to pay for it!

Papers (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=276067) is a great program for organising your references.

shwc made a nice list of some cool science apps here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3349176&postcount=38).

I also find some very nice apps on the Apple site (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/math_science/).

Edit: Apple also has this page (http://www.apple.com/science/) to push Macs for scientists

I'm a structural biologist, and OS X has revolutionized the way we work. Whereas we used to use specialized Silicon Graphics workstations to run all of our Unix-based software, we can now run just about all of it directly on our Macs at our desks. And with laptops we can easily take it all with us to work on the go or present data to others.

Astronomy here. The common astro data analysis packages (IRAF, IDL, DS9) work fine on OSX. I also use it for running my own code (C++, Java) and I use Wavemetric's Igor Pro program for graphing and light programming.
