Random question. Is an external DVD+/-RW drive fully supported in 10.4, as in you can do everything you can do with an included drive from Apple? (Watch movies from it, burn to it from included and third party apps, etc.)?

Would ANY drive work?

I'm thinking I could get something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827131037
or even a cheap one

Just randomly thinking maybe I could get the cheapest Macbook and just add an external drive, since I can't really get a MBP, and I don't want to spend much on a MB

You need the OS X drivers for it.

I have an external usb hd kit... it has a ide strip.

using this i've used random no-named cd-rom drives and a memorex dual layer burner. don't be fooled if you plug it in and the drive doesn't show up. it needs media lol.

if it's usb, it will problably work.

Okay, so basically anything should work? That's good.

What about for the built-in Apps? I assume the basic disc burning would work, but what about iDVD? In the past I think it was tied to just a few Apple provided DVD-/+RWs, but my understanding is now it's been opened for everything?
