As the dust settles from today's announcements at WWDC, we take some time to make a few additional notes on some details of Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard."
Where's Screen Sharing?
One feature that was present in previous Leopard builds but is no longer advertised is screen sharing via iChat.
This is would not be the first time a previewed feature of Mac OS X has been axed prior to launch. Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther's" Home On iPod feature was mentioned on Apple's site, but then pulled without explanation (http://www.macrumors.com/2003/10/08/pulled-panther-feature-home-on-ipod/). Currently, all Leopard pages feature a disclaimer stating that "all features referenced in the Mac OS X Leopard website are subject to change."
Performance Optimizations
The addition of the 8-core Mac Pro saw benchmarks that demonstrated diminishing returns (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/04/16/8-core-mac-pro-benchmarks/) with some applications. Barefeats had speculated that this was due to inefficiencies in Tiger's scheduler. It appears that Leopard will be addressing this (http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/technology/multicore.html) with a scheduler further optimized for multi-core systems, as well as built-in support for Message Passing Interface (MPI) 2.0.
In addition to multi-core enhancements, Apple states that other various portions of the OS have been optimized (http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/technology/unix.html) including a self-tuning TCP stack (eliminating the need for specialized tools such as Broadband Tuner (http://www.macrumors.com/2005/11/28/broadband-tuner-1-0-released/)), and a multithreaded 'autofs' filesystem layer.
Apple states that all these technologies are universal, meaning both Intel Mac users and PowerPC users will benefit from the enhancements.

Yeah, but they use some funny math to add up that list of features to 290(ish). I doubt there will be any headline features other than what they announced today.

When do the people at WWDC get their copies of Leopard? I suspect will will get the real story about Leopard about 30 minutes after the first disk is handed out.
What about ZFS? Is it there. Can it be on the boot disk?

Well, those 30 minutes came and went a long time ago. The 10.5 beta copies were available to attendees right after the end of the keynote.

Yeah...if it worked via an iChat connection, then long distance support, tutoring and collaboration seemed possible. If it's limited to local machines in a LAN, it's a lot less useful (for me at least).

I'm glad to see the UI refresh. Ever since OS X came out they've been adding little things here and there until there were several differnce UIs to choose from and it was just starting to look cluttered and stuff. Hopefully with the cleaned up UI, we will see a return to some sort of HIG standards.

I hope it still works as (previously) advertised. It's odd that it is no longer featured on Apple's Leopard iChat (http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/features/ichat.html) pages, as it used to be. The only Leapord feature I was excited enough about to show to other people.

This is the function I'm most excited about for 10.5, undoubtedly. Whether it's in iChat (easiest for Moms) or in the finder (might take a little more effort), it better be there.
Nevertheless, the new .Mac feature discussed today sounds extremely promising... I would love to have access to my ~2TB from anywhere in the world.
...After rereading that, it made me think... Will there be a way to access your home mac via .Mac on any computer? Or does the client computer have to be registered with your account...

I was originally poo pooing on Leopard because of the more in your face features being somewhat yawn inducing. IMHO the under the hood improvements are MUCH more exciting then Stacks, Quick Look, Time Machine, etc. If Apple finally FTFF. . . I'll be happy.
One thing I was hoping for and surprised that they didn't do. Was something a bit more inventive with the dock. Its a waste a space IMHO when not in use. Sure you can hide it but it would be nicer if say (Just off the top of my head.) the finder lays flat but still takes up about 1/4 of an inch of space", and any screen above it has a reflection of the finder along the base of it. So you could still somewhat see it, yet the window is still the main focus until you drag your cursor to the bottom where the finder window not so much pops up but goes from laying flat to upright. (sorry for the run ons.)

Hmmm... I hope there's more to the computer sharing then than what we saw in the Keynote. Otherwise, it seems like the only computers that show up there are ones that A) Are on the local network, or B) Are findable via the .Mac service. So I either can only share desktop between computers at my house, or (like if I want to help my Mother-in-law figure out how to launch Print Shop again) I *must* buy .Mac and share the membership with the person I'm connecting to?

You can download that screenshot as a high-res press image, and there's still plenty of transparency. It's just they're used a much more subtle wallpaper (a color modified version of one that comes with Tiger, I quite like it actually!).
But as inkhead says in that post, if true, you can turn it off.

but what if i want to access a friends work in another place. ALSO, 2 reasons why i think it is STILL in ICHAT
- 1st, i saw the keynote, and saw the screen sharing button on the row where you would see the audio, text, video chat buttons.
- 2nd, steve doesnt have time to mention the 'already-mentioned' things again, because he only has 1.5 hours. Even though he did mention other 'already-mentioned' stuff, they were the main concept of that addition in leopard. :apple:

On the leopard server page it says this about screen sharing (though oddly worded) which leads me to think it's going to be a network only feature.
"iChat Server 2
iChat Server works with iChat AV 4 in Leopard to bring easy-to-use, secure multiuser chat, file transfers, audio and video conferencing, and screen sharing to workgroups, small businesses, and large corporations. iChat Server 2 adds instant messaging federation, allowing users to chat with users on other XMPP instant messaging systems such as Google Talk and vice versa. Features include new automatic buddy list generation options and single sign-on authentication using Kerberos. For extra security, there are new chat log archival facilities and support for secure server-to-server data encryption."

Regarding screen sharing and collaboration there is more info (well some) at
http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/features/finder.html
repeated in its entirety below…
"Closer connections.
With shared computers automatically displayed in the sidebar, it’s far easier to find or access files on any computer in your house, whether Mac or PC. All it takes is a click. But here’s where things get really interesting. By clicking on a connected Mac, you can see and control that computer (if authorized, of course) as if you were sitting in front of it. You can even search all the computers in the house to find what you're looking for."

I'm still waiting for this feature!
Home on iPod (or any firewire drive) is in leopard server. From MacNN which detailed Leopard Server: "...External Accounts to enable Leopard users to store their home directory on an external FireWire or USB portable drive..." That sure sounds like "Home on iPod" to me. I wonder why it would come on a server edition, where the admin would have tons of user data to carry with them instead of a home edition where a consumer could actually bring with them their documents, apps, and settings? My only guess is that it could be considered a form of backup, but now they have time machine for that.

Everybody that found Leopard disappointing kinda makes me wonder what they're expecting. While I've not used it yet, I really like what I'm seeing in how Apple is actually using their head to focus on viewing content and making use of larger displays. It's badly needed.
Sure, some of this can be accomplished with Tiger and some freeware/shareware but it's even better when included as *new* Mac users can more easily benefit. Someone mentioned being more excited about what's under the hood. I'm with ya on that but I don't think these other features are anything to poo-poo.
A long as it's not too buggy, performance is good, and it doesn't rob people blind of memory, I think alot of folks are going to find they like it better than they think they will.
For me memory worries me since I'm stuck with 1.25GB in my 12" PB and Tiger and extra apps are already hurting me there.

It has been said before, but it is amazing how much iTunes influences OS X as a whole. If you want to see the future, just look at the next iTunes. The new Finder is exactly like iTunes 7 in every way. They even added Coverflow to it. Just glad they finally are going to have a consistent UI.

WWDC attendees are all registered Apple Developers, and as such, have signed non disclosure agreements. If any of them post any information that Apple hasn't already publicly released, then they can be sued. As such, you won't see many directly posting about un-revealed features. In a few days, some websites will undoubtedly have all the detailed info you could ever want.

As someone else said, Leopard will run, but it probably won't have all the eye candy on older machines. And Apple still hasn't released a 'minimum requirements' list. So, for example, my early G4 (PCI ATI Rage 128 graphics,) will likely *NOT* support all of the eye candy, just as my 2 year old PC notebook doesn't support all of Vista's eye candy.

I'm not following. Everyone is saying it was moved to the Finder, but I think that is something completely different. What we're seeing in the Finder is just a quicker reference to shared folders / Macs on the network or Macs with your .Mac account online (think of it as a VPN).
This is not the same as bringing up a window and controlling the person's screen while they get to watch. As far as I can tell this feature IS indeed missing. Sad, too.

I think it's probably a mix of both...meaning that you will be able to remote view and control the screen, but only of people in your LAN or whom have .Mac to establish the pseudo-VPN. It's a positive sign that the share-screen icon is still in iChat (as witnessed earlier in the thread), unless that is solely for iChat Theater.

Tiger's release was touted as having over 200 new features, but it turned out that a small fraction of that number qualified as being really new (according to all professional reviewers). I suspect similar hyperbole is involved this time ... it is seemingly an integral part of the swagger that surrounds major promotional events.

I am running Leopard now, and it looks like the "top secret features" were thrown together at the last minute. The drop shadows look like something from stardock.com, and the stacks are just plain annoying if you have more than 15 items your folders. I think the share screen facility in the finder is ace. The only computers I'm likely to want to share screens with are my own, and through .mac's VPN I can set them all up to be an extension of my current machine. That is, let's face it, amazing. It'll be interesting to see if screen sharing also remains in iChat. I'd have thought it would, since it'll be related to iChat theatre. BUT, that still restricts screen sharing to people who can use iChat, not "anyone". We're talking people with bonjour on a local network; .mac addresses; and possibly AIM addresses. While I was disappointed by the announcements yesterday, this is no longer the case. After having watched the keynote and demos, I think this is the most radical change the mac platform has undergone since the introduction of OS X.
The new desktop, Finder and Quicklook, along with the network searches are going to change everything.
Apple is in the process of abandoning the spatial Finder and replacing it with a search based Finder. If you think that Cover Flow/Quick Look is just eye candy, then think again.
In Leopard, you will have frequently accessed files in stacks. If you need anything else, you just spotlight and use coverflow/quicklook to instantly see the right file.
It looks to be very efficient.

There is much more beneath. i.e. I haven't seen it in seeds but in the middle of keynote you can see a glimpse of search in help menu item.
If you look closer at keynote stream you can find some more I'm sure.

I think I'm correct in saying that all the new eye candy is achieved with Core Image.
In that case then my 1 ghz 12" PB will support the eye candy and my 800 mhz iMac wont.
a quick test, the ripples when dropping in a new widget are achieved using Core Image.
I hope I'm partially correct, Apple do have a habit of supporting older machines in my experience.
EDIT
Just read its Core Animation and not Core Image. All the same to me but probably wont be supported on my PB after all.

It has been said before, but it is amazing how much iTunes influences OS X as a whole. If you want to see the future, just look at the next iTunes. The new Finder is exactly like iTunes 7 in every way. They even added Coverflow to it. Just glad they finally are going to have a consistent UI.
I agree with UI, It has to be consistent.
When using iTunes i find some playlists easier to view using the list view and others easier to view using Coverflow.
Some of my current folders in Finder will definitely be viewed in Coverflow and others will be listed or the regular icons with in a window format.
Really looking forward to the new Finder and the added Dock icons are a blessing as I'm currently using folders in the Dock.
Now hurry up and release 10.5 because i need a new Mac and I'm holding back! Apple are you listening?

I think it's enough but there is always some disappointment after a Apple event. It's hard not to get carried away with all the rumors.
Once the dust has settled and 10.5 is released then people will see the bigger picture and wonder how they ever 'got by' with Tiger.

No it will:
"Core Animation takes advantage of the multiple cores in most new Intel-based Mac computers. When developers use the framework for an application, the process runs in its own thread. On a multicore Mac, that means the application runs on one core, and Core Animation runs on the other. Core Animation runs on any Core Image-capable Mac (including most Mac systems shipped in the past two years)."
Any computer that runs Core IMage is good for Core Animation. Of course its optimized with a multi-threaded CPU. But it sitl works. All the technology seems to stem from Core Image, OpenGL, and Core Video. All compatible with your PB.

Now you can save your audio and video chats for posterity with iChat recording.
Before recording starts, iChat notifies your buddies and asks for their permission to record. When you’re done chatting, iChat stores your audio chats as AAC files and video chats as MPEG-4 files so you can play them in iTunes or QuickTime. Share them with colleagues, friends, and family or sync them to your iPod and play on the go.

I agree...all previous releases have actually improved speed each time for my old 933 mhz Quicksilver. So it should run perfectly well.
The pretty stuff, on the other hand, will be extra...with the tiger and dashboard release..only a few newer Macs could do the coreimaging water droplets. I assume this will be the case with some of the eye candy in Leopard.
But probably if you can do the droplet, you will be great on leopard! Either way, leopard will run easily. (all based on assumption and speculation)

at first i must say this was the most boring keynote ever.
i guess im not the only one who hoped for at least some features that
deserved to be kept secret!
the ********** look of an OS changes with EVERY NEW OS so what kind of special feature is that? THE EXPLORER GETS UPDATED WITH EVERY NEW WINVERSION and Microsoft never called it a secret feature because everybody knows it gets revised anyway.
so where are the secret features?
quicklook - a faster preview app? obviously not!
64bit architecture is not what i`d call "feature"
piles/stacks? hmm okay - looks helpful
im hoping for multi-touch features like those seen in the perceptive pixel site
(if you have a touchscreen or some kind of pad of course)
- - -
*whats up with john carmack from id?
he made strange noises when he left the stage (very funny)
(cry-engine still looks better even without 20gb unique textures)
*why are the people laughing when he shows the new desktop?
i think the dock and menu look good but we hoped for something really new
*aqua scrollbars?
ugly still - please change for final release
*resolution independent ui?
i never cared
*ichat/Finder screensharing!
PEOPLE READ THE FORUMS BEFORE ASKING STUPID QUESTIONS!
dozens of people said, its still in iChat (WAN) and also newly in Finder (via .mac and LAN)!!!
*why is eycandy taking such a big space in the WWDC-keynote when there are many features that are more important to developers?
*time-machine with Quicklook and Spotlight rocks hard!!
*safari3beta
never used a beta with that many bugs, i have to admit.
*we knew nearly half of the things he talked about, from the last keynote?!
i was bored til steve said, they have a premium version.
- - -
steve ballmer was really funny though!

I think it's probably a mix of both...meaning that you will be able to remote view and control the screen, but only of people in your LAN or whom have .Mac to establish the pseudo-VPN. It's a positive sign that the share-screen icon is still in iChat (as witnessed earlier in the threat), unless that is solely for iChat Theater.
I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure that button is to control the tabbed window view. I can't find any video or pictures to confirm it, and the old Leopard video that shows screen sharing doesn't show how you request to screen share.
One question though, had the tabbed messaging feature been announced/ shown before yesterday's keynote? If not than that is good news, because the 'mystery button' is on the old videos that showed screen sharing.

After reading the Leopard Server pages (http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/leopard/more.html) I'm a optimistic about iChat screen sharing...the mention of screen sharing under iChat Server 2 and also Wide-Area Bonjour seem to indicate that it will be possible over WAN.

I followed the keynote here on MR, and then watched it when I got home at night. I was dissapointed, and didn't find anything really new or worth upgrading. Remote Screen? Don't use it. New Finder? Cool, but not a must. Stacks? Meh.
The ONLY thing that may make me want to upgrade is Time Machine - and it's still questionable 'cause I still back-up my data on a regular schedule.
And it's too early to tell; but where are the other 290 features? I'm beginning to think that Leopard is just an over-hyped version of Tiger with a few UI changes and a few new tricks.
Nothing that we didn't know from before. Somehow I suspected that these "secret features" were ballooned out of proportion, and IF there are any, he would have shown something yesterday.

Thank you for repeating this for the 13th time in this thread alone, and posting yet another copy of the screen shot that shows it.
This makes sense from a "want to control computers that you own but are not currently in front of" standpoint, and is good (as long as it doesn't require me to pay a hefty .Mac tax).
What we want to know is if it's also available to control or view other people's computers (for remote assistance, or whatever) which was said to be part of iChat.
We've had one person who supposedly is at WWDC who says that it's still in iChat, which probably is the most positive sign. Two other people have also said, simply, "It's still in iChat", though who knows what proof this is based on.

Personally, I'm glad the menubar has gone transparent as the Tiger one has always been a distraction to me.
I don't particularly love the dock but I really don't care since mine is hidden anyway. I absolutely LOVE the implementation of stacks though. Much better than any of the research/tech demos I've seen. That alone will improve my workflow.
Quick Look ... so simple it's brilliant. This is also something I've been waiting for as I use preview for this already in a much crappier sense.
I really like how Apple is gently testing the 3D waters. ie. Quick Look previews zoom out from Cover Flow in Finder, the dock has a 3D look, etc. I don't think anyone really knows where to go from the 2D GUI were all used to using. This is a safe way to transition and figure out what works best along the way. Smart Apple, very smart.
This year's keynote was by far my least favorite. I like what they're doing with OS X but it didn't blow me away like Tiger did (then again I was coming from XP!). It's never good to repeat things we already know as top features, especially when talking to an audience full of devs! Bad move Steve.
And Core Animation will revolutionize apps. Were going to be seeing a lot less windowed apps and much more non-traditional (think disco) type apps that are more fun to use and have simpler, more enticing interfaces. The computer is going to start to be fun to use again. - yes I ripped that off from a Wired article.
For those who still don't get it, screen sharing is only useful if the computer you need to control isn't in the same residence/LAN as the one you're on.
I want to be able to take control of my father's iMac from 1600 miles away and fix a problem quickly or show him how to use a feature of iLife that he didn't know about. If I have to pay for a .Mac account to get this feature you can bet I won't. The phone, albeit not as efficient, still works for a heck of a lot less.
My guess is that it'll be included into iChat so if someone has an AIM account that'll be sufficient.

I never really used coverflow in itunes - it looked nice enough, but the list view was easier to see more at once.
However, coverflow in finder is much more likely to get my vote - seems like a more intuitive way to browse files of mixed types looking for small details in the preview etc. Now, all we need is multi-touch to make it as natural and easy as possible (like flicking through a book as on iphone!)

Wow, I really like the polish Apple put on their website. But it makes me wonder what happened to the "black" theme makeover some were expecting in Leopard? Not that it was guarunteed by Apple. But at the keynote Steve mentioned the finder is "unified" or something like that... and I didn't see any black transparant windows/menus as we see now in iPhoto, etc.
Do you all think we really are still stuck with Aqua, bubbly blue scroll bars and street light buttons on the windows? I hope not.

:cool:One thing you can take to the bank, that is a really crappy day on a Mac is always ,always prefferable to a really great one on "the other spread".
Lord, even our virii, virisus, whatever, were kind of cool. C'mon, Thursday afternoon, the bookkeeper comes back from her lunch, tries to open a file and her screen starts to melt, or turns to French, it's "Jack Ass Mac!"
Silicon Addict, I think you and I share a love of gadgets, thing-a-mabobs, stuff like the "genie effect", stuff that is irelevant but just neat to have if it (iPhone!) serves a purpose so much the better. Actually "has to work" is key. One cool gadget that I have no use for is "Voice Mail"; $240 a year and you can't screen calls , you have no control.
It took Apple forever to add "sticky menus" and "whysiwyg" to its OS. Also Apples Extention Manager was always a limp noodle, you had have Conflict Catcher for any real control and its features like "Clean Install System Merge"became hard to live without, and its interface was, whew. I see what you mean with the run ons!
Have you noticed how the big trade paperbacks like David Pogues stuff are always soooo much more informative than manuals that actually come with the program or machine;because thyey're written by users not developer. "Sad Mac's, Bombs, and Other Disasters" , a must if you work with OS 9
It is usually 3rd party that comes up with "the goods". There was this feature in OS 9, it was just there, part of view choices, called "Pop-Ups", a really useful "gadget". I had forgotten it when , like stepping on a garden rake there is "Sticky Windows", check it out (another useful gagdet, "Google", shoulda' bought it...). Then there"s "Fruit Menus" from Unsanity Softwate best contextual menu around and do they have a dock f' you.
How about this SA, "Contrextual Docks!", or "Contextual Menu Bars" for the MenuBarNazi from that other thread!
Apples certainty in all this is that our reach will always exceed our grasp; and I don't know about you but when I saw iPhone for the first time, well, I got kind of aroused! D'ya think that's what they were after? OH YEAAAH!
Hey, we cut our teeth on X's 1 thru 4, now we'll fix 5; and I'm still wrapping my mind around that quote near the top o' the thread about a computer w/o
a MS Operating System being like a dog without twelve bricks up its ass.

What exactly do you have on your screen when you entertain? Visualizer is a crowd pleaser and certainly slide shows with music from your iTunes playlists.
C'mon yopr little educated "box" isn't a washer or power tool to be relegated to closet or banished to bedroom, it isn't after all a (shudder) DELL.. It is a vibrant, living representation of who you are and when you pull "Cover Flow "up to full screen and let it do its job it is HOT! The one catch you have to like music and Macs; if you are holding onto an adgenda do us all a favor and go back to the dark side and fester with your fetid friends.
A Note on the Keynote I bet if any of the disappointed had called Steve ahead of time and, well, he would have said something to make them moist. If you want to see a keynote tank before your eyes, watch the one on "Vista"! OY! JUst by waking up that morning Jobs pissed off half the world, and a lot of them had guns! With real bullets.
You people are looking at "Leopard" as ifit were a diamond a finite thing, and that is total CRAP! It is nothing until it is in the hands of the people who will use it, it will then change and live!
You guys are like abunch of bridegrooms who can only view the bride briefly and vicariously; some enjoy with anticipation and perhaps "practice", others are looking, "Ohm'god, her ears are different sizes!""Look! She didn't have that mole on her tukus last week, am I crazy?" "I'm bored it's always the same chick, wait she ain't a chick at all!"
