Hey, I was wondering if there is an easy way to extract audio from ripped (or unripped) DVDs on OS X.

I have a few live concert DVDs that I'd like to extract the audio from so that I can listen to it on my iPod.

If anybody knows any programs that can do this please let me know!

Thanks a lot!

Note: if you have a iPod with video, you can listen to just the audio portion in the "music" menu...

Otherwise (I think it's okay to talk about), I use QuickTime Pro to extract the audio portion...

  • Upload video into iMovie
  • Click on advanced in the tool bar
  • Select extract audio
  • Export as sound file

Job done

All the best,

Frohike

If ripping from DVD I do the following:

Step 1 Extract audio using OSEx to create a VOB file

Step 2 Convert VOB to AC3 using bbDEMUX

Step 3 Convert AC3 to MP3 using mAC3dec

You should be able to find all these apps on Macupdate.com. As far as I remember, they're all freeware or 'voluntary contribution' shareware.

Works for me, but a bit convoluted. I found this method in the ilounge.com forums.

Go get yourself a copy of Audio Hijack from Rogue Amoeba. It'll let you grab audio from ANY source on your Mac.

I've used it to grab stuff that I've ultimately made into ringtones on my cell phone.

yah audio hijack is pretty sweet. for anyone that wants to have a swiss army knife to get audio from one source and into another with several format options its a great tool.
