Can you hook up any brand Monitor to Mac computers?

I was wondering if you are stuck to buy their 23 inch monitor by Apple? There is a Gateway 24 inch that looks awesome and is HD capiable. Could it be used ?

as long as it has a DVI connection it will work.

Even a VGA will work with the DVI to VGA adapter. A lot of people use Dell panels with Macs, 20, 22, 23, 24, 27 etc.
