I think the point is they found a hand model with larger hands.

Apple has been known to use ad photos that are digital composites, ergo scale is kind of irrelevant.
If you look at the iPhone's dimensions you will see that it is .4'' longer than the 30gb iPod, and otherwise the dimensions are the same. It's not that big. I wouldn't say "huge" for sure. I think you'll find it is smaller than it looks in the first pic, though much bigger than it looks in the second pic.

Sheesh... in the after shot his hands have grown! :p
Good catch actually - I've was thinking the iPhone seemed smaller (and more attractive) than in the original images put out there, but it didn't occur to me that it might be a deliberate move.

Bet they don't use those fat fingers in a picture with the iPhone's virtual keyboard :)

Thats actually a pretty smart advertising move to make the phone look smaller by placing it in the hands of andre the giant (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/rumor-crushed/andre-the-giant-selected-as-new-hand-model-for-iphone-268165.php)

According to Apple its 2.4 x 4.5 x 0.46 inches. I drew that out on paper and my mouse fits snugly in the shape.
There's just no way it would have gotten smaller from January to now. Its a ridiculous idea. Look back at the keynote and you'll see that the Phone doesn't look that big in Steve's hands.

The iPhone's listed dimensions are the same as the current 80GB video iPod with an extra half an inch of length and like .1" less thickness.
I think it's going to be closer to the original picture...in my hand anyway. That's probably Yao Ming's hand in number 2.

That is an absurd perceived size difference just by changing hands.
