Apple has released (http://www.apple.com/itunes/?movie=b) a new iPod + iTunes ad featuring Paul McCartney singing "Dance Tonight (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=256136215&s=143441&i=256136217)" (iTunes link).

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2007/06/14/mccartneyiTunes_400.jpg

In May, Apple announced that Paul McCartney would be distributing his music on iTunes (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/05/16/paul-mccartney-on-itunes-beatles-soon/).

I had forgotten that Apple made iPods too. Just thought the were only making those phone things.

I'd have to agree... it didnt sit well with me.
Plus I liked the older style of the apple iPod/iTunes adds better when they were colorful and clean. The recent caribbean like dance video was ok but was getting a little too busy with all the designs. This one was too distracting with all the random stuff all over the place... its starting to look like a target/macy's mix.

I know The Great Steve likes the Beatles and all but is the music of a 65 year old man the sort of hip, cool, funky image they want to portray here? I mean, not being rude, it's hardly cutting edge underground stuff is it?

I love the Chuck Taylors he's wearing. It's really cool to see this man, worth more than anyone else in the world it seems, writing great songs and dressing down all the time. He donated a boat of money to company I write for (Humane Society of the US), so I have great respect for the man.

What about the Bob Dylan commercial? I liked that one. And though Paul and Bob are the same age, Bob (and even his music, sadly) have aged poorly in comparison to Paul and the Beatles.

I like his old stuff better. :D Seriously, I was disappointed that his back catalog on iTunes was not remastered. As best I can tell, the iTunes recordings date back to 1993 when remastering technology was in its infancy.

I'm of the belief that, if Paul could assume a young man's body, his current music would be much more popular. If you consider the best independent bands out there, they sound very similar to Paul's style. Take a look at The Decemberists and John Mayer. Paul's still the best melody maker in modern history.

He looks pretty dorky. However, he's Paul McCartney, and he's still cool even when he's dorky. :)

As Steve is a big Beatles fan, and even called his company "Apple" as an homage to them, I'll bet he's really thrilled that he's got one of the Beatles in an Apple commercial. Must be a pretty big personal milestone.

Point taken. However you'd have to admit that anybody under 25 or 30 would see Paul MaCartney (or John Mayer for that matter) as music that their father would listen to. Now I have no idea what the demographic spread of iPod users are (I'd image it would be pretty wide) but the success of the product has been in no small part due to it's "cool" image. Previous music selections in advertisements have helped this.

Now, is there anybody here who would call Paul McCartney "cool"? Melodic genius or not?

You've got a point. But there certainly are a lot of people who think Paul is cool enough to sell iPods. A lot of my friends in my age range (I'm 26) love the Beatles enough to know a large part of their catalogue and their post-Beatles work. I am a hippy, though.

The ads do show an eclectic range of music. That could only help sales. I don't think anyone would think Paul uncool enough to turn them off to iPods.

Time to hang up your mandolin Paul and head off to the old popstar's home. I never liked the Beetles and least of all Paul. The guy has enough money (just as Lennon demonstrated in his hypocritical "Imagine" video clip) and now that he is rapidly running out of ideas he'll sell his soul if he has to so he can make more. There's no way that McCartney + Wings were better than Lennon.

And I think Apple's main message in the commercial was to point out McCartney's usage of LSD. Did anyone else notice all those peculiar colours and dancing houses and all those flowers twirling around him?

No, not at all. Jef Raskin named the Macintosh, which in case you weren't aware, was released when Apple had already been a company for 8 years. Steve likes the Beatles and he liked apples (and had lived or at least often visited a hippie commune which had an apple orchard).

You sound like one of those people who see a piece of art and simply reduce it's worth to something you could have done in your spare time if you thought of it. Yes, something SO simple and not to difficult at all, and you didn't think of it. You're a genius and I have to listen to what you say.

Somehow difficult songs are something we should strive for then as well?

Also the guy still performs live and tours with his band and is THE richest musical artist in the world with a personal fortune of nearly a billion pounds. He doesn't in fact need to do anything.

"According to Guinness World Records he has sold more records (400 million), penned more No 1 hits (50) and played to a bigger paying audience (350,000) than any other songwriter. It has made him the richest rock star in the world, with an estimated personal fortune of £825m."

Everything McCartney's done since the Beatles has sounded like limp pub-rock. I mean Wings were a joke.

Lennon at least put out some half-decent tunes but, heck, Imagine is one dreary dirge.

Ringo's voiceover work totally upstaged the other Beatles' solo efforts.

Who has listened to the new album? Would you recommend it?? I have always liked the Beatles but have never listened to his solo work.

Despite a LOT of positive press you'll hear about this album, I did not like about half. And I'm a very big Beatles/Paul/Wings fan (I own most everything of theirs/his) -- This album would be a good one to cherry pick off of iTunes with -- however -- if you go iTunes Plus**, it might make more sense to just D/L the whole thing. Cherry-picking from the iTunes Plus albums yield about 8 songs for just over $10 and there are 13 songs on the regular non-deluxe version.

I lucked out and read (on this forum, no less) that Circuit City was selling it for $9.99 last week so I feel like I got at least my money's worth by buying the physical media.

If you've never listened to his solo work -- I would highly recommend ALL MY BEST -- if you want to sample (heavily) his Wings work, I would tell you to get WINGSPAN. Tons of incredible stuff there.

My personal favorite Solo studio Album of Paul's is TUG OF WAR.

If you want to hear something of his that's more recent to compare with, I'd say one of his best in a while is FLAMING PIE (which was about 4-5 albums back).

** DAMN.... just noticed this isn't an iTunes Plus offering -- WTF!! Why would they do that?

Who has listened to the new album? Would you recommend it?? I have always liked the Beatles but have never listened to his solo work.

Start with "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard", his 2005 cd. Then, Band on the Run (1973) and Tug of War (1982). Those are the highlights of his career. If you like what you heard, your next stops would be "Ram" (1971), "Red Rose Speedway" (1973), "Flowers in the Dirt" (1989), "London Town" (1978). A nice anthology would also be "All the Best!" (1987), but I would start with the first three I mentioned (I'm a fan of whole albums, more that greatest hits compilations).

He does look a little freaky, but this ad was very well done! I like the part where he whistles and the Apple logo kind of just... forms. :)

as a beatles fan and a apple geek. i love the new ad:)

I wonder how much Paul was involved with the actual ad design. It has an iPod-ad flavor, but also a hint of Yellow Submarine (the movie, not the song). Although I don't think the Beatles had much to do with the movie.

The song reminds me a bit of City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie, but I can't say exactly why. Maybe the pace and chords are similar.

At first I thought it was a little creepy. Come on...look at this...
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a292/future_ceo/paul.jpg

But on a serious note. Really watch the ad. He is walking to the beat of the bass drum. And when he does the step hop step, the drumb does three quick beats. Even when the electric guitar comes in when the houses start to fly away, he does it again. The head bobs to the beat sometimes. It's just so cool how they cover every detail. And just as he is about to finish whistling and the camera moves away, he is looking exactly where the :apple: is going to appear.

Upon watching this ad under closer inspection, I think it's a true masterpiece - both in terms of the cool art/tech used but also in the music/emotion. Really a well done ad. This ad and the ad with flathead were the best iPod ads of all time. This one is really super though.

I think we are all missing the point here.

The video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTNXrkBSp_o) for this song stars Natalie Portman and that guy from Pirates of the Carribean who keeps losing his eye.... And its directed by Michel Gondry.

Did I just watch Tiny Tim lurch back from the grave with his ukelele?

This skippy dippy Puff the Magic Suppository geezer rock is creepy! I'm going to see that google-eyed bastard in my dreams tonight, hopping around the town in his grandpaboy tennies!

....Thanks for contributing more to popular culture than Paul, I'm glad you can look down on what he has done because you've done so much more for us. Beatles btw, not Beetles.

Perhaps you should read more carefully that quote by Bruce Lee you have in your signature???

McCartney is such a tool lately. if John lennon was alive he would have a talk with McCartney. plus his new cd is horrible. there is a banner at Starbucks that says "an album worthy of his musical legacy.", God I hope not!

I will say that there was more "visual noise" than usual in this ad than previous ads have had. The houses falling from the sky and other little things flying around seemed a little silly.. The last ad "Mi Swing Es Tropical" was excellent IMO.

I gotta strongly disagree with the notion that The Beatles and their solo work is regarded as "Dad's music" or something of that nature. I'm a 21 year old college student, & while everyone has their own musical tastes; The Beatles, and 'classic rock' in general (60's/70s) are immensely popular. Sure, there are some kids who's iTunes library consists of the top 40 rotation and little else, but the vast majority of kids my age have alot of appreciation for The Beatles, etc. I bought the new McCartney album and I really like it, and I have a bunch of friends who do as well. Dance tonight is a simple catchy tune, and thats the point. People like McCartney and Dylan get to record music they craft, and do it the way they want it. Of course there is always a contingent who feels they're past their prime, and should "retire" because their new music doesn't contribute anything, its too over-produced, or simple (e.x. "sounds like a 5 year old wrote it".) Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I can't say I know anyone who thinks songs like Fegalicious by Fergie, or Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne stand up talent/effort wise to what a 65 year old McCartney puts out. (any takers?)

It may not be his best stuff, but ehhh.. its kinda hard to top what alot of people feel is un-topable.

Even though I love many of the beatles songs I've never liked Paul. And this song isn't changing my opinion about him.

I think he looks rather good for a 64 year old though.

yeah that :p

love paul mccartney and the beatles

it's funny how paul has a better voice than most of the "talent" out there today, even at 65...maybe it's because he can hit and hold notes:rolleyes:

if you want examples of other paul mccartney songs

Maybe I'm Amazed

i just saw the ad last night on tv and i thought it was really good. although i do see what people are taking about when they say paul looks a bit creepy.

to the person who said that this song could have been written by a five year old, could you please write a song for us since it's so easy?

Sure, there are some kids who's iTunes library consists of the top 40 rotation and little else, but the vast majority of kids my age have alot of appreciation for The Beatles, etc.For some it's out of date, but I agree that there's another generation of Beatles fans out there. At a high school play last night, I spotted a student in the audience wearing a Beatles T-shirt. Another student told me excitedly that the movie Across the Universe, coming out in September, looks cool because it features Beatles music in the soundtrack (see trailer (http://-trailers.blogspot.com/2007/02/across-universe-2007-trailer.html)). There are no doubt many who think classic rock is Dad's music (translation: uncool), but quite a few get past that to appreciate the best of it.

Apple is smart to throw us a mixture of styles and artists. If some artists are less cool than others, maybe being in iTunes ads will help them regain a bit of coolness. If not, there will be another artist in the next iTunes ad.

Ve 54 years old fathers likes Mccartney's music, uses Internet and has an iPod Video. So this AD has its audience.
I like Mccartney too.

This is my favorite of the silhouette ads -- or whatever it is the silhouette ads have evolved into.

Kooky and weird, yes. Also very sweet, charming, and fun.

Just like Apple!

Not a Beatles or Paul McCartney fan, but the ad is beautiful. Both this and the Brazilian one are just brilliant...
