Anyone else block animated avatar's?

Really narks me off, so i started blocking them a few months ago - now a good half of responses by people are "naked"!!

What is so irritating about them? I find some of them to be quite entertaining.:)

well a way around 'blocking' them would be to just stop them from animating.
i know in Camino you can have them only animate once, which is typically better than repeating over and over again.

me? i love most of 'em.

Mmmmm hmmm, I can't wait to get my very own animated 'tar. It'll be all the more enjoyable knowing that it narks you, combatcolin ;)

Where is the option for blocking animated avatars? I didn't see it yet.

If a particular avatar is very annoying, let us know. We like to leave people free to pick any avatar they like, within reason, but now and then we've asked someone to change an avatar that's clearly too distracting.

iBlue's last one was pretty distracting, but for all the right reasons. ;)

Eh? I've had the same one for almost three years, almost unchanging... this isn't the first time there's been some confusion so...

Public service announcement:

Blue Velvet and iBlue are two different people, with two different avatars. Capice?

Doctor Q, you should animate the Pomodoro sculpture you are using.
in reality it spins.

I just use image blocking software to block a few. Although usually the ones I block aren't necessarily animated... they're just ones that could irritate crazy people at work. I blocked a few of iBlue's and I think rdowns' (some animated, some not) for example. They don't irritate me in particular but they're ones that are "more likely" to get me in trouble.

I don't block any at home.

imho, i think MR's avatar and signature policy is already quite fair, if not stricter than some other forums.

Where is the option for blocking animated avatars? I didn't see it yet.

it's a browser-specific feature. i.e. - firefox allows you to block images and most flash with the adblockplus extension.

My bad. I really did mean iBlue.

Sorry.

Sorry.

Don't apologise to me, apologise to her; she's far prettier, emotionally-balanced, and also younger than I am. No-one should want to be mistaken for me.

Animated avatars? Hate 'em. :D

And who can forget freeny's, extremely distracting avatar (for all the right reasons), that has probably been saved by a few MR users. <wink>

Yeah the best way to block Avatars is to use Pithhelmet in Safari or Adblock Plus in FF

But you will find that single blocked avatars keep coming back. To remove a particular users av you need to replace the bits between the two "=" signs, with a "*" (without the quotes) as per the image below.

I would use something like

http://forums.macrumors.com/image.php?*u=30694&*

where the first '*' takes out the session (if any) and the second '*' takes out the dateline, leaving the user number of the 'tar you want to block...

OK you got me fair and square Mitthrawnuruodo, I didn't notice because the above still works but I'll revert back to your suggestion.

I should have checked my own thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=223463&highlight=avatar)

edit: if you want to block my 'tar you'll need to switch off everyones sigs as well. heh heh.

I thought iBlue's avatar was ****......... oh hang on :p

To be fair I've never seen an animated avatar, so I guess PithHelmet's doing its job.

oooh, someone is a bit touchy eh?

I like to think of a web page as if it was a page from a newspaper or magazine which i can read at my leisure, having umpteen annoying little animated logo's and flash anims (blocked Flash as well - except for youtube anyway) distracting me.

But, as with most things in life - each to there own.

It blocks some cities as well, take S-c-u-n-t-h-o-r-p-e for example, it comes out as S****horpe

If you used the coordinates on my location field you're about 60 miles out. But yes, they *were* the days, the world famous RAT parties of the 80's and all that, which started the whole worldwide rave thing.

PS Just saw 'Edited for language'. Sorry, I could have sworn I put asterisks in. But how come the word 'bollocks' is freely acceptable in numerous posts but not ******?The list of words deemed inappropriate (which is updated from time to time) is one of those "community standards" issues for which there is no precise method of determination. We try to keep the site family-friendly for ages 13 and up, with admittedly mixed success.

As for asterisks, the rules do not permit bypassing the profanity filter by replacing selected letters with asterisks or similar-looking letters. If "foobar" was on the list, you would not be allowed to say foobar, f00bar, f**bar, foob@r, and so on. The software would catch only the first form automatically, so the moderators would have to clean up posts manually if the other forms were used, assuming the posts were noticed or reported. We would probably permit a one-letter version, e.g., ********* for foobar.

Sorry that I'm off-topic here, but it was a legitimate question deserving an answer.

This is about the time where someone comes into the thread and posts a link to that very naughtily named city in Deutchland.

I see, thanks. But this editing seems to be very regional (American?) The word 'bo**ocks' I wrote above (to prove a point) is very unacceptable in the UK.

Every time an animated tar thread comes up I feel bad for having one because I don't really care about my tar that much. But then the community demands it stays! Sorry anti-animated tar community!

PS Just saw 'Edited for language'. Sorry, I could have sworn I put asterisks in. But how come the word 'bollocks' is freely acceptable in numerous posts but not ******?

Because bollocks is a fake swear word made up by the British so they can be different. :P

Yours is one of the few I like. It's award-winning, remember? And probably because it's not too colourful and is less distracting. Or that it's very cute. :)

Oh yes, the stir that was this cheeky little avatar: http://blue.yo-momma.net/upload/files/1/thetar.gif and its more innocent follower: http://blue.yo-momma.net/upload/files/1/HornPlayer.gif

The cheekier one got reported ( ) but the previous just ran its course and I took it down. I've had a couple others that seemed to turn heads but as always "for all the right reasons". What can I say? I like my saucy avatars sometimes.

My favourite is the complaint about being busted for fooling around at work because of these avatars. Poor little avatar scapegoats... hardly the real problem, eh?

I saw a similar photo somewhere in the Town that had a pictogram of children and under the pictogram on the same pole was the name of the City.

I was going to post a warning for the link but I realised that you'd have to fill in the missing bit anyway. Imagine someone complaining they went to the link and were offended. Reminds me of the joke about the old lady who complained to the police about the man who regularly bathed naked in the opposite flat. When the police arrive they said it was too far to see. "you'll need these binoculars" boom boom
