The kids from smashsomestuff.com are at it again! After smashing PS1, 2 and 3, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboys, XBox 360's, computers, iPods, a PSP and some cell phones, the insecure brats are about to destroy an Apple iPhone. They are trying to raise $500. Let's hope they get stuck with an expensive contract.

It will be funny if they end up getting the 500 and then having to spend twice that on the contract.

They won't get stuck in a contract. Even paying $200 isn't a problem (for early termination), they will make that back in ad revenue alone.

Don't get me wrong, I won't send them any money, but that's what people are paying for. Some people are entertained by this sort of thing. At least no one really gets hurt by it.
Whoever mentioned their ad revenue earlier is dead on. They'll make many times more than the cost of a plan and the iPhone in ad revenue alone.

I wouldn't compare plays, sporting events and amusement parks to this. The latter can stimulate our minds, creativity and contribute to culture. This is mindless child's play.
But of course people can do what they want with their money. I'm just stating what came to my mind when I saw the list of names and amounts contributed.

Naw...I'm pretty sure Apple's current flagship store is the new one in New York City(the HUGE class cube!)
As for breaking the phone, stupid, waste of money, could do a lot of better things with the cash, but these people are look for hits on their web pages. Stay away, ignore them. They'll keep doing it, but I can't see how flamming them would do any good. I've tried, it was pointless, and a waste of time.
Still not a bad way to kill time if your every bored however you could debate something worth debating

this is stupid but again you're wrong too. There are multiple flagship stores. read this: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2004/feb/26sfstore.html . San Francisco has one of Apple's FIVE flagships.

Someone at that store should just stalk those kids and snatch the iPhone from them before they smash it. The rest of the crowd should then block their path as the snatcher makes his scape. It wouldn't be stealing and it would teach those guys that you don't mess with Mac people. The world of the interwebs would then be witness to the strong bond between us, sippers of Steve's coolaid.

HAH! That's their whole point. Everyone lets the new technological goodies take over their lives, instead of us being in control of our own lives and asking ourselves "Could my X amount of dollars go towards something useful in the world, like feeding starving people in Africa, or AIDS or Cancer research?" Well it could, but I just really have to have the iPhone for my own personally entertainment. I'll just go ahead and drop the money on the iPhone then and all that other stuff will take care of itself.
I love how everyone thinks they could "do a lot better things with the cash". Did you ever stop and ask yourself that same question?

Yes...which is why I donate money, help people out, volunteer in my community.
But I'm not trying to say I give up all my pleasures, I don't. However when I spend money on something, its to be used. My iPhone is going to do something for me, not buy it, break it and laugh. Not to mention the possibility of limited stock.
Don't try and defend these actions, there stupid. You disagree, but I think its worth noting you didn't give a reason why you think this is a good idea, simply questioned other people reasons why this is a bad idea.

really now. after smashing all those game consoles, isn't this getting old and lame?
Even their smashing methods aren't creative: sledgehammer, throwing it, stepping on it, jumping on it...yawn.
It'd be much more interesting if they were to..say, take a drill to it, or burn it, or chemically melt it. At least then we'd have some useful benchmarks to analyze.

Actually, they have drilled into a 3rd gen iPod, microwaved an iPod Nano, blew up a PSP and covered and XBox 360 with gasoline and burned it.

Are they not going to make more iPhones than just that one? I stand by the fact that the iPhone is a WANT item, not a NEED item. It's complete luxury.

Obviously I'm talking to a fanboy who's gonna wait in line for days before the release, so I'm gonna try to explain myself if a rational way:
I'm not defending anyone. I'm just saying everything thinks they're not the brightest for doing it. Yeah, they might be idiots for doing it compared to your standards but who's to say they're in the wrong for doing it? Just because a majority thinks one way doesn't make it right. If that were the case, 1 billion Chinese would be right about communism, and capitalism would be WRONG. But capitalism isn't wrong (appearantly), and therefore they can buy it and do whatever they want with it. Wouldn't you be pissed off it everyone told you how to use your iPhone?
Therefore I think this is a good idea (and I kind of thought this was clear in my first post, but I'm talking to fanboys i guess) because it wakes people up from their "I must have attitude" (unless they're a fanboy) and maybe think about their decision instead of buying just because Apple has said it's will revolutionize the world. How many other things has SJ said would revolutionize the world????

Oh...I never though of it like that
If their were 100 people in the USA would could buy iPhones at launch, only 20 want one, and Apple only made 10 phones. Some one would go home with out one...10 people wouldn't get one. Let say one of the 10/20 people who got an iPhone, broke it as soon as they got it, thats one less person who gets an iPhone to use.
Obviously I'm talking to a fanboy who's gonna wait in line for days before the release,
Is that needed? I'm not here to get into a flame feast. I'll ignore it.
I'm not defending anyone.
I disagree
. Yeah, they might be idiots for doing it compared to your standards but who's to say they're in the wrong for doing it?
Clearly, I am...plus the other who disagree with them. And just because the general population think one way doesn't make it right, but in this case they are right.
If that were the case, 1 billion Chinese would be right about communism, and capitalism would be WRONG. But capitalism isn't wrong (apparently), and therefore they can buy it and do whatever they want with it.
You really think all the people in China support Communism? Also what kind of Communism do they even have? Its slowly going away from the communism. If we took a world vote right now, capitalism would win. Most of the people of the world want Capitalism. Lots of people in China want Capitalism.
That was a side not, and doesn't mean I dislike communism.
. Wouldn't you be pissed off it everyone told you how to use your iPhone?
I wouldn't really care what everyone told me to do...however that would make it right what I was doing with my iPhone. Clearly these people don't care either. I'm not saying someone would go stop them with a gun or anything, I simply disapprove of it.
Lol...certainly didn'y make me thing of that. They do it for views, hits on their web page, not to "wake people up"...their not doing this as a moral act against ignorance, so don't try and make it seem like they are.
And they certainly aren't doing it to stop people from buying Apple's newest thing. They aren't doing this for a cause, a noble act....its to see the reaction on people's faces.
And honestly, how many people do you think are buying this because Jobs said so? I'd wage most people are buying it because they like what it does.

Someone might have to wait!? I hope they don't die from not getting one on the first day. BTW, I sure hope this isn't Apples launch plan. And didn't you say in another post that "THERE WOULD BE PLENTY TO GO AROUND".
Is that needed? I'm not here to get into a flame feast. I'll ignore it.
No. Sorry. My bad. But you're quite vehement about this. (Please refer to your sarcasm in the previous quote.)
Clearly, I am...plus the other who disagree with them. And just because the general population think one way doesn't make it right, but in this case they are right.
HUH? They're right now because they are in the majority or just because you say so? I'm really confused, but since you know what's right and wrong, tell me if it's wrong let an innocent person die just to save 10 bad people.
And since you polled everyone in China about communism, I pulled everyone in the States, and the rest of the world. And guess what, not everyone likes Capitalism, just those rich enough to buy whatever they want. So no Capitalism doesn't win. (Yes, communism vs. capitalism, not the best argument ever.)
Whether I'm defending them or not, they can do whatever they want with their money. All I was ever trying to say was our WANTS blind our NEEDS sometimes. Thanks for arguing so much just to prove my point:
"Let say one of the 10/20 people who got an iPhone, broke it as soon as they got it, thats one less person who gets an iPhone to use."

Guys, guys, guys! Lets not fight among ourselves, that is what they want us to do. They do this everytime some hotly anticipated device is released in low quantities. They do it for fame and to piss off the rabid fans.
I still say we teach them some humility by helping someone snatch it before they go trough with it. I mean come on, imagine the stupid looks on their faces when for the first time they are the ones the joke is on.

I get a kick out of their stunts. Mostly out of the reactions of the people who get visibly upset at the spectacle.
And while they can easily raise $500 to get a 4G model, they'll also be stuck with a, most likely expensive, 2 year commitment to AT&T. Sure, they could use the SIM card on another phone as long as they didn't sign up for some iPhone-only service plan that would be useless in any other phone.

I would laugh if they didn't meet the goal. $10 and a week and a half to reach $500 + contract, they have $90 right now... heh. If they do get enough, I think somebody should turn the tables on them. Actually, I bet eventually a battery will explode and one of them will get hurt... ha, serves whoever it is right. Ooooh, what fools, imagine the potential of that phone, and they just smash it... gets me sorta steamed

Well the idea is this: Take a product that people line up for, a product in short supply, and destroy one. It is supposed t be a show for all those still in line, those who desperatly want one but got sent home empty handed. In that sense, it isnt really dead, they are still laughing at all those people everytime they do it.
With that said though, they are weird people... the PS3 one scared me. I dont really like what they are doing because it is crule but if you stop taking it personally it is just stupid.
Some people stand in line to make a profit by selling their spot, others to smash the product and sell ads.
The smash an iPod was the really stupid one. Anyone could buy those as they were not in short supply.

And by doing this, they're indirectly providing jobs to the makers of the iPhone because they paid for it. People tend to not understand (or, at any rate, think about) that money doesn't just disappear. Just because you use it on wasteful things such as this, it's not as though it ceases to exist. Maybe you believe it would be better used to send the money for food, but if they're indirectly and partially providing jobs to the say 1000 people that are making the parts and R&D for this product, then they're really dividing the $600 1000 ways, minus the amount Apple keeps in its coffers directly.

Only crime is the amount of $ they make in the process.
If it's going to be a public spectacle, then make sure they RECYCLE the pieces, and pay for any hazmat cleanup should they breech the battery, ect... Gotta show a good example for all the copy-cats.

That's exactly what I was thinking.
You're more likely giving a man money to take care of his family (indirectly) by buying an iPhone than you are sending money to a charity that actually goes directly to the homeless, poor, hungry etc... There's fraud everywhere. At least you know some of your money is going to someone when you're buying the iPhone (what's your proof of actually feeding a kid when you send money to charity--a picture of him?!). Your money does go to someone somehow. Now that was a far shot of an example of how money makes the world go round, but this whole topic is pretty outrageous.
Besides, these are kids anyway. They, and others their age, get a kick out of seeing people donate money (which, IMO, is stupid in the first place) for pretty much nothing. Prove how much people wanna pay just for some entertainment.
