I lost my cellphone somewhere in my house.

I know its in my house because I can connect to it via bluetooth on my iBook. I just don't know where it is because its on silent. What should I do?
 
Carry your iBook around, when you lose the bluetooth connection you know you're heading in the wrong direction.

With a range of 30 feet and my home only being 35 feet long, that method would leave me with nothing. 😛
 
Wait until night (when it's quieter and you might hear the vibration, and it's darker so you might see the glare from the phone's screen) and call it.

I don't know of any way that you could leverage the Bluetooth to locate the phone any easier than just tearing your home apart!
 
Admit it - you've checked the refrigerator at least once, haven't you?

Seriously, though, it can't possibly be in too many places. Do you have a car in the garage where it could be?

Check the sofa cushions? Bed? When's the last time you used it?
 
Mine's accidentally fallen into the trash before. I've found it at he last minute before throwing it out. Other places could be below/between/behind furniture or underneath your bed....or mixed in with laundry. Maybe you have a pack rat in your house who stole the phone and now has it in his den in the walls. You never know.

Good luck! But I'm sure the battery will die soon enough. Then, all hope is lost. 🙂
 
What blocks BT signals and is still portable? If someone could tell you that, then you could use it to block directions and see when your phone gets dropped as a link.

It was underneath my bed. I probably fell asleep with it and it fell behind the bed.

So anti-climatic.. I read this thread hoping for something more than "it was under my bed"... Next time you lose it and post make it show up someplace more exciting..

It fell into a black hole in my closet and was sent through a time continuum to the outer reaches of a planet distanced by many solar systems, and the only reason I know that is because the life forms who found it took pictures for me and didn't delete them from the phone memory... something like that..

What Would MacGyver Do? One of two things:

(1) Start a large file send to the phone. Then move around. Watch the transmissions speeds. The closer you are, the better the connection, the higher the transmission rates.

(2) Buy one of those cheap bluetooth usb dongles, break it open (using your swiss army knife to pry open the plastic), and remove the antenna or cut it down. What would be ideal in a "35 ft" apartment? 5ft connection distance? 2ft?

and put it back together with a paper clip and some duct tape 😉
 
I hear that the forthcoming version of Google Desktop Search will be able to solve this kind of problem. 😀
 
this thread was waaay too entertaining. 😀

i kept waiting for someone to say apple or mac.

maybe Leopard will have phone tracking software... or the next iphone will have lost phone recall abilities.
 
Is it in your pocket? Or even worse, in your hand? Are you talking on it now?

Just remember, it's always in the last place you look, or, if you aren't very observant, it could be in any of the places you looked and you didn't see it.

P.S.
I do think waiting until dark, and turning all the lights off in your house and calling it so the screen lights up might help.
 
this may seem crazy, but bare with me... 😎

cover your ibook in aluminium foil all-around apart from a opening the size of your fist where the glowing apple logo is.

then pick up the ibook and slowly aim the hole at areas of the room and watch signal increase or descrease.

my thinking is that laptop antenneas are usually across the backs of monitors, a fist size hole should diffract the wave less, the foil blocks the signal 😛

thinking about it now, you wouldnt be able to see the signal detector so, either use an external monitor connected or put the foil hole over the from of the screen where the signal can be seen.

(I'm sorry if this comes out as gobbeldigouk, its early in the morning here, i should be asleep. It should give you lot a chuckle anywho 🙂 )
