Reports from the Other Coast state that the AT&T store computers are down. The first three transactions took over 45 minutes at a store in Manhattan. The first sale at an AT&T store in Jersey took 30 minutes alone. They'll presumably get that fixed before 6pm PST, but be aware. (It's covered on an Engadget post and thread.)
Heh -- and the phones aren't activating. Not sure if it's AT&T's problem or not, but iTunes is just hanging for a half-hour, never authorizing the phone. Ouch. Again, I'm hoping this is resolved by the time this coast gets home with phones.
Great, it's not like AT&T didn't have 6 months lead time or anything. Oh wait...

I am number 241 at the Northridge store......... Hope they have enough.
The line goes way outside the mall now
Hey Gamergod....no way are you #241 in line. I am about #125 right now, and pretty darn close to the end of the line. You're either not counting right or you're spreading FUD...which is it?

One of my friends is WAY up in in the line and she is number 140 she said, and the line wraps around the mall in front of me. I did throw out a random number which i thought would be close but i'm def in the mid 200's. Msging from my wireless evdo card.
She said she just told people what you said around here and they are laughing at her.

I had a feeling this would happen. That's a lot of phones that need to be activated at once. I'm sure Apple did their best to make the set up smooth, but if it has to hit an AT&T server at any point in the transaction it's probably going to keep crashing.

Any word from Glendale, the Beverly Center, or The Grove? The last updates from there were hours ago -- before people got off work. With all of the claims of "I'm going at 5:00" I've been reading, how's the line now?

Okay, gamer god, everyone here...and we are outside...laughed at your comment...cause at least 6 of us have counted the line in front of us on water runs, and I am #106. Messaging from my MBP with EVDO card as well. I really think you're spreading FUD....unless you are outside, and in line behind me.
I'm in a red hat on the curb, come say hi, if you're really here.

Decided to just go home :(

Went to the Cerritos store and they said they never got any shipment. Told us we could order it and they will have it shipped to us. Passed on that and went over to South Coast Apple Store. Line is moving quite rapidly and probably around 50 people in front of me. Wish me luck!
Typing in line right now.

Folks, try out the Apple store in Glendale. It wasn't bad! I got there at 5 and I just got back with two 8gbs (gf and I).
They had a crap load in the back and the line to wait was getting smaller.

0s and 1s - Nice call. The line at the Galleria (may I never step foot in it again) had just finished. I walked up and grabbed one and was out the door in less than 5 minutes. Glad I took my chances not waiting in line and having a couple of post work beers....

Can't speak for other stores but don't give up if you still want an iPhone. I was just at SM Promenade half an hour ago and it literally took 30 minutes to stand in line and leave with my beautiful new iPhone! Just give them a call to see. They had tons left when I was there.
Apple handled this launch soooo well.

I just showed up at 10:15, and was back in my car with an 8gig by 10:30. No joke. Walked in, picked one up,paid for it, and left. The salesman said they got over 2000 in, so there should be TONS left for tomorrow. Good thing I didnt wait in line all day!

gamergod - I don't know what your lamer game was, but you're obviously full of FUD. I doubt you were even there to get an iPhone. Those of us outside had ours within an hour of the store opening. It looked like by that time that anyone showing up after 8:00 or so probably didn't have to stand in much of a line,if any at all.
Oh well, the thing's fantastic so far. Hope everyone enjoys theirs.

i ended up going to the santa monica apple store at 3:00 fri morning because i couldn't sleep. i was about 60th in line. even though they didn't run out of iphones, i'm glad i waited since it was a cool experience... i met all sorts of people: a guy from new york, a 10 year old kid who somehow convinced his dad to wait in line and buy him an iphone, a guy with an awesome mustache, a woman with a cute little dog, a group of homeless guys that were paid by some jackass to wait in line for him, and a bunch of others.
i was surprised they weren't more careful with crowd control. there wasn't any stampeding but i definitely saw a few people cut in line. lame.
according to the apple website, half of the california stores are now sold out.

My thoughts exactly. A lot of people don't get it, and laughed at me saying if you'd just waited until 9:00 you'd have one without the wait. True, but how bad would I have felt if I didn't get one?
And I also met a few nice people and talked with several more. The energy and excitement of an event like this and saying "I was there" aren't tangible benefits, but they're real. It's kind of like standing in line to see a Star Wars movie on opening day. Why bother when you can wait a day or two and see it without the long lines? You bother because it's part of what makes the experience fun, and to be able to say you saw it first.

@the grove at around 2-3pm there were a whole bunch of people in line. not sure why...but apple store employees were passing out water and getting more of those ...crowd control ropes (what ARE they called?). I'm guessing they're waiting for iPhones but that doesn't make much sense to me

It could be that they were waiting for the iPhone tutorials. I heard that Apple started running them on Sat.

No, the lines at the Grove on Sunday around 3PM were for iPhones. I tried to get two for my parents and all 8 Apple stores in the area were out of them. Only two (Grove and Promenade) were getting shipments in. Ended up getting 2 in Santa Monica around 5pm but they ran out of 8 Gigs shortly after. Looks like its turning into a Wii-like situation.

There is one lonely guy in a tie die t-shirt (i think) outside Aliso Viejo AT&T. It's sad and funny all in one.
I wanted to buy him a burger tonight!
i was #4 in this line, and encountered said tie die man.

I went to the Beverly Center store to get an iPod accessory (TUE 7-3 at about 10:30 am PDT) thinking they were out of phones. According to the online inventory there were none as of 9 am this morning. They just received what appeared to be a large shipment for they were setting out dozens of iPhone bags. Got the phone (8 gb) and was out of the store in about 3 minutes! Next stop - activation!

Stealing cell phones is a pretty stupid thing to do. Apple has on record the IMEA and serial numbers of the phone you bought... It shouldnt be to hard to tack the little fuxkers down if they try to activate it...
