fingers are crossed. I keep repeating to myself compulsively that the powerbooks WILL be updates. I expect there is a chorus for that particular desire.

Actually I do expect some sort of minor release whether it be hardware or software. I expect a software update since Jobs won't be there.

I'm definitely expecting a 15" PowerBook. I'm not getting one, but updates are good for the people who actually do want them, and I know there's a lot of you that do!

Agreed if there were going to be even speed bumps on the PowerBooks Jobs would be there. Maybe he will make a surprise appearance.

But Joswiak is the VP of hardware product marketing. I'm thinking/hoping we'll see PowerBook G4 updates.

As far as I know Jobs is the only one who makes new hardware presentations. Joswiak is probably there to give a demo on the G5s.

not really sure. i think apple would do something surprising like that but who knows.

Well I am looking for a PowerBook update since it has been almost a year since the 1Ghz PB G4 was released.

I'm hoping for a pb 15" release at the Macworld Creative Pro event but from what I've seen thus far I don't think any new hardware (major stuff not minor) has ever been released in the last couple of years without a gradiose introduction by Jobs. I could be wrong though (please oh please let me be wrong) and we may indeed see a shiny new ALUMINUM 15" pb. If so I'll be sure to snatch one up immediately regardless.

If it is just a 15" PowerBook update, Jobs doesn't have to be there. It's not like he can run around on stage going like, "It now comes with the revolutionary 1.2 Ghz G4, and the same technology that was available on the 17" in January."

I am hoping Apple pulls a PowerBook update just by announcing it on their website, like they did with the final G4 Power Macs in late January, shortly after a recent Steve Jobs keynote.

If they don't upgrade thee PowerBooks, then this year will be more a Desktop year (with the G5 release) the a Laptop year. And SJ said it will be the year of the Laptop.

I think there will be a speed bump update to the PowerBooks next week. I agree with the other posters in that Jobs doesn't have to announce it. I mean did Steve need a keynote to speed bump the eMac or the iBook earlier this year? That's right, the answer is NO. A speed increase isn't all that big of a deal, and I think that the VP of Hardware can handle describing the new features of the 15" (in line with the 17"). I just hope that the 12" is updated with more than just a 1GHz G4.

I'd love to see the powerbooks updated. Also, I'm wondering about the LCDs....although I don't imagine that they'll come out till after the new G5s start shipping (most likely be a price drop and they've probably made a ton of orders to go along with the new PowerMacs).

Let's hope, man the G5 is getting boring already :D

I want to see some pro hardware that's not a G5 like a new D-SLR or something...

Does anyone else expect that the iBooks are in dire need of a swift kick in the pants? From what I've seen in the past few years, each of the lines (iMac, PowerMac, etc.) tend to go for a few years, and then get somewhat tired and only have small improvements. It seems like the last improvement is one of the biggest yawners before an amazing change happens.

Take a look at the iMac updates in mid-2001. Just speed bumps for the most part, nothing too exciting. The next iMac, however, was the flat panel iMac.

Even the last line of G4 PowerMacs weren't overly impressive and it seems like not many people were buying them (perhaps they were waiting for the G5 to finally come out).

So, perhaps it is time for the iBook to get a major overhaul. G4 chip finally? Airport Extreme? A free bag of peanuts or pretzels with every iBook order?

Yes, it does seem like the PB line might be next, or at least sync the 15" laptop with its aluminum brethren, and fix the heat problem. At this point, if I bought a laptop, I would still go for the 15" since the titanium seems to not conduct heat quite as well, and a 15" display is about right for my needs. Airport Extreme would be nice, but I've never made use of even standard Airport cards.

Ultimately, I'm not expecting any new hardware upgrades, but one never knows.

i think the iBooks will be getting a major upgrade soon. something like this.
1Ghz G3
40 or 60 GB HD
1 FW400
1 USB
1 USB2
Major Case Redesign

i'm not sure weather this update will come at MW or a little after it. all i know that it will be soon.

like edinweath said, it's time for a major update.

I simply am not sure what is going to happen. Apple is very unpredictable these days unlike in years past when I could be assured that products would be released in july, january, feb, may, and october. It would be nice to see the powerbook updated, an updated ical, and updated ibook. The iMc could use an update too!

i jut thought of something...
year of the laptop.
MWNY is for consumers.

this makes perfect sense. also, the last iBook updates were just speed. same thing with the last CRT iMac updates. they can still boot into OS 9! steve declared OS 9 dead how long ago?

just think about it.

I'm thinking they won't do much more than minor speed bumps and maybe some minor hardware upgrades to at least the 15". This is probably the first MacWorld in five years that I'm not excited about. Steve, you won!

15.4" PowerBook would be nice.

1.25 GHz iMac would be nice also.

i don't think they'll redesign the case until they put the g4 in it... or change the chip however they plan to. i mean, it's due for a big increase, and even though the sahara g3s might not be much lower than the g4 (if not better), they can't put it at say 1.2 ghz g3 while the powerbooks have 1 ghz g4...

anyhoo. i am not expecting anything. and may not even make use of my macworld pass this year...

they *have* redesigned the case and they *have* put a G4 in it - they call it the 12" powerbook. Maybe they'll just add altivec to the G3's, and replace the G4's in the powerbooks with new G3s that run faster, consume less power, and run cooler.

I seriously doubt that we'll see an iBook update for another month, at least. The last update (yes, just a speed bump) was just a couple of months ago, but it is unlikely that we'll see anything more until after the PowerBooks are updated.

Could you imagine if both the iBook and the PowerBook had 1GHz processors? That would be a marketing nightmare. Why would anyone spend the extra money on a PowerBook? And with the features that you've suggested, the iBook would have more features than the PowerBook (i.e. USB2), and yet cost less?

Nope. I'm sorry, I just don't see it.

Now, I could see a PowerBook update, followed by a mid- to late- August iBook update (just in time for school), but the most I think we'll see in the portable line is an updated PowerBook line...

Of course, this is all just my, rather worthless, opinion...

Well the Keynote will be given by a Hardware VP so Software updates are pretty unlikely :)

You all are missing the most obvious possible hardware update.

NEW PRO MOUSE AND KEYBOARD, BABY!

:-)

A 15" PowerBook would be nice, and is possible, but keyboard and mice are as much hardware as anything else and I think it's a good likelyhood.

now there is something steve might not demand to announce himself. as for powerbooks, speed bump or no, i don't think they will get updated at MWCP. it will be before, i think, and then they will maybe be displayed later, or perhaps they will be updated later. soon, but not at MWCP.

I think Steve Jobs would be there if they were introducing a new iDevice. As for updates...I don't think iBook is that likely, but we may see it. I think that updated PowerBooks is more likely, and updating a product line certainly doesn't require the presence of the Reality Distortion Field...;)

I agree with the previous posters about Steve not needing to be present. I highly doubt we will see a G5 powerbook - that would warrant SJ being there. For just an update - not required.

I highly doubt the ibooks will be updated. Too close to the powerbooks already. I would like to see 15" PB (15.4") updated to AL, backlite keyboard, FW4 & 800, USB 2, maybe a speed bump. I have been holding out for this update so I hope it happens. I am really dying for the backlite keyboard - that is just so cool!

Back a moment to the ibooks. Because the PB and ibooks are so close, I would say an ibook update in Jan. would be more likely. At that time we might finally see the G5 in the PB line, allowing the G4 (or G3 Gobi) to move into the ibook.

I was suprised to see no one mention an iPod update. Rumors were flying around a month ago about a new, improved dock - that could be nice. Would also like a better battery life and bigger hard drive. I can wish it has been 6 months. :D

I'm not sure, but I'm gunna go with a no.

It is unlike apple to update hardware so quickly after a hardware update, although it HAS been done before.

I still doubt it happening, but I could most definitely be wrong.
