so people upgrade their mac mini's to core2 duos, is it possible to upgarde the Core2 duo in an imac to a faster speed? Say drop in a 2.4gig chip in a 2.0gig 17" imac?

I think it's possible, but not worth it--2.4GHz Meroms retail for $550+.

The iMacs have a 667 bus so its not as simple as just "dropping a 2.4Ghz" in. Added to the fact its a bit of a pain to get the case open I would have to say it isnt worth the effort.

The best you can do on the current iMacs is the T7600 (2.33GHz).

iMacs use socket M. The 2.2/2.4/2.6 (soon) CPUs use socket P. Unless Intel decides to produce faster socket M CPUs (not likely because socket M belongs to the soon deprecated Napa chipset), you are out of luck. :(

i doubt the speed bump will be worth the money.
