I really liked the idea of getting the 17" MBP with the high-resolution screen, but now that I have it and have played with it, I am wondering, did I get one that is too big? I love this thing, just wondering if it's too much. Someone convince me I made the right choice, lol.

You made the right choice.

But if you feel like you don't want it, feel free to send it to me!

That's what I wanted to hear...lol. Now, to find a back pack to carry this thing!

And I think I'll keep it!

I personally think 17" laptops are crazy-huge, but you must have had some want or need for a screen that size or you wouldn't have bought it!

Definitely not portable, though, by my standards anyway. 15" is the absolute maximum I'd be prepared to lug around.

*hugs MBP*

you're not going to find a smaller, lighter 17" laptop. if you're not going to be carrying it everywhere you go, i think it's a fine decision. you've got more pixels and screen real estate in your laptop than i do on my 20" cinema display. so don't fuss about your purchase; you and millions like you should be happy.

that is, unless you do take your laptop with you everywhere you go, lugging it around, trying to find comfortable space for you to work. do you really want to be burdened by all that weight, especially when everyone around you has got smaller and lighter laptops? the sight of a less than 3 lb laptop would make yours feel like a brick! sorry, bub, wrong choice. but of course i'm just kidding! congrats on the purchase.

Its definitely not portable, but if you don't mind a workout on the go, then it shouldn't be a problem ;) On a more serious note though, what are you going to be primarily using it for? State the stuff that you will be doing more often and not stuff that you would LIKE to be doing on it as they are 2 completely DIFFERENT things :)

Congrats on your new buy!

Cheers.

I know it's not a MBP story but similar in thought..

I bought my 24" imac and i seriously thought I had made a major mistake because it was "way too big". Now it looks just right.:)

You will think the same way about your MBP in a couple days! Congrats on your new purchase!

Yea, but your iMac is for home while his MBP is something he's going to be carrying around ;)

The 17" is a great computer with a great screen. It is much lighter any other 17" so it was a good choice!

My 17" MBP is only about an inch wider than my Sony Vaio, and the same depth. I'm defintely glad I went with the 17 over the 15, and even more glad that I made the switch.:D

Personally, I think you made a horrible decision. You're going to pay the price for a long time.

It's strange, but I think it makes a big difference whether you are sitting with it on your lap or at a desk. The 17" feels pretty large on my lap, no doubt. When I move my desktop keyboard and put it on a desk though, it seems like the perfect size. I think it has everything to do with the extended palmrests to accommodate the extra 1.6" of diagonal screen space. If you're using it at a slightly awkward angle, they can get in the way and make the laptop seem too big. I thought I was a total sucker for buying that Rain Design iLap thing from the Apple site but it actually does a great job of dissipating the heat and putting the computer at a usable angle when it's on your lap.

I have no regrets about my 15" Macbook Pro. The 17" ones are okay for a lot of people, but I bought mine to be portable. If the 13" Macbooks had a better graphics card I would have bought one of those instead. :)

I personally can't go above 13 after having this macbook. That's just me though. You'll just have to lug around that extra bit.

The 17" MBP is actually not THAT much bigger than the 15". It's definitely smaller and lighter than 17" PC laptops I've seen.

I'm happy with my 17" MBP, my only worry is sometimes the fonts are a little small and stressing my eyes (high res version). Hopefully Leopard will fix this

It's a good choice. It's only like 18% larger and 26% heavier than the 15".

For me the 17" is to big, slides of sofa...it has to be deskbound. 15" max for me ...

You might have bought the wrong one. But you could say the same thing had you bought the 15". There's no way to know until you've used both the same amount of time to know which one is best for you. Don't worry about it too much, I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy your machine (I ordered the same one, it's in transit right now). Don't regret your purchase, it's too great of a computer to do that.

Just relax, you have a beautiful machine and everything will turn out fine.

Haven't you learned from all the whining on these forums that any notebook over 12" is so ridiculously large that only a bodybuilding giant could ever possibly make use of it?

You should have gone with the 10.746" PowerBook G5 with 128GB Solid State Disk. ;)

Thanks all. I got this over-sized, hugely large 17" because I'm going into graphic design and figured I could use the high resolution screen. I also hope to be editing videos on it soon. Maybe someday soon I'll be using it here at work for designing jewelry. The program (Windows only) has to have a minimum screen resolution of 1680x1050, although some people have got it to work with a 1440x900 with minimal loss of menu bars at the bottom and stuff.

I really shouldn't feel too bad about it, my brother just bought an HP Pavilion dv9330us (http://www.amazon.com/Pavilion-dv9330us-Entertainment-Processor-SuperMulti/dp/B000OP8AYO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-0350912-9078514?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1182378752&sr=8-1). His measures up at .24" narrower (the MBP is wider). However, his is 1.25" deeper than mine, and .57" thicker as well as almost a pound heavier (.9lbs more to be exact). So, I guess in the end mine is a lot less to haul around than his is. Plus he has that nasty glossy screen and even worse, he's running Vista on it.

I took mine to school today, and it wasn't too bad to get up there. Luckily I have never had a schedule or class that required a ton of books, so carrying this thing really isn't an issue. Besides, what's 1.4 lbs difference gunna do? I need the muscles. ;)

I've got a 24" Dell flat panel. It's huge. Can't imagine what a 24" iMac would be like.

Sorry but this is one of the most ridiculous requests I have ever seen in these forums. You want us to tell YOU if YOU mad the right choice for YOU. Come again? It is your choice, you know your needs. How on earth do you expect me or anyone else here to know if you are happy about your choice?

I was mostly wanting to hear what others thought about the 17" computer. No need to be an ass about it. You don't like the topic, don't reply to it. Better yet, don't read it!

Alright chaps, lets play nice. We're all adults here, well atleast most of us are :p.

Carrying around a 17" MBP isn't easy and building muscles on one side of the body isn't appealing either. However, since you mentioned that you are in the design community, the higher rez should be useful for you, but if you are continuously switching classes, then lugging it around is going to be a real pain. On that note, the 15" MBP would have been a better choice.

Well, it's been a week and I'm LOVING this 17" screen. I did some video editing on it and don't think it'd be nearly as enjoyable on a smaller screen. The 1920x1200 display performed WONDERFULLY!

As for building muscles on one side of my body, that's not happening. I bought a Tucano neoprene sleeve yesterday at the university bookstore after class and it works great in my backpack. The guy at the bookstore can't see a point in going smaller than a 17". He likes the larger size of the screen over the smaller case size, and agreed that the 15" isn't that much more portable. We are talking less than an inch and a half wider, not even an inch deeper. I am loving this thing!

If you want to go mobile then I think even 15'' is too big!

So just buy an extra Blackbook if you go anywhere!

That could work too! Problem is, I need lot's of power for graphic design school. That's why I opted for the 17" model. I'm satisfied!

It's too big! It's like MC Hammer's pants. :D

You bought the right MBP but maybe the wrong mac. The Pros in your situation work on the Quad Mac Pro with the 30" display at the office and then take the 17" MBP on the road. Yeah, the rig costs $5k but it pays for itself in a few weeks of billings.

But you're a student, so you know, you probably made the right choice, but yeah you may need more RAM and an external display for home for those big projects.

Yeah, I can't afford to buy a MBP and a Mac Pro right now. I'd give my left big toe for a Mac Pro! I just figured I should buy what I can afford right now that can do it all. Maybe not the fastest machine, but it's pretty dang fast!

For day to day, it'll be great. It's just your big projects that might tax it - that's why you might want to max the RAM. Then it'll be faster than vegas money.
