View Full Version : Unboxing Your iPhone

There is an article on TUAW that talks about unboxing your iPod, and makes a very good point.
When you finally make it to the counter and they bring out your magnificent black or white box.....the At&t or Apple employee is going to, right in front of you, unbox it, unwrap it, and set it up for activation.
Is anybody going to do something about this???? Any Apple diehard takes pride in opening their new products themselves, and this may put a hamper on that....

Some people are saying you'll do the activation yourself at home through iTunes. So maybe you'll get your pretty box, they'll scan a barcode on a sticker on the side and you get to do the unboxing yourself.

I totally agree.
It is the excitement of opening the unique packaging of an Apple deive.
Plus I would not want some under paid frustrated employee handling my $600 device. I understand those folks that would rather open and activate themselves. I would'nt let them bang my wife either. They can bang my ex if they like :D

kgiglio2 does have a point in that unboxing an Apple product is a very exciting time. I'll be honest here- Apple packages their products like a work of art. Hopefully you can do it yourself (many times you can with cell phones). If not, I'll get over it.

When I bought my cellphone's sim card, the girl in the store was rushing to finish with me so she could go to have lunch with somebody. She handled the cellphone badly.
I wouldn't like that kind of treatment to an Apple product.
I hate cellphone companies so much!

This will be interesting. AT&T employees interacting with Mac freaks. I bet this will be the first time those employees see their customers' eyes begin to glaze over once they set the iPhone box down on the table in front of them.
Mac guy - "Don't worry about opening the box. I want to do it at home."
AT&T guy - "Oh, It's no big deal we can set it all up for you right now." (breaks the small circle piece of tape and throws open the square box)
Mac guy - (begins to sweat) "No, really, I want to open it myself."
AT&T guy - "Oh, its no bother, it will only take a second." (flips open the top flaps of the packaging, ripping it slightly, takes the iPhone out, jerks open the top of the neatly folded plastic packaging of the iPhone, holds the plastic packaging downward, lets the iPhone slide out, falling down through the air and caughting it in his hand. Crumples the plastic cover in his other hand and throws it in the trash can sitting next to his computer, then.....)
Mac guy - OMGGG DUDE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?!?!? (Grabs the iPhone and box off the table, falls over the chair, busts out the front doors of the AT&T store, knocks over all the people standing in line and runs off into the distance screaming.)

AT&T guy from my local store said the buyer will "set it up" at home with iTunes.

Serious issues? It's called being passionate about a product you've been waiting to get for a long time. If I was getting myself an iPhone, I'd want to unbox it for the first time.
To the OP, I understand where you're coming from. :)

Would it put a damper on the mood if the AT&T guy banged your wife over a hamper?

I'm not so sure the employees will open the box for you. Apple is well aware of people's enjoyment of unboxing of Apple products. You can probably find unboxing photos of almost every new apple product over the past few years all over the web. Apple gets that part of getting a new product involves the entire experience, which helps make Apple who they are. So don't lose hope folks! I may just carry some latex gloves for the apple store employee in case they do need to open the box. :D

This one doesn't look too 'artfully' packaged ... I guess we can all rest a little easier...

they shouldn't have to, only to check that it works...
The sim card will be seperate, so all they have to do is scan the sim card, hand it to you, and give you the iphone in the box, when you are ready, unpack, and put the sim card in yourself.

I personally, want to be the first one to touch the thing, not some ATT guy whos been working with stuff all day. I always love the first "start up" of new products. so I'm hoping they can just activate the SIM card without inserting in the phone, and let me do that myself!
I'm not scared to make a scene if I have to!

ROFL!!!!! So true.....
I am not bad (I hope...), but there is a certain pleasure in opening an Apple product yourself the first time. Apple is the master in giving the consumer a first rate experience from the very beginning.
I wonder how non-Mac/Apple iPhone buyers will react to not having a 1/2 inch thick manual when they open their iPhone box.....

ATT Guy: That will be $690 with a monthly fee of $100. Now let me set it up for you. (Trys to open box)
Mac Guy: DON'T DO THAT! STOP MAN! THATS MINE!
ATT Guy: We have to activate the phone for you sir.
Mac Guy: ILL DO IT MYSEF, GIVE IT TO ME!
ATT Guy: Sir let me speak to my boss.
(Guy leaves, comes back)
Here, we got it all set up, we have to do it here.
(Hands over iphone with no box, some ripped bent papers, and smudges all over the screen)
Mac Guy: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! What DId you DO?!?!
ATT Guy: Have a nice day. NEXT! (Next mac guy runs off with his iphone in fear.)

I'm calling foul on this one. What the chances that A) the time on the outside of the box is the same time as the phone when it comes out of the box. And B) the time stays are 9:41 the throughout every one of those photos.
Either this guy has the fastest shutter finger in the world, or something is up.

Please people, don't get excited about this. It is completely fake.
You can clearly see in pictures 4, 5, 6, and 7 that there are pieces of paper taped to each side of a box with the picture of the iphone on it. When it is sitting on the sidekick it is twice as thick as it should be and is boxy, and come on, it is completely flat looking in the pictures of it being in his pocket.
I'm not sure why I just spent time writing this.

Yeah, not to mention that the screen is on when he opens the box and its still wrapped in plastic... and the screen doesn't change once throughout every picture. oh, and its made of cardboard.

Funny how he didn't even try to push it too far and you see right away that it's a fake.
But you do know that in a few days someone will do the exact same thing with a real iPhone. :D
