As I just accessed the iPhone Website, they have just totally redone it (as I literally refreshed because the page wasn't loading fully).

See now at http://www.apple.com/iphone/ :)

It includes a guided tour for the iPhone (http://www.apple.com/iphone/usingiphone/guidedtour_large.html).

I didn't see arn online so I don't know how to notify him about this.

This is, what... The third major redesign since January? (And they just redid it last week! Although this is a significantly larger change.) I liked the previous one, better.

A hand model, right???

Imagine telling that to someone you meet.

I met a guy who was a professional guitar player, wouldn't shake your hand.

I'll be this guy says, "Sorry, can't shake, I'm a hand model... for Apple."

That would make it cooler, I guess. Apple... now even a male hand model is cool!!!

I saw a lady who had to be the hand model for Heather Lockleer? in a hair commercial. Heather had to lay on the ground sideways and hold up her head. Apparently, the hand model has to spoon Heather to be the arm and hand holding up her head.

What a weird world:D :D :D

Near the beginning of the video he specifically says, "from here you can begin using any one of the sixteen amazing applications"!!! He was also specifically not referring to the section buttons on the bottom (Phone, Mail, Safari, iPod) since he referred to both areas seperately.

I am reminded of the "perfect storm" of consumer marketing that Computerworld believed Microsoft was delivering for the Zune last year--thus, supposedly, making Apple very afraid :p

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=printArticleBasic&articleId=9003718

Now, what Apple & AT&T have gradually played up for a half a year--THAT is a perfect storm.

PS, I don't like that hand model. I prefer the tree-frog hands they use in their patents.

PPS, I really hope it can read PDFs, HTML pages, and other documents stored on the thing's internal HD. THAT would be great--I'd store tons of useful info for business and pleasure.

Also has anyone else noticed that the square in the home button is the same shape and size of the built in isight cameras on the imac, macbook, and macbooks pros? Could there possibly be an ichat camera hidden in plain sight all this time? :)

But 2mp is plenty for snapshots which is what phones are good for anyway. You can put 10 megapixels in a phone and it'll still only be good for snapshots.

In demonstrating how to change ringtones, the video only demonstrates how to move between the phone's built-in ringtones.

Unless I missed it, there's nothing to indicate the ability to set a song as a ringtone.

Has there been anything publicized about the iPhone to suggest that you can use your iPod music as a ringtone?

For me, it's not a huge deal, but a lot of people like to set music as their ringtone. It would be a shame if you bought a song from iTunes, then had to pay for it again as a ringtone.

Nope, cuz 2 megapixels is nothing to write home about.

When we're talking about tiny lenses, megapixels has very little to do with image quality. In fact, you really don't want more than 2.

The more pixels you pack into a tiny CCD, each pixel sensor gets smaller and less light gets to each pixel. To make up for that and make the image brighter, the camera has to bump up the ISO speed, making the image grainier. You really don't want more than 2 megapixels in a camera of that size.

Also, you wouldn't see the drawbacks of a 2 megapixel (that's a 1600x1200 image) on either the 320x480 iPhone, or this video, or even most computers.

Yes, the quality of the iPhone camera has yet to be seen, but 2 megapixels tells us nothing.

In the first half of the movie, the demonstrator mentions that you can use any of the other functions of the phone DURING a phone call.

I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to look something up for someone only to be lock out of that feature during a call. Browsing the web, or photo albums during a call is really cool.

A multitasking cell phone, cool.

Are we still speculating on even more features? Well, I'm with the camera/button people on the bottom of the phone to be used for video conferencing. That's just too cool a feature for Steve Jobs to have passed up.

Yeah, 2 good megapixels (which I'm not really expecting) would be a lot to write home about.

I think it will probably be better than par for cell phones, but not close to what you'd get out of a dedicated digicam.

No, not usual in all places.

Yes, 'mobile phone' fits the category of device, but most people I interact with simply call it a cell or cell phone (i.e: a mobile phone that works on 'cell networks' (vs. the prior technology mobile radio networks that existed before "cell" technology) that pass you from one "cell" to another as you move from location to location.

Some folks do call it a mobile, as in, "Call me on my mobile." But most will tell you to call them on their cell.

(Just some nonsense to think about as we ALL wait to touch a real iPhone!):p

They should hook this into Garageband. Make your own ringtones, or edit songs to make ringtones.

I'm sure they will sell ringtones in iTunes for the iPhone. I've heard ringtones can go for lots of money. If iTunes charges $.99 for them, it could disrupt the whole ringtone industry.

Well, technically, the iPhone won't help you out if you're lost in the middle of nowhere with no cell signal. That's a scenario where a dedicated GPS will get you out of there.

But still, the video was very very cool. I did notice that there was no apparent way to set your own ringtones besides the preinstalled ones. Or maybe it's just buried under another option...

Traffic on Google Maps is nothing new. Google's Java based Gmaps app already has it but it definitely isn't as easy to use :P

Ringtone for $.99? The same price as a regular song? That seems kind of pricey to me...

i'm assume the most frustrating thing with the iPhone is going to be double tapping to enlarge a webpage... you also have to double tap a link, and i'm quite certain that when a user simply means to enlarge the page (like google search), it's going to accidentally goto a link instead, or vice-versa...

and that guy giving the guided tour is creepy... like pedophile-creepy... that's all...

Lol when you're watching the video during the Settings section, as he moves through the Settings the Usage goes from...

7h 6m... 7h 18m... 7h 38m...

Yet the phones time still remains at 9:42am during the whole presentation, and only 2 minutes passed by in real time during this part of the presentation!

It's a well-done tour video.

My observations:He said "Favorites is a great way to speed dial someone with just one tap." Then he showed how you do it, with three taps! (You tap Favorites, then +, then Johnny Appleseed.)

Color blind people may have trouble with the red used to differentiate phone messages, and the red used to show traffic problems. No sign of color preferences in the Settings, but we didn't see all of the Settings.

Sometimes "zoom out" is 1 click; sometimes 2.

The spokesman said "we" so he's (pretending to be?) an Apple employee, not a third-party like a model or an ad agency worker.

The video ends by mentioning the date iPhones go on sale, so in its current form the "Tour" is only good for the next week.

That "End Call" button is right where my cheek would be....they didn't say if the touch screen is disabled when talking. Anyone know if this is how it will work?

Not disabled while talking--you can go on speakerphone and surf the web if you want--but it IS disabled while being held to your face (and the screen light also shuts off to save battery). This uses a proximity sensor and has been touted by Apple all year.

I am very impressed with the Maps app. You really don't need a GPS with all it can do imo.

Need, no. Want, yes! Complete with Google Earth's 3D terrain please :)

Color blind people may have trouble with the red used to differentiate phone messages, and the red used to show traffic problems. No sign of color preferences in the Settings, but we didn't see all of the Settings.

red can be a problem (im not C/Blind but having huge dealio about application usability for web apps @ work) but Orange/Green go almost exactly the same colour (yes the word has a U in it, get used to it! :p ) under one type of c/blindness.

under another, red green and orange ALL go a shade of pink. Yellow is one of the only colours that is largely unaffected. but yellow is crap for normal-sighted people except in small amounts.

I think my wife is finally on the bandwagon. After watching the guided tour with me she said "when you look at this vs buying a GPS, cell phone, iPod, and PDA, the iPhone is really a deal.":D

Just make sure she knows it won't actually perform the functions of a GPS, although the maps are great if you know where you are, which is almost always. I haven't seen the video yet, so wait, does the tour mention some sort of Google Maps App ability that I don't know about?

The demonstrator stopped short of scrolling through all the settings, possibly to hide some undisclosed features?

Also has anyone else noticed that the square in the home button is the same shape and size of the built in isight cameras on the imac, macbook, and macbooks pros? Could there possibly be an ichat camera hidden in plain sight all this time? :)

It's possible; In the video, they didn't demo the camera feature. But, on the other hand, why would one thing have two purposes (a camera and button)

The reason cameras are placed on the backs of non-flip phones was so one person, "the operator" , can take a picture of someone else/people while they ("the operator") can see the screen.

If the camera was in the front, the back would be pretty boring (well, not really, there is an Apple logo there) and then the "the operator" would have a tough time trying to take a picture of the other person(s). But if the camera were on the front, it would be easier for the operator to take a picture of themself.

I predict that the camera will stay the same. But who knows? (besides Steve and his "inner circle" :P )

Hopefully they can distinguish it from black, though--as long as it looks gray or brown or something other than black it should do the job. But additional accessibility options would be great.

There was plenty of new stuff to see. You can view Word and Excel documents, the content of the elusive settings button was finally shown, we heard more ringtones, airplane mode, etc. We finally see how to turn the iphone off completely, a new gesture for deleting unwanted content with the quick finger swipe to the right and also a zoom out with the double-finger tap in google maps. Driving directions and traffic. A nice teaser.

All we're missing now is a full version of ichat, syncing with google address book and calendars, some more widgets like white/yellow pages, flight tracker, that nifty package tracker, dictionary/theasuraus (see i spelt it wrong), and a unit converter, oohh and translator and wikipedia. Some version of iWork compatible with office and of course compatibility with blackberry servers for those who need it.

Am I missing anything? besides 3G and GPS of course

It's a well-done tour video.

My observations:He said "Favorites is a great way to speed dial someone with just one tap." Then he showed how you do it, with three taps! (You tap Favorites, then +, then Johnny Appleseed.)

Three taps to add Johnny Appleseed as a favorite...but to call you only need two taps (tap favorites then the name).

I think what he was suggesting is that there are 2 cameras. The standard in the back, and one in the home button for video conferencing. That little white square looks just like an iSight, and coincidently, during the MWSF keynote, I even commented on that to a friend. But who knows!

I think you're missing the point. What rdrr was talking about was the possibility of an iChat camera, in ADDITION to the camera in back. So, the camera in back would be for taking still pictures, just like in any other cell phone camera, but the camera in front would be used as an iSight camera for video conferencing ala iChat. This of course would be used to show video of yourself, just like in iChat. It wasn't one REPLACING the other, it's just in addition to the other. One for a still camera, one for a video camera. I personally don't think this is going to happen (especially with using EDGE as opposed to a 3G system - but should work fine in WiFi mode), but hey, we can all wish can't we. I sure as heck would be loving it if it did happen. Maybe in version 2.0. Maybe . . . .

Apple clearly made a point in the video to address the dreaded keyboard issue that has been the biggest complaint so far.

1. They showed initially typing with one index finger. Pretty fast.
2. They show typing with two thumbs. Faster still.
3. Then they note that after some time typing will be fast (if you learn to trust the correcting keyboard).

And who said being all thumbs was a bad thing. Typing with two thumbs looked pretty fast to me. And just wait until the kids get their hands on this phone, they will be able to fly like you cannot imagine.

Okay, let's finally put the keyboard rumors to sleep. The horizontal keyboard will certainly be in the first software update in a few weeks. The only reason they didn't put it in initially was that they didn't think they needed it.

The real beauty of the iPhone is that elegant little enhancements like adding a horizontal keyboard are just an update away. And free to boot. Try updating your Blackberry after the purchase. Not going to happen.

All I can say is WOW!

Yeah, from a marketing standpoint, Apple is doing a great job with the iPhone. They're managing the hype by consistantly revealing more and more about the product as launch date approaches instead of just spewing everything two months ago. The online guide is great - it's another tool for teaching people about the iPhone and building hype.

I still believe one of the biggest reasons the Zune essientially failed is because MS went after the wrong iPod. They should have targeted the iPod mini/nano market and not the 5th Gen. They could have uncut the nano on price, offered cool colors (brown, wtf?), focused on making a thin product and dropped the wifi sharing. The Zune is a classic case of what happens when engineers design a product (no offense to any engineers :-) )

Ringtone for $.99? The same price as a regular song? That seems kind of pricey to me...

It is pricey from the iTunes perspective, but it is cheap from the wireless phone perspective. The industry has been selling song fragments for $2.50-$3.00 for many years.

I read yesterday that one of the major carriers (not AT&T) just dropped their ringtone prices from $2.50 to $0.99; the article cited pressures from the iPhone.

Has there been anything publicized about the iPhone to suggest that you can use your iPod music as a ringtone?

That has been a big issue/concern/question for a while. Of course, you may want only part of the song, especially if the songs start quiet and slow and then builds.

If Apple makes it trivial to connect Garage Band to your iTunes-ringtone section to your iPhone, then I can see an explosion of personal ring tones. Some people do this already, but it takes too many steps.

Generally I agree (especially from a marketing point of view), but be careful of the megapixel myth. Great news about being able to view Word docs but does anyone know if it's possible to save them somewhere and access them through the Notes app, maybe?

That's my hope too. Like the way Notes on an iPod can view text, hypertext, images, audio clips, and video.

I want to be able to browse the iPhone's storage and view any supported document or image. GREAT for referring to past business proposals, reference info, etc..

They should hook this into Garageband. Make your own ringtones, or edit songs to make ringtones.

I'm sure they will sell ringtones in iTunes for the iPhone. I've heard ringtones can go for lots of money. If iTunes charges $.99 for them, it could disrupt the whole ringtone industry.

yeah no reason to charge more for a ringtone than it costs to buy the actual song, eh?

[Edit] Perhaps ringtones are only cheaper on an iPhone plan. They stay at whatever they are at now for all other phone, thus not ruining AT&Ts ringtone revenue and promoting iPhone sales

the battery will NOT be replaceable. jesus ***** christ.

Correction: the battery will DEFINITELY be replaceable. Possibly officially replaceable, but by 3rd parties if not. It will just not be EASY for a user to do themselves, and the preferred method will be to take it to an Apple Store.

Carrying spares will not be an option. However, external booster batteries will be (probably some built into cases, too). They'll add bulk to carry, but so does carrying spare batteries.

Apple clearly made a point in the video to address the dreaded keyboard issue that has been the biggest complaint so far.

I picked up on that too. The message: Don't judge the virtual keyboard from your initial experience -- give it a week.

Side note: Apple did file a patent for a slide out keyboard a few months ago (or at least, that was when the patent surfaced). Just as the iPod has multiplied into many models for many niches, I could see some variants of the iPhone with a slideout keyboard.

No one mentioned Internet speed in the iPhone Guided Tour. It is quite fast. However, if you pay attention, it looks like was using the WiFi, the little green radiation icon next to "AT&T" icon at the top. You can tell it is WiFi indicator from the "setting" section. Just wondering what speed would be using EDGE.

What if the secret features include the following:

Voice Recognition or Italk capabilities
Real Ichat and video conferencing
Anti-theft

So far the features look nice, but nothing that really makes a non-Apple fan wanna buy it.

I know TONS of people that aren't impressed, or think its too expensive.

Implementing a voice recognition a la Italk. Imagine never having to pick up the phone, say while your driving....but not only dial a number, but actually FULLY control it in every aspect. From creating and sending emails to dictating a document.

Imagine having a video conference, but a TRUE video conference, with Ichat like features!!!!!!!

And as rumored before, anti theft. The technology is already there.

Especially if you are travelling somewhere and hear about an accident on the radio. Your passenger just calls up Google Maps, gets a new route that avoids the traffic, and off you go.

I wonder when there will be the first accident because someone was using Google Maps on their iPhone while driving?

how is "find song, cut section i want (optional step), send file via bluetooth" too many steps?

It's more like:

1. Locate song

2. Import into Garageband

3. Cut down to appropriate clip and length

4. Export to AIFF audio file into iTunes

5. Open iTunes, find song

6. Convert AIFF file into MP3 file

7. Send song to phone over bluetooth

It is not too bad, but there is a lot of room for improvement there.

This would be great (since Google Maps can already show traffic congestion info), but Google maps needs to add an "Avoid Traffic" feature to their directions for this to work as smoothly as we want.

One thing to note....

In the beginning, when he first demos NYT on Safari, we see aqua-style (not the matte gray style like we have seen on the iPhone previously) drop-down menus on the site, as well as the Flash content (NYT's media player).
http://www.eggdropper.com/picdrop/iphonedrop1.jpg
http://www.eggdropper.com/picdrop/iphoneflash1.jpg

This might suggest that he is scrolling through a screenshot taken on a computer.

When he returns to NYT later, we see the matte gray drop-down menus......and the Flash content.....odd.

Apple has previously said no Flash, but this is puzzling.

On the other hand, when they show Yahoo!, there's a blank spot where there is normally a Flash ad.

i think the main reasons a majority of people don't do this are:

1. most people are complete idiots when it comes to computers/electronics/their phone, and therefore have no idea it's possible and even if they didn't would have no idea how to do it.
2. most peoples free phones still do not have bluetooth and they certainly don't have data cables for them.

Two things:

Loading Ringtones. So far there has not been one visual of the new iTunes interface. I cannot imagine nothing short of an overhaul with oodles of new features. So it would be reasonable to assume that the loading of ringtones will happen here.

The use of the term "Mobile Phone". When I worked for AT&T, we were told not to use the term "Cell Phone". We didn't want to confuse the customer with the phone company "Cellular One".

What is the current maximum storage capacity of every other smart phone on the market? 4GB at most, if you buy a big enough flash memory card.

The iPhone does not have a "hard drive". It has 4GB or 8GB of built-in flash memory, like an iPod nano. If you're holding out for a phone with 40-80GB of flash memory storage, you'll be sitting on the sidelines for quite some time.

And email won't be stored in the iPhone's flash memory at all: it resides on your mail server.

So no, the iPhone won't fully replace my full-sized iPod. But it will have enough capacity to hold a new songs and / or videos to keep me amused when I don't bother carrying my iPod with me.

OK, I thought there was something like that. However the video assumes people know this and are addicted to all things Apple. The average Joe would probably wonder about that too. As a Treo user I have to either turn off the touchscreen during calls or leave it on. Since many of their potential consumers are Treo users I'm sure many will wonder the same thing. No, not even close. The 4 or 8 gb drive option that we've heard so much about is purely a flash drive for music, video, and photos. Exactly the same as it is on an iPod.

That drive will not get filled up with bookmarks, email, attachments, etc.. its not built that way.

These are the notes I made when watching the video...

ringtones - preset only, can't use songs. How to add new?
That's been discussed here already. If I've bought a song I don't want to pay again to make it a ringtone. I can make any MP3 or MIDI file a ringtone on my Treo 650 (2-1/2 yrs old) so I hope they add this soon. Charging for ringtones is so damned lame.

email - 15m 30m 1hr - no 5 minutes!
I have my Treo and mail.app set to check email every five minutes. I do hope they add a 5-minute option. Yes it eats the battery faster, but I need info faster. This one really bothers me.

no voice dialing
I hope they add this soon. This is a major missing feature (missing near as I can tell).

locking if lost?
I didn't see a way to lock the phone, requiring a password when turned on. I don't use this myself but many consider it critical.

wallpaper, not desktop picture

Doesn't look like it has Cingular's trademark default ringtone. I can't imagine why anyone would want one without this critical feature. ;)

wallpaper, not desktop picture
This struck me - they called it "wallpaper" - the Windows term - and not "Desktop Picture" - the Mac term.

well, its not really a Desktop is it?

As for Ringtones, there is a ringtones tab in iTunes when you dock the iPhone. Time will tell whether this is syncing purchased ones from the store, or the ability to add your tracks.

the battery will NOT be replaceable. jesus ***** christ.

Can someone tell me why would anyone want to replace the battery on their phone?? I've had the same phone for 5 years and I've never had to replace it. This isn't my first cell phone either... I've never found the need to replace the battery...

I've had my RAZR for eighteen months and my talk time is now about 15 minutes.

You do actually USE your cellphone, right?

its not called a desktop picture because its not a desktop. simple.

It was the terminology that surprised me. Besides, they could call it the desktop if they wanted to.

Some things I'd like:-

1. Customisable keyboard, so you can put certain punctuation marks (fullstop, comma, apostrophe etc.) on their own permanent keys, without having to go into the "symbols" section separately (a la Windows Mobile, god forbid).

2. Templates for commonly used symbols/phrases ie. smileys, preset reponses etc. (again like WM can).

3. Instead of just silent or ring, several profiles with different settings for each (vibrate on/off for different events, and different sounds/volumes for different events) - ie. Home, Outside, Quiet, Silent, etc. My first Nokia phone over 10 years ago could do profiles, with Windows Mobile now allowing for the detailed customisation. Flicking the silent/ring switch could bring up a list of options on-screen.

Surely this isn't too much to ask in a future update? ;)

That seems to be a defect.

I am hoping the space between the top twelve and bottom four applications, is a place to put "terminal.app", god please let there be a terminal. :)

You might WANT a Terminal on iPhone for your own bizarre reasons, but HOPING for it is like hoping that iPhone comes with a free Mac Pro.

All the time... and I use the web too... browsing, texting, IM, emails. And I always have it on the loudest setting + vibrate. The battery certainly isn't what it was 5 years ago, but it still lasts a couple of days without charging and about 2 hours of talk time + web/email/text stuff. It's crappy-beat-up Sanyo Sprint camera phone, but it still works! :o

hey it has readers for Word and Excel. are they new features!?

and (may have been known befor) weather and stocks are both provided by yahoo...
i cant ever imagine wanting Stocks as a major app on my phone tho.. :S

I think we are seeing WHY they shifted resources from Leopard to iPhone....

Look at the UI on the iPhone - it's CoreAnimation.

Look at the "readers" - it's QuickView

The iPhone runs on ARM processors, so that's updates to XCode (probably not released externally, but leveraging the tool.)

In other words, while the focus was on iPhone, it was still progressing Leopard. Core Animation and Quick View are probably baked now because they had to be ready for the iPhone.

All in all, the more I look at what it can do, the more I want one.

But they may have sparked MORE GPS comments with the driving directions demo. You know, "If it can do all that why not put a GPS chip in there and guide me..."

And lo, the rumors of a navigation system from apple can be fuelled some more.

While you may not like what Apple does sometimes, I myself can always find a method to their madness. Their actions are well thought out, it's just not always publically obvious as to why.

be well

It has probably been one of the most well executed marketing campaigns for a tech product I have ever seen.

Astounding UI

Agreed. The level of detail in the UI is immaculate, perfect even.

If only Apple could put so much love and care into all their products all the time- but then again, there's only one Steve Jobs, and he's a very busy guy right now. It's quite clear this is where his attention has been these last few years...

Still, that video was a complete reminder of why the world (or at least, the US) is so hyped about this phone right now.

I completely agree with this one. I wonder if it is a feature they just didn't go over....seems like every phone I've ever owned was able to have different profiles.
