Hi,
I'm giving my old iBook to my girlfriend and need to reinstall Mac OS X on it.
System: iBook G3, 256 RAM.
So which OS X would you recomment?
10.2, 10.3, or 10.4?
Thanks a lot

It's not one of those horrid 800 x 600 iBooks is it?
You should be more specific - as there were dozens of iBooks made from 1999 - 2006. Most would be best suited with 10.4 Tiger. Those 800 x 600 ones are better of with Mac OS 9.2.2.

OS9. 256 on a G3 iBook is marginal for OSX. Plus it didn't likely ship with OSX (or if it did, 10.1 at latest) so you would have the expense of the retail copy of OSX to install on it.

...You hard drive space is extremely important, particular for a RAM constricted computer like yours. What is the capacity of your hard drive?

Panther. Runs fine on this machine when you have come to terms with what speed machine you actually have. Anything earlier will be slower, and Tiger chews up more RAM.
Going with OS 9 these days is like saying you don't actually want to run anything that's come out in years.

This is the iBook I have: http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/ibg3dvdr8.jpg
It came with Jaguar if I remember correctly.
I'm sorry but I don't know how much hard drive space it has. Where do I find that? Thanks

Almost every iBook G3 and all iBook G4s look exactly like that. What we really need to know is what model it is specifically. Find out it's processor speed by going to the Apple Menu -> About this Mac. That would help us out a lot, as then we can tell what kind it is and which OS would best suit it.

i say 10.3, I heard that 10.3 runs smoother than 10.2 on small RAM machine, and 10.4 will be too slow for you.
