Hi there, I'm new to laptops. Is it alright to leave the magsafe adapter plugged in all the time? i never have any real need to run this thing on battery.

No problem at all.:)
Nonetheless, it is recommended to calibrate (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284) it once a month.

it's fine, it's smart about taking care of the battery. But if you dont need the battery for a long time, say a month or more, you should power it down to 50% and pop it out.
one little thing you might be concerned with though, My processor speeds cut in half when I don't have a battery in.
also go ahead and cycle the battery atleast once a month. as in full drain and full charge as back to back.

Rokem, when you take your battery out, your performance is cut in half? Which MBP do you have?
My performance drops when I'm running ON the battery, but when the power adapter is in, its fast. Strange.

For both Rokem and Milky23
OSX has a setting available through either the battery icon in the menu bar, or you can access a more detailed version through System Preferences/Energy Saver.
The settings have default presets that change the system behavior from Better Performance, when plugged in, to Better Energy Savings when running on battery. These defaults can be adjusted from within the System Preferences/Energy Saver so that they automatically set the system the way you want it whenever your power source changes state. If you just want to change it quickly without setting anything in preferences then simply click on the battery icon in the meny bar and then select whichever option you want from the drop down menu.

Yeah I didn't believe it either until I read the document from Apple. The CPUs use one core or something because the battery acts as a buffer between the electricity and the CPU.

Every new laptop user should read this (http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html) about their computer and its battery. :)
Here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305336) is info about running a MB/MBP without the battery installed.

When I get my MBP I planned on having it on the power adapter with no battery in most of the time, running through an APC battery backup.
This makes little sense to me that the processor throttles down that much with no battery in. I don't think I have heard of any other notebooks doing this.
Strange.
